Balthazar Gelt

Post by gerryb56 »

Played against him today and was told he had a 3+ Ward to shooting and a 2+ Ward inc MR1/2/3 to magic missiles.

When I checked the book tonight it says he has a 3+ ward to shooting attacks...........

Are we now classing MM as a "shooting attack "always thought they came under " ranged attacks" rather than shooting ?

Magic resistance stacks with any all-round ward save that a character has, to determine your ward save against damage done by magic missiles, direct damage, and black horror. If the 3+ ward is specifically "3+ ward against shooting attacks", then any magic resistance he may have will not stack with that ward when calculating his magic ward save. Only the natural ward save that you would also get versus melee attacks would help here. (Unless he has another ward specifically versus magical spells, like cloak of twilight)

So in other words: in no possible way can that dude ever achieve a 2+ vs magic missiles, because a magic missile is not a shooting attack, but a magical attack carried out in the magic phase, but distributed like a shooting attack (which does not make it a shooting attack). At most, he could get a 4+ ward versus magic if his enemy has 3 wizards.

1. Could MR stack with ward save?
<checking the Empire AB>
Balthazar has 3++ against all shooting attacks, and a MR(X), where X is 1, 2 or 3 depending on the number of opponent spell casters.
<checking the BRB>
P.72, Magic resistance is a bonus to the ward save (sorry Thraundil, but the ward save needs not to be all-round).
So the answer is yes.

2. Is MM a shooting attack?
P.31, MM description specifies "(just as if the wizard was firing a missile weapon)". "As if" means it is not actually a missile weapon.
P.36, a source of confusion comes from: "Many spells inflicts hits or wounds on your enemies - you can find out how to resolve these on p.40 of the Shooting Phase." Even though the resolution of MM uses same rules p.40 as missile, it does not make MM a shooting attack.
P.38 tells that the Shooting Phase is when missile weapons are used. Note that MM are not used during Shooting Phase but during the Magic Phase.
P.88 tells what is a Missile weapon (MM are not included), and specifies it is fired during the shooting phase. Unlike MM.

So your opponent cheated you for the ward save against MM.
He could have 6++ if you had 0 or 1 wizard, 5++ if you had 2, or 4++ if you had more.
