New Dark elf Armybook

Army wide rules:

(ANCIENT FOE) Vs High elves all DE units gain hatered and may re-roll all Break tests.

(NAGGARITHAN BLADES) Druchii blacksmiths produce the worlds finnest weapons. Made from exotic meterials , they can easily slice through any armor. ALL NON-MAGICALL CC DARK ELF WEAPONS (HAND WEAPONS , SPEARS , GREAT WEAPONS & LANCES ) GAIN THE ARMOUR PIERCING ABILITY.

(REPEATER CROSSBOW MK.2.0) Further research of the RXB has produced a more deadly version. DE warriors now ride to battle with a new repeater crossbow & advanced arrows that can be fitted with exchangable arrowheads.
The RXB has lost the single firering mode.It can now only shoot 2 shots at –1 to hit.
AT THE BEGGINING OF EVERY SHOOTING PHASE ANY UNIT EQUIPED WITH RXB’S CAN SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING ARROWHEADS.
SNAKEBITE : POISONED SHOTS
BROADHEAD : ARMOUR PIERCING
WARPSTONE : MAGICAL
IN A STAND AND SHOOT SITUATION THERE IS NOT ENOUGH TIME TO SWITCH AMMO , SO THE LAST SHOT FIRED REMAINS.

(FAST ENOUGH) Although not as fast as their Asurian counterparts , Druchii warriors have developed lightning fast reflexes in cc.
WHENEVER A DE UNIT WOULD STRIKE LAST (GETTING CHARGED , AGAINST A.S.F. WEAPONS/ABILITIES OR INITIATIVE) IT STRIKES ITS FULL ATTACKS AT THE SAME TIME AS THE OPPONENT.REMOVE CASUATIES AS NORMAL AFTER THE CC PHASE.

(ASSASSINS) ANY DE INFANTRY UNIT CAN HAVE A HIDDEN ASSASSIN FOR 50 Pts.
ALWAYS STRIKES FIRST THE TIME HE IS REVEALED.

WS9 , STR4 , T3 , 2W, IN9 , 5 POISONED/A.P. ATTACKS
(remember 2 goblin fanatics cost 50 Pts and cause 2d6 STR5 armour piercing attacks)
The assassin can never leave the parent unit.

WS6 , BS4 , STR4 , T3 , W2 , AT4, IN8, LD9
75 Pts equipment/poisons.Can NOT take any other armour.
poisoned attacks , Frenzy , 5+ Ward save , Light armour.
Can only be deployed in Witch elves units and no other character may join.
OPTIONS for extra hand weapon and Manticore.

OK. This is how I would make the new DE armybook.
I have read an interview of the guy that made the current army book and I remember him saying that the goal was to make an elite , fast , lightly armoured , raiding army.
My idea goes exactly on these lines.
First off all with the new Dark Riders and Corsair Raiders , 2 more skirmisher units come into play.A fully skirmisher army could easily be created.

Secondly , although the army has been upgraded dramatically , it’s fragile nature still remains.

The dice rolls (to hit & to wound) remain the same but the effect has been improved. Naggarithan Blades and RXB MK 2.0 sees to that.

The FAST ENOUGH rule is not as powerfull as the HIGH ELF ASF but it’s much more fun and promises some really bloody battles.Definetily not Broken since the opponent still gets to strike normally even if hit back.

The new Cauldron is more oriented in a witch elf army and it’s powers for once make it’s point’s worth.The dangerous and bloodthirsty nature of Khaine justifies sacrificing your own warriors to gain his blessings. Offcourse that’s what Slaves are for ..hehe!!!

Slaves is something DE should always have.Cheap expendable units.Nuff said.

In the end there are many good units and items now in the armybook but there will not be enough room to field them all.100 Pts tooled-up assassins in infantry units will make for killer combos but the cost will go through the roof. I DO BELIEVE IT’S BALANCED.Anyway it’s not anymore broken than 2 HE Dragons , a 2nd Generation Slaan , a Dwarf Anvil or an empire gunline with 2 Steam Tanks.Just try to take on those kind of armylists with the current DE armybook.

Comments are always welcomed but keep in mind that so far the Druchii are one of the weakest armies and struggle to win any fight. I have seen much more powerfull ideas around , so this is only a modest attempt to upgrade my beloved Dark Elves.



P.S. 1) I would offcourse include an updated Cult of Slaanesh list in the new Armybook.
2) DE magic should also become a little more destuctive.Haven’t thought about it any deeper though.
3) One last thing ….. INCLUDE SHADOWBLADE …. PLEASE!!!!!!

Ok, I read through it and first off, dont use caps like that. Just dont. It doesnt help get your point across and makes it much more difficult to read.

Ok, so what I remember because it is quite a long list.

Dark Riders skirmishing... so we have skirmishing fast cavalry that flees 1d6 less than a normal horseman? That doesnt make a lick of sense

No Beastmaster? In an army that is defined as having beasts? I think the new book will have more beasts and beastmasters, not less

Cauldron of Blood: Just no no no on the restriction as the Cult of Khaine (where the CoB comes from) is not allied with the Sorceress... Thats why a sorceress cant join a unit of witch elves...

As for the RxB... I dont think making it more complicated is the answer. And the logic behind the unit cant put poison on a different sized arrowhead is silly... also We dont mess around with warpstone much

Strike Fast Enough is just a dumb way to stop ASF from ruining us. Absolutely no originallity here and I would be appalled if a blanket rule to cover up the ASF blanket rule was given to us

Not sure why the Lifetaker would get S4... doesnt make any sense compared to RxB's

Banner of Nargaethye is still ridiculous overpriced for a t3 model even if we can give him a shield. Still worthless imo unless you march backwards ^^

NO NO NO NO NO on the Slaves. Slaves are our currency. I dont joke you with 100$ bills so why would I throw hundreds of slaves at you on the battle field. Also, Im reasonably sure that slaves if given weapons or a chance would try and attack the Dark Elves

CoC went down a few points but RXB are usually worthless on these. Atleast give us the option to take them without RxB

CoK still worthless compared to every other armies Heavy Cav

Every elite champion shouldnt get magic items. Thats a High Elf thing and semi represented in the fluff

Having Repeater pistols on the RBT crewmen seems worthless as they would just shoot the RBT...

Also, Turning Black Guard into a kind of mix between Phoenix Guard (4+ save) and White Lions (Stubborn) seems like you are just copying the High Elves...

Overall some nice ideas but some either not fully developed or not well thought through...

Right ok, now where to begin

I shall give you the AP rule, because i personally like it myself.

Why oh Why oh Why is the Repeater Crossbow more complex than before? just why? if it isn't broke don't fix it. Personally the RXB's work pretty well at the moment... just as they have done for the last 3 editions.

Fast enough rule...again why? your just giving the dark elves a rule that is just making them broken, no one would ever want to charge them again, the result would just be armies sitting back and shooting/magic us to death, and waiting for us to charge. Sorry but you need to have a long hard think about this, i have no idea what Games Workshop is planning but i doubt it would be something like that, it would break the army utterly.

Assassins, i like the idea just....Far too cheap

Why a Master Assassin? there would only ever be 7 in Naggaroth, 6 in the cities and then Shadowblade, it doesn't make sense to have them on the field of battle, they would be under malekiths orders at all times.

the Mistress, i love so no complaints there

no complaints from magic items

Dark Riders.... why?? they cannot get anything as skirmishers, not even a -1 to hit, they cannot cancel ranks... that is the worst idea in the history of worst ideas.

slaves.....NO NO NO NO

Executioners....18pts more like it not 13...

why are corsairs special??? and why the beast herd rule... no no no, you cannot steal rules from other army books.

Black Guard....again why? i hate your rules with them, your just making a cheap knock off of PG and WL, make them original.

Cauldron of Blood....NO NO NO, the Cauldron is a temple artifact not a sorceress artifact.. thats just wrong... and i do not like the rules either.


To sum up you have tried to fix the army book, but instead you have broken it utterly, no one would charge the dark elves anymore, and the army would just be shot and magic missiled to death, you have taken away nearly every tactic that a dark elf uses to win a game.
i am sorry for being so blunt, but that is what i think of the army list.
And once again i say, NO SLAVES, they are currency not weapons, thats like going to war with a gun that shoots Pound/Dollar Coins at the enemey at a rate of 100 coins a minute.

Im really asking myself where this slaven thing is coming from. Only because of the text in the Army book? Using Slaves is so not Druchii like.

A fast, small, deadly and fearsome Army full of very specialised units using half dead, not skilled, slow wrecks of humans like skaven do? IMO it doesnt fit in a DE army AND for what do you want to use them?

As a screen?Tthey are to slow.
As cannon fodder? They are too weak. (remember the Bret Men at Arms)

I see no use and no reason for slaves.

Overall: It seems like you have had 2-3 different ideas on how to improve each unit, added them all, and then reduced the cost of a few units for good measure; I personally think that many of your ideas are way over the top.

Fast enough: What Azure said

Assassins: far to power full for the points, yes, fanatics have the potential to cause a lot of damage in relation to thier price, they are however rather random, and most importantly, they do not affect combat resolution.

Master Assassin: Like the idea of an assasin lord, dislike the rules, I have always felt that shadowblade was overpowered, you should never be given the option to simply point at something and kill it (like in the case of the special rule for the SoC sea patrol list and shadowblade).

Witchelf hero: The option of riding a manticore must be limited, the abilty to take four manticores in 2000pts is very overpowered.

LIFETAKER: was fine IMO

MANTICORE HIDE : Far to cheep for the effect.

CITY GARRISON: I would personally prefer to keep spearmen and crossbowmen separete (like we have now), also, the crossbowmen are to cheep to have your new special rules (which I find overly complicated, one idea would be to have the option to buy one of them for a unit at aditional cost).

Dark Riders: Why would you destroy one of our higest used units? Firstly, dark riders are fine (though it would be nice with an option for a melee champ as well as a ranged one). Secondly, the skirmish rule means that they no longer can negate ranks.

Slaves: strongly dislike the idea (from a fluff perspective), we already have cheep sacrifical units as it is (dark riders, shades, harpies, 10 man warriors).

CoK: The sea dragon cloaks are far to powerfull, it also does not make sence for them to have the option to take crossbows, they are heavily armoured knights, not hunish horsemen.

Shades: The price reducion is unwaranted, the option to take an aditional hand weapon would be nice, but should cost 2 points per model (so 16 with extra hand weapon). The price tag would have to increase by an aditional 2-3 points IMO if you want one of your shooting rules.

Corsairs: definitly needs something defining, since they atm are rather redundant due to the warriors.

Repeaters: don't like the pistols, warmachines should not be able to stand and shoot.

Hydra: The breaths are far to powerfull, the old S3 breath could wreak tremendous havoc if used corectly, dislike the option to make it stuborn, does not make sence fluff whise IMO (they are traind to be vicious combat beasts, not guard dogs).

Cauldron: The cauldron is not broken as it is, the reason why I don't usally field it is due to the fluff. The ability to give both hatred and bloodfrenzy is very, very overpowered. The ward save boost to the withces are far to powerfull, whiches are also fine as it is (I once agian do not field them very ofthen due to fluff, but they have yet to fail my when I field them). The cauldrons are the propery of the cult of khaine, the cult does generally not like the convent, so why, should you need a sorceress in order to field a caulrdon? I don't like the sacrifice idea, it is a fun idea, but I personally think it is overpowerd.

NAGGARITHAN BLADES: not shure if I like it or not, it is very, very powerfull (yes so is ASF).

There is no reason for champions to be able to use magic items.

I genereally feel that your list is very overpowered, the above mentioned list are tough, but can be beaten as it is ( the dual high elf draons aren't that bad though, the dragon mage dies horibly to only a little shooting).

First off: as everyone else says:
the CAPITALS are annoying to read... (has got something to do with the human mind only seeing the overall picture of a word rather than analysing the word letter-by-letter - the CAPITALS mess that up...) use bold or italic or underlined text instead. much more pleasant to read.

ok... about the list:

ancient foe: no thanks, that makes a battle standard against the HE somewhere near useless

naggarithian blades: sounds nice... i always thought that AP would be a fine rule

RxB: too complicated. a warrior would have to carry an awful lot of ammunition around. and elves would not use warpstone anyway... that is is for skaven skaven... just leave them with AP - that will be fine!

fast enough: no way. absolutely no way. sorry, but even the name does not sound like there has been a lot of thought put into this. it is simply overpowered and doesn´t even sound druchii!

assassins are too cheap: remember fanatics are not as reliable as a WS9 - 5 attack - AP monster!!! fanatics often tend to develop a fatal affinity to woods or the likes. assassins tend to show enough self control to avoid this undesirable end.

master assassin: remember that shadowblade is 360 points? this one is, if i saw that correctly only a 175 points, which is a lot more deadly and a lot less expensive than a fully kitted out hb on foot.

WE hero: i always wanted to have them back... but a manti for a hero choice seems a bit too much, don´t you think (i can see 1k armies with 3 mantis coming along...)

magical items: lifetaker has to be 40 points, then. 30 and S4 and always hitting on 2+ and re-rolling wounds is an awful lot of nice things for only 30 points...

ending the enemy magic phase for 40 points is too good - make it 55 points so that only a HS can get it. missing out on a magic phase in less than 2k can be devastating.

city garrison: fine

dark riders: completely broken. there is no way that cavalry becomes skirmishing, rank breaking and can shoot+flee and then the whole thing for 18 points... no way... absolutely no way...

NO SLAVES IN A DARK ELVES ARMY!!!

CoKs: not fixed at all. still too expensive and still just as bad on the charge. all you added is defensive power. and druchii are not defensive. they don´t need better protection. they need to be more hitty for 30 points, like dragon princes!

executioners: too expensive - remember that swordmasters are 2 more points and own any number of executioners in combat, even if said executioners happen to have 2 attacks...

shades need poison and WS5. 15 points. thats what i think, at least...

witch elves: why do they not lose frenzy with a character? she´s just another witch elf, after all. 6+ saves, no matter what kind, hardly fix anything. two 6+ saves are worse than a 5+ save. and even a 5+ save is ignored by so many attacks out there... not improved. made worse, in fact, considering that they are supposed to be far better than that at 13 points and now we still pay 13 points without getting anything better in return... no thanks...

harpies: nope, they need to use the ld of the beastmasters you kicked out of naggaroth...

RBT: and what are those poor crewmen supposed to be doing with the RxB pistols? scratch their back? 6 S4 AP shots are always gonna be better than two RxB pistols - the RxB pistols hit on 4s and wound T3 fast cav on 4s and don´t ignore their save... consider the damage the RBT would do instead... what would you choose to fire?

BG: i thought we were over unmodifiable armor saves... and over rip-offs, too. make them special, instead making them look like someone copied the page in the HE book with only one candle in the room...

cauldron: ever read the fluff of a cauldron? a sorceress is the last person to lay her hands on one of those babies... and it is terribly overpowered too. that machine is like a super-duper-mega-double corpse cart with bonus... and the whole thing for free as well...


general comment: you have tried to make our horribly underpowered army balanced... what you have created is a horribly overpowered army which has nothing to do with the fluff at certain points. you need to put a lot more thought into what you are writing there. and i really need to go to bed now...

HUZZAH!

oh, one last thing:
@Voodoomaster: I thought of slave units more like a shotgun with gold nuggets as ammunition :D

OK...

I didn't know about the fluff side of the cauldron , so the High Sorceress leading the army thing is out.

Skirmisher Dark Riders may not gain the -1 to hit with shooting but theyr loose formation allows them to charge targets from tight passes.
Imagine them charging from between 2 tight infantry blocks.
Shoot and flee 2D6 balances out that you get to shoot your opponent before you split.This must include a downside hence the 2D6.

I dissagree about the slaves. I insist they should be in the new armybook. Under the wip of a slavelord they will make for some very dissiplined troops.We use them for many things (fluff wise) and in battle would not be any diffirent.

The assassin is too cheap , you are right. Something like 60-70 Pts and WS6 & 4 attacks would be better.

The exchangable arrowheads is a simple enough rule.
Why do you have a problem?
Just decide before shooting for A.P. or poison or magical.
You all had objections about me calling them "warpstone".
Duhh ... ok ... sorry ... call it enchanted or anything you like , just magical.

Corsair crew for the RBT's have rxb pistols that they in effect can only use as stand and shoot.
This makes charging our warmashines more deadly.

You all didn't like the "fast enough" rule.
Why?
What did you say when GW gave ASF to the HEs?
Now that they have it , how do you deal with it.
Please don't give me the ..." ill charge him in the flank"...or such.
I play in the Greek national team and our club is of the highest standards.
At this level you never get to flank charge the fast/nibble HE army.
After the new HE armybook i still havent won a game Vs HE's
and i'm really ... really good with Dark Elves.

I'm sorry for my bitter tone but i can't understand why you wouldn't like a DE army that would actually win some tournaments.

Anyway , i accept your coments (although some was very sarcastic) and i can see that my point costs were very off.
I'll try to be more realistic about it in the future.

Ok....

I like Slaves... But Most don't.... I think of them not so much as currency but a Means to an ends... Plus I want to paint up some Zombie models as slaves and stick a beast master in the back tank. I won't cry if we don't get them... If I wanted an unstoppable Horde army I would play Skaven... or Chaos Dwarfs.

Assassin as a Fanatic like unit upgrade isn't bad... but you have to lowball his power. First attack Prior to all other strikes... Even impact hits. At 50 pts... he should be WS7, S3, T3, W1, I6, A3, LD9, SV None.... Equiped with 2 poisoned blades. Models slain by the assassin on the first round of combat do not count towards comabt resolution and after the first round the assassin may either act as an independant model or as a unit champion.

personally I would rather just see the assassin we have now be allowed to take an RXB. and deploy as a scout and apply his temple of khaine posions to his RXB bolts as well as his blades.

Armor Piercing Rule.... I have wonted that for our AWR since Day 1 (providing they cop out and give us an AWR rather than individual unit improveemnts)

some kind of upgrade tot he RXP is in order IMO... but yours is too complicated. Just remove one of the 3 draw backs to it. Draw backs are Crappy Range, the -1 to hit on multi shot and S3.... so make it 30" Range, OR Make it fire volley with no penalty OR make it S4. OR just leave it the way it is and giv eit Armor Piercing OR poison.

Witch Elf Hero... I can't even remember your rules for one since the all caps hurt my eyes and I lost my place a lot. but We need one. If it can ride a matin as a hero ... the manti should still cost an extra hero slot. this eliminates the excessive manti population and makes people think twice about taking them. (Im a big Peggy fan)

New Magic Items.... yeah we need some... and afew of yours aren't bad.

Cauldron and other Ideas... I recommend that you read the Entire rule book for a Race.... and possibly skim the rule books for the other races as well to get a feel for the general fluff of things before drastically altering peoples ideas of the way things are.

Most of your ideas aren't terrible.. its just too much of a good thing makes you cheesey... and most DE players Pride themselves in not being cheesey, they would rather lose with a balanced army that requires skill and indepth game knowledge than win with a cookie cutter Cheese ball list like Chaos or Dwarfs... or worse yet... Chaos Dwarfs.

Besides we have a list we can go cheesey with if we are tired of playing regular DE.... Go buy a unit of Chaos Knights, a box of warriors, stick malus on a chaos steed and call him Druchii annointed... and get 4 boxes of Marauders with Flails or Morning stars. Add some Dark Riders and Cold one knights and a unit of Slaanesh Girls and play a cult list.

(I love Marauder heavy cult lists... at 5 pts each its closest we will ever get to having slaves.)

I bet my left arm , every single DE player wished he could field a powerfull army after he had just been massacred by Karl Franz with 2 Steam tanks ,
Thorek and his anvil , a Sylvania list , Teclis and 16 PD and so on .....

I saw a DE player rip the armybook apart after 3 massacre defeats in a row.
None of my ideas is as powerfull as Teclis on the field.

The DE need to have an edge on the battlefield or they are done for.
I love my Druchii , i win many battles but they desperatly need a serious upgrade , don't you see that?

Waerik please don't tell me about balanced armies.
There is no good playing you can do against a Skaven Bell and 20 jeezails on the field.You will get shot to pieces , no matter how good a general you think you are ..... get my point?

I'm simply saying that Druchii need to have an antidote against that kind of lists.Don't use them if you dont want to , but have them for when you need them.

The essence of the problem is (for instance) the HE list, and the Skaven list are not all they should be either. At certain points they are horribly broken -like Skaven with too many things that are too cheap that can autohit, autocast, or generate absurd amounts of static cr, what have you. And HE is only specifically broken against DE, because we are the army that relied most heavily on striking them first in combat. Just because those lists are kinda broken, doesn't mean ours should be. It means those lists should be unbroken, and they probably will be, if the things you hear coming out of GW are true. I mean, they know Thorek and the Anvil is overpowering, the Skaven/dwarf autohit weapons are absurd, they recognise that there should not be two War Altars or two Steam Tanks in any game, but that there often will be. If they want to really stitch up Empire cheesers, all they need say is, War Altar (without Volkmar) and Imperial Dragon and Steam Tank each take up a rare slot.

I'll leave the picking apart of your ideas singularly to others - this is just my general, theoretical buck-o-five.
