Does anyone actually bother reading the monthlies anymore? Sheesh.
According to the language guide published in the Jan. '04, part II, monthly (beginning on p19.), "druchii" should be phonetically pronounced...
(Brace for this.)
...the way it's written.
By which I mean, "dru" is pronounced "drou," French "ou" sound (or "dru," latin "u" sound), "ch" is pronounced like the "ch" from the Scottish "loch" and the "ii" is pronounced, well, "ee-ee."

No. You've never heard the word "loch," have you? The "ch" is pronounced like a really harsh "r" sound (not liquid, harsh).

Why not make the "ch" sound like a "g" in holland as in 'sGravenhage (classic name for the hague).

That's what the "ch" sounds like, like the "g" in "den Haag." Problem is, there's probably more people who know how to pronounce "loch" than people who know how to pronounce a Dutch "g" on this website.
Mind you, you never know...
Arquinsiel wrote:Ansob, you just pretty much described what he was saying. I always porefered the slightly softer version as is "tai-chi" rather that than the "ki" sound that a lot of others like.
How, praytell, does "a really harsh "r" sound" get you to a "ki" sound?

Actually, the "r" here is rasped, not rolled. And what I was asking is how you go from "ki" to "harsh r..."

I allways liked to pronounce it as Drew-Kee. I think that somehow sounds more Elvish then Drew-Chee. But I guess if it was ment to be pronounced as Drew-Kee it would be written Drukii or Drucii and not Druchii...

Yes but you are french and this is an english word, therefore the empashis used should be that of the english language (and yes, I am well aware that loch is not english).

I'm French, if you please (not "french"), and only by right of abode (Canadian and English by bithright) - and how is that relevant here? French or English, the "k" sound still has nothing to do with a harsh "r" sound - do you pronounce "car" "rhar?"

Abode is all that matters since it's what influences accent. And just because I'm too lazy to press shift is no reason to get offended.
You're missing the point though: The "k" in english is pronounced in an extremely similar manner to the irish/scottish "ch" in "loch" which is itself rolled in a similar manner to a harshly rolled "r". Understand? (incidentaly car is pronounced here more like "char" in that the "c" is also quite harsh. Sometimes it even become ki-arr depending on where you are in the country).

And like the "g" in "den Haag," yes. Not sure it makes anything clearer for people, but hey...
