Spelling and Grammar

Post by Rork »

Of late there has been a marked drop in the quality of posts from some of our members.

We do expect all members to take their time with their posts. This is a forum - it doesn't matter if it takes two minutes or three minutes to create a post, but if taking three minutes means you post something coherent you'll be thanked by all.

A post that makes no sense makes you look like an idiot.

We're not expecting literary prose, we appreciate that many of our members either speak another language primarily or have issues with literacy. But you're sitting in front of a computer - Computers have spell checkers, the internet has dictionaries. Such things can go a long way to help you to be understood by the rest of us.

And even if it still isn't great, we know you've tried. And the bonus is you don't look like an idiot - and therefore everyone is happy.

I would like to add, there are certain members, whose posts I have learned to avoid. If you've actually come up with an original and intelligent thought, it will be overlooked simply because trying to wade through the mistakes, gibberish, and lame attempts to drive up your own post score, are too painful. A little thought while composing your post, a moment of time to proofread your post, and refraining from flaming/bashing/trashing someone elses thought through idea, will go a long way towards making these discussions more productive and enjoyable.

While flaming is a seperate issue from the one that Rork brought up, it's one I think needs an equal amount of address. These Rumor Discussion threads seem to draw flames and trolls like the Chaos Wastes. ;)

In general, one of the worst offenses in D.net posts is the simple lack of punctuation and correct capitalization. Spelling mistakes happen; one or two can be overlooked. Punctuation and capitalization are so painfully glaring in a post when done incorrectly or not done at all that they just plain hurt, and make me, for one, stop reading the post.

Examples include:
- Not capitalizing the first letter of a sentence.
- Capitalizing random words in the middle of your sentences.
- Not capitalizing new threads correctly -- a pet peeve of mine.
- Over-use of commas.
- Incorrect use of semicolons; if you don't know how to use them, don't.
- Not using periods to end your sentences. Eventually, my eyes need a moment to digest what you're saying. The natural pause of a period is what gives them that.

The best advice here, is that everyone should read what they have written BEFORE they hit 'submit'.

Am I one of the worst offenders? I know I'm good with spelling as I spell check every time but my punctuation may be a bit rusty. So, am I one of these people?

I also know I randomly capitalize words within my sentence, it's a habit which I must destroy.

Yes Khel, and while were at it you have a PM from Rork from months ago ^^.

Though our (and by our I mean you and I) posts tend to have a bit of odd punctuation I think the offenders are the people where we have to quote them and then decipher before posting. ^^

It's my job to yell at people with bad capitalization, and I will do it if you don't listen to what Aleraen posted.
