Dragon bases
So with new new(ish) HE dragon being on the larger base, does that mean all dragons have to be? or is this something that will just get integrated through future army updates?
I don't have my rulebook handy so I can't look it up there

Well as the orcs still seem to be on the same base, and Zacharias the Everliving doesn't appear to be getting a new base or changed, I would think High elves are an exception, unless all elven dragons look like that. Hope this helps.

The rules, as ridiculous as this sounds, and god help me for even repeating this but the ruling is that you put the model on the base it comes with. The new HE dragon (and any other dragon you convert from the high elf dragon) is required to be on the new chariot sized base. Unfortunately, this really does make me want to get an old dragon as the new base is a HUGE nerf imo (any template, bigger los) the only advantage is bigger terror radius that I can see

logic
Wow, by this logic, that means the 4 giants I have for my orc army should stay on their 50mm bases as they are older models...

I never thought about the giants... good point!
so what if managed to put a new dragon (or giant) on the smaller/older base? would it not be allowed into a tournament?

Nope because it must come with the base it was delivered in. And yes, old giant models can technically be modeled on 50x50 bases (Though I'm a supporter of if a new model comes out, get off your lazy #$%@ and rebase yours)

true, I had a bunch of old terminators for my space marines, when the new ones came out my new box (actually it was box 3, I really like terminators) came with an extra set of bases, God pretty much told me to rebase my old terminators.

Do you think that some time down the line the new base sizes will be mandatory? Well for tournaments at least. And I guess it could make a difference so isnt it better to have one standardized size.
Personally though ill be rebasing my dragon lord, it’s a reaper mini conversion (all metal) and is massively top heavy. So the extra support is badly needed.

GW came out with a base size chart back in the mists of time. It stated what base everything should be on, however it is now getting seriously dated. Gav promised it would be updated but with him now gone who knows, but in fantasy technicly you are supposed to update your bases when they change unlike 40k.

Technically unfortunately we are still supposed to follow the base chart and those numbers havent changed Linda though this directly contradicts using the base the model came with. Its quite a predicament and since we have been waiting a year for FAQ I dont see the answer coming any time soon.

The High Elf Dragon Lord box comes with a Chariot base, thats what you use if you build that model, regardless of the army its for.
Older dragon models must be placed on a 50x50 base minimum, per the ancient base chart as it is the 'most recent' one. 5th ed dragon were on 40x40, but we can't have them on that small base anymore.

"Uncle Sammy, Are larger bases that bad?" asked the little child to the childrens T.V. show host.
"why yes billy, I do believe they are."
to me, larger bases just seem to hurt, it gives less mobility, a larger flanking range and taked up more space if it goes into a unit. the only upside being what Azure mentioned, larger terror radius.

Another upside is that you have more room for nice diorama objects, which to me is a big buff that outweights all the negative aspects.
Now it's been ten thousand years. Man has cried a billion tears.

But through eternal night. The twinkling of starlight.
So very far away. Maybe it's only yesterday.

Try, I did manage to fit a dying high elf captain on the new dragon base (converted to black dragon of course) but I was simply talking about in game use...
