Re: hydra breath attack
yes it can. Page 67 of the BRB, top right.
in Close Combat a model with a Breath Weapon can use it together with its normal attacks. it will cause 2D6 automatic hits on the unit and follow the normal rules for it from that point on

Yes, but it you don't use the template, instead you roll 2D6 and determine how many got hit.

Re: hydra breath attack
I suppose the other version of their breath attack would also do 2D6 hits too -- but at the strength of the number of wounds it has left.

Re: hydra breath attack
The other version is not a breath weapon though, it's a regular shooting attack (and it's terrible)

Yeah. With the regular shooting attack you wouldnt be able to use it in combat. And as Dalamar said its awful awful. Always take the breath template on your hydra, and if you can, try to fire it before you enter combat for max damage - unless you want to stack the combat res. Only ever worth to use it in close combat if the enemy will lose steadfast due to it. Or if the combat is really tight, and you need just 1 or 2 casualties to win it

It'd almost be a decent chaff-clearer if it didn't need to roll to hit...

Yeah 100%.
But with 8" range its almost always long. And multiple shots. And having moved. Which means 5 shots hitting at 6's. If you're LUCKY, it inflicts a casualty... I have no idea what GW designed this for. There is literally no situation where I can see this as being an advantage over the template. Or, thats a lie. There is one situation. Where a monster with a regen save marches to within 4" of your war hydra without charging it. Hu hu.

Re: hydra breath attack
If it was quick to fire and possible to shoot after marching, it would be decent. Not amazing but decent.
Same thing with medusa's gaze attack. Quick to Fire would've made it a pretty good attack.

Quick to fire not as crucial as march and shoot, really...

Re: hydra breath attack
Hitting on 5+ would double its effectiveness. Able to stand and shoot from any distance would make it a threat to small units wanting to charge it.
