Yeah, I've been trying out a DoW (only, no Regiments of Renown) army in a warband campain, and it works like a dream. Crossbows are a fine shooting unit, and then ogres eat anything on that scale in melee. Duelists are also suprisingly powerful (beat a unit of 10 greatswords with 8 duelists with pis...

Just give them javelins from the book. That's the simplest way to do it, and it's been pre-balanced by the guys at games workshop to be fairly good rules, so you might want to look at those.

Well, I'd compare myself to Hannible: I orginize incredible systems to get my army into battle, which end up with the majority broken (ok, so the shoebox with tissues and ziploc bags wasn't the greatest idea). When I get to the battlefield, I'm really not as agressive as I should be. Plus, my oppon...

I know this rule is more complicated than the original rule. The game rules are balanced between simplicity and realism, and the "chargers strike first" rule leans more towards simple. This varient heads towards the real side, and since the game wasn't built around it, the game as is isn't balanced...

Inititive change

Ok, so I know that this idea has been floating around for a very long time, but I haven't really seen it codified, so here goes: Charging does not automatically give the chargers the first strike. Instead, add +4 to the chargers inititive score for the round. Any time a model would gain the "always...

I could try and out shoot him, but if I dedicate enough points to shooting, his horse tear me appart. If I dedicate enough points to harpies and flying characters and such that they don't get shot, I have the same problem. Any option besides magic?

How do you batter down a fortress?

Ok, my problem is with my local empire player. We like to play small games (~1000 pts), but he always holes up in a corner with his war-machines and handgunners on a hill, units of spears in front of that, and inner-circle knights and pistoliers at the edges. I can usually make space by shooting up...

If you had a unit you were basing of the roman legionaries, I'd just give them WS+1, and tower shields (as shield, but +2 save and can't be combined with handweapons or be used mounted). Also, the Romans rarely used spears in hand-to-hand combat, but used the gladius (handweapon) instead.

Yeah, I've had inner-circle knights with a captian loose combat to 16 spears, with average rolling. Also, spears (as the term applies to warhammer) weren't designed to be used the way you're describing: that's pikes, and their rules are fairly good representations of that.

But the dragoons are costed so you aren't paying for the horses, just the extra movement when you aren't charging. If they were cavalry, they'd cost ~16 pts, not 10. You aren't paying for the horse, just the movement.

With the dragoons, the point was these were defensive troops that could move fast, much like dragoons from the napoleonic wars. It isn't that they abandon their horses: they just leave them behind. Is that a little clearer?

Ok, I know people aren't big fans of the dragoons, but what's the main problem w/them, suggestions to fix them? They're included in the list as a defensive unit that can still move with the rest of the army. For the Tracker, I'm actually thinking about cutting the RXB, or upping it to 15 pts: cross...

You claim I was wrong about my interpretation of the Fluff, yet you didn't explain how. As I see no problem with it myself, please explain. It defeats the purpose of executioners game-play wise, not fluff wise. As much as I would love to have a WS5 BS5 T4 Ld10 Unbreakable unit, each carrying a pois...

Yep, that's what I remember as the Northern Watchtower list. That list is for the armies that patrol the boarder itself, but the Northern Patrol actually goes into the waste itself. I'll change the name to avoid confusion. Comments on the list itself?

Sorry, I don't know a GW northern Patrol list. This was intended as counter-point to the northern watchtower. There aren't 2 cold one knights max- just 2 max count as core. Any others would count as special.

Northern Raiders Army list

Although Dark elves are mostly focused on the destruction of their treacherous cousins, they are no fools. To the north of Naggaroth is the Chaos Waste, one of the most dangerous areas of the world. Although the Druchii have built an extensive series of defenses to keep the hordes of chaos back, Da...

This still faces the basic problem with slaves: why would they be on the battlefield? Dark Elves wouldn't risk their profits unless absolutly nessecary, and even then I doubt they'd trust them with weapons. Also, why with the executioners? The executioners are elite warriors, who wouldn't like havi...

The Trebuchet is already used by Brettonians, so that might not be the greatest idea, and you probably ought to just have the rules match that of the brettonian's. I think the main problem with your idea is assuming that enemy soldiers make the best slaves. With races like Orcs, where everyone figh...

I assume you ment to say the blade of Sorin gave frenzy, or some other ability other than stubborn, seeing as he already has a rule giving stubborn. As it stands (without points cost), you can get these all in a 1,000 pt. Dogs of War Army, and in other armies at 2,000 pts. Seeing as they're all lor...

Also, don't put shades as an unrestriced core choice- as it is now, the only way to ...

If they had a ranged weapon, it shouldn't be a reapeater. Repeater crossbows are built for laying down clouds of fire, not for shooting a single target. Assasins would probably have shortbows or something more "precise."

Sorry Lethalis. I was saying people overestimate the value of inititive, not that the army needs fixing. I was just saying that inititive isn't our armies' greatest advantage. No, I don't want t4 elves.

In my experience, battles are mostly won on the charges- even if you don't break the other side, the extra kills later are fairly even. Usually the only way a protracted combat is broken up is from another charge. Even if we strike first, we loose huge numbers, because of our low toughness and armo...
