Exploring the return of the Herald

Post by Rork »

Of late there has been some discussion about the possible return of our own webzine, the Herald.

The next stage is this very thread - seeing how many people would be interested in becoming a part of it to see if we can really get if off the ground.

We'd mainly be looking for artists and article writers to start with, with much of the editorial and technical side covered by existing Admin and Herald staff.

The thinking right now is to keep it to around 4 articles per edition, probably on a quarterly basis.

So if you think you've got something you'd really like to share with the community, something so good only the page in a magazine would do, now is the time to put yourself and your ideas forward.

Depending on many random and unpredictable things.
I would definitely like to write an article every now and then, though I doubt I'd be able to write monthly. Quarterly feels more like it but that's where the random part comes in :P

Should we find we can restart, it would be preferable to be something sustainable - quarterly would allow people time to write stuff around whatever else goes on in their lives, while giving a frequent enough mag for people to read.

I suppose I should also frame the type of article people could write:

Background/Stories

Tactics (Be it army wide, unit-focused, opponent-specific)

Army lists could link to tactics, though backing it up with usage/experimentation would be needed to get the most from it.

Painting & Modelling (Anything from specific effects to a beginning to end approach to a given model)

Battle or Tournament reports (Pictures, and preferably maps, would be a must!)

And probably some other things, too.

I would be more than willing to help with editing OR some tactics articles. Or merely a little tournament right up or something to be tossed in =P

I wouldn't mind writing up Quarterly short stories based on the latest adventures of Group 22!

If you're interested, let me know, and I'll see what I can do!

I think quarterly would be the way to go on this - at least at the beginning - and see how it goe. If there's enough interest in it then maybe it could become more regular. Of course the big problem with this is the same one that caused a lot of problems when the webmag was a monthly - oh yes it was great and we all so much looked forward to reading it each month, but a monthly mag demands a huge investment in terms of time and effort on the part of all the contributors, leading to many having to admit that they simply didn't have the time to do it all.

With hindsight, keeping it quarterly might have been a better move, and this is probably even more true today, given that the site isn't quite as active as it was in those heady days following the free advertising that was the Druchii revision article in White Dwarf (which is how I too discovered this esteemed website all those years ago)

I have a few unpublished fluff articles ready to go if and when the time comes...

can i suggest adding in a painting/modeling comp much like the chaos dwarf forum do:

In the run up the the mags release have people enter models which haven't been shown on the forum yet, and then let people vote for there fav one. in the mag announce the winner and have a little gallery of the model and its development as well as the runners up and other competitors.

You could have open voting where everyone PM's a specially made account, or you could limit it to either just moderators voting (you guys have your own forum don't you where you can do that sort of thing without us seeing?), or even just those putting the mag together. One of the main appeals of the CD forum to me is seeing all the awesome conversions that get underway, and its my main stopping point here too.

If no one else volunteers I'll run it, although it wholly depends on what work I have on at the time to whether I can run it. (although my modelling ability lies near the bottom of the spectrum, so I'm sure there's better 'qualified' members who might do a better job).

Okey dokey, it's looking promising.

Anyone out there with some artistic skills? Cover and page art is going to be necessary, so if you think you're good at drawing Elves, let us know!

Focus on quality not quantity. Even quarterly publication is a lot for an effort that relies entirely on unpaid volunteers. Based on my past involvment with the Herald/Quarterly, I think twice a year is a better goal to shoot for. People get burned out.

I would be willing to proofread/edit as I did in the past.

^ once every 6 months would probably be easier for me if I got involved too. Every 3 months is probably managable but I can't tell what may or may not come up in the future.

6-monthly might cause interest to wane among the readers though, so I say quarterly, but let's get a pool of work ready before we start - that way we can take the pressure off a bit.

We all have a load of real life stuff that tends to get in the way of our creative activities, but if we have enough people onboard with a large enough body of work for more than one issue then I think its definitely achievable.

If we can get enough volunteers writing, we might not need every one of them to write for each issue. Some might be able to write an article every 6 months, other every 3, maybe some every month. Those could be gathered, and whoever becomes the editor could decide what shows in next quarterly (and I agree with darkprincess, 6 months is too much, people will forget that the magazine even exists in that time)

I expect I'll co-ordinate to start with, then talk with the editors about where we go from after the first issue.

You would send it either to me or one of the editors. Now that the holiday season is winding down for a couple of days, I'll start getting things organised and a bit more formalised.

I'm also able to take on an editor position of those are needed. I've been doing that in the past for a friend who writes game reviews for an online magazine so I have some experience under my belt.

If you are interested in Mordheim articles, I have recently finished the Druchii warband: http://www.druchii.net/viewtopic.php?t=64005 . And I can add some hired swords.

OK, I've added people who have expressed an interest in taking on particular roles.

The group has been created with a forum for discussion.

This doesn't mean we've stopped hiring or aren't interested in further articles. If you've got something to share, let us know!

I would love to join in, I missed out on helping the Ogrestronghold webzine, but I would still love to help here if possible. I have a few articles in mind....

I know a few artists IRL so I can ask around, but keep the position open.

I don't frequent the site recently, but I am interested in helping to make the Herald and contribute to the community this way. I am confident that no matter how tight the schedule, I will be able to write an article per quarter. In the worst case, a battle report (with pictures).

Currently, I would be able also to write:
- an article on a certain dillema in competitive army list building (if interested, I can write more precisely to Rork, but I'll avoid spoilers in this thread)
- a "know thine enemy" article about Warriors of Chaos

Additionally, I will ask a friend of mine who is good artistically and is a druchii player whether he'd like to contribute too.
