Design Ideas for Elves Online

So with the development of the new forum I hope to help Daeron out with skinning of the new site and establish a look for each of the 3 factions.

A while back I came up with some alternative banners for our beloved DNet site - which I'm quite fond of. I would like to do something similar with the other factions.

Predominantly the brand will be "Elves Online" but it would be nice to have a short statement below the logo and some visual to add some flavour to the site.

This is where some input from the community would be good. Can you offer some tag lines I could use, common themes that could be used etc....

Great initiative!
We should probably associate Ulthuan and Asrai, they might have inspiration for green, blue or pan-elven banners.
Also, the universes of AoS, KoW and WM/H could be used for some of the banners (as long as you see pointy ears).

The main split in AoS elves (once they get moved beyond their current legacy version) looks like it is going to be between the Shadowkin of Ulgu and the (as yet unnamed) followers of Tyrion and Teclis from Hysh. Ulgu elves already have a strong visual look exemplified by the Mistweaver Saih and Tenebrael Shard in WQ: Silver Tower. Magical mist, crescent moons, curved blades and a hint of Slaaneshi influence. Basically a fantasy version of 40K's Dark Eldar.

IMO, the elves of Hysh are likely to resemble Craftworld Eldar from 40K (and more specifically their warlocks and farseers), with lots of gemstones, a flowing, organic appearance to their armour and lots of aloof arrogance. Cold and clinical, as befits the realm of mathematical logic and certainty. Symmetry and fractal designs, perhaps.

Does that give any ideas for banners for those two factions?

Ok first step I think is to lock down the font for "ElvesOnline". Essentially this will be come the brand for the new forum, much the same as we have our DNet font in the banner above.

Below are some various fonts that I think would be suitable, let me know what you think.

Also if you have some others in mind let me know the name of the font and I will track it down.

Font number 1 is what we use for DNet.

7,10,11 are my preferred ons. 25 should be good too. I like a slightly more elegant than typewriter font, but it still needs somewhat bold letters. I like font 1 as well, of course, but it's a bit sinister and strongly associated with Dnet :)

My favourite by several nautical miles is still good old MA Bastarda (font #1), but I'm biased because I was the one who originally chose it for Druchii.net. It is clearly 'elvish' without feeling too 'Tolkien' (like #2) or 'generic fantasy' (like #3 and #5). I agree that it looks a little sinister, but is that a bad thing? Even 'good' elves are supposed to be aloof, otherworldly, fey, capricious, even cruel from a human point of view. And the capital 'E' makes a perfect logo on its own: a crescent moon with what looks like a curved blade (or a stylised depiction of a sailing ship) slashing through it. What could be more elvish than that?

Other fonts I can think of that you don't have there but might work: Before the Rain, Benegraphic, Brother Tattoo, Endor, Parolm.

I do like your point here - I also am quite attached to this font.

In my view we don't want anything to clean line, or looks like Old English. It also has to be reasonably bold, not a light weight font so some nice effects can be placed on it.

1 2 7 8 11 21 work for me.

When half a dozen of us will have expressed what they would select, could you set up a vote with any of the fonts selected (on the 3 forums, of course)?

I like the openness to give feedback and ideas but I wouldn't put it to the vote. I would like to leave it CoK's discretion and liberty as the main artist for the new theme. He has to make it work and make it all click together, after all...
Besides, I have faith he'll do a fine job :)

Well, it depends.
If he hesitates between several alternatives, then it is a good opportunity to open a vote and give more people a sense of ownership in the process.
If he (or a reduced team) has strong preference for one, then vote is not useful indeed.

I posted this to get a feel from the community - we all have to live with it when it goes up. I would like to leave some wow effect when you finally get to see it.

I'm not sure a vote will be needed - lets see how we go.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Daeron. :D

I like 2, 4, 6.

I prefer the easy differentiation between Elves and Online.

i.e.

Elves Online

rather than

elvesonline

P.S. Your sample version looks the best so far :)

4 and 8 are nice and bold. A lot of the others are a bit too skinny.

Thanks for the input all - I will work on this further.

Some further input needed - can anyone provide some short statements for the other factions that you think might work well under the logo?

Much the same as the ones I have used for DNet e.g.....
- Release the beast
- Pleasure of Pain
- Plunder the High Seas
- Embrace the Dark Magic
- The Land of Chill
- Glory to the Witch King
- Blood for the Blood God

Well, a few AoS-aelves-related ones to start with (with the factions they relate to):

Born of Shadow (Shadowkin/Ulgu)
Our Light shall burn away the Darkness of Chaos (Hysh)
Not all those who Wander are Lost (Wanderers)
Slaanesh's Bane (Aelves in general)
Khaine lives still within the blades of his Daughters (Daughters of Khaine)
Death holds no fear for the Reborn (Phoenix Temples)
Could I interest you in a hydra, good sir? Or a fantastic deal on a slightly-used kharibdyss? (Scourge Corsairs)
If it bleeds, we can kill it. But it would fetch a fine price alive. (Scourge Corsairs)
Death from Above (Swifthawk Agents)
A single blade in the night is worth a thousand swords at dawn (Shadowblades)
Never trust a witch (Darkling Covens)
Your doom was sealed the moment you took arms against us. We have forseen it. (Eldritch Council)

I like no.2 as it has a particularly classic elf look about it

One other question though - is the new forum going to be specifically for Warhammer / AoS elves (ie. GW-focussed) or will it encompass other elf stuff too such as Tolkein, D&D, 9th Age or general fantasy settings? (Just curious)

@ Darkprincess - my impression is that it will be all games that use Elves in a fantasy game.

All fantasy Elves, certainly not limited to GW.
Now, we expect the interested hobbyists to have a focus on those represented with models, and those used for any game (including roleplay).
If there is an interest in discussing Tolkien Elves or medieval representation of Elves, that will be welcome, but I doubt that there would be enough of it initially for a dedicated sub-forum.
