Archaon, The Everchosen - How can the druchii beat him?

Looking at the stats of the Chaos Lord Archaon, The Everchosen, I am trying to understand how the Druichi could beat him?

He is UGLY. A 1+ armor save, 3+ ward save. WS 9, IN 7, 5 Attacks.

Malekith would most likely loose in a duel with him.

How do you think he could be stopped?

Welcome to Druchii.net, Firstborn.

Sadly, Malekith would lose in a duel against him, because gw likes to make crap rules for Malekith. However, there is still hope for the, below dreadlord build shouldn't have a problem taking him down.

Dreadlord on Cold One
Pendant of Khaeleth, Armor of Eternal Servitude, Crimson Death
Shield, Sea Dragon Cloak

This guy has a 1+ armor save, a 2+ ward save against archaon, a 4+ regen save, and 4 S6 hatred attacks. Just put him in a unit of Cold Ones, charge Archaon, and challenge with your dreadlord.

Mount a dreadlord on a cold one (so he causes fear and won't flee from Archaon) with PoK, crimson death and armour of eternal servitude. While Archaon's weapon ignores armour, with the regen and reverse ward save, you can hold out almost indefinitely. Between Archaon and his swords (chaos knights), your opponent will have spent ~1000 points, which means you will have a lot more of everything else on the board. Kill off his support troops (snipe any other characters or champions first with lore of metal burning iron) and then get your dreadlord into combat and issue a challenge as he has to accept. You should be able to get up about +5 or better in combat resolution and archaon will break, at which point the 55 points of harpies behind him will autodestroy. Whatever you do, don't let him get his attacks on rank and file as he will use the demon in his sword and shred your units in rapid order.

Thanks for the replies.

Is the dread lord on cold one the only viable counter?

Would it be possible for normal units to take him down as well?

If not, it seems like he could walk thru your army and pretty much not be stopped.

If Archaon can be killing blowed, an Assassin could potentially do the job for 154 points, however he would certainly die if he flunks his attacks first round.

Flank his unit, and break him with SCR + a few kills on the knights. Let him run through (there they come again) your harpies. The Everchosen killed by some harpies, whooe!

Archaon is both too survivable and too killy a character to defeat for even an elite unit to take out with any regularity. With the demon unleashed, he gets WS9 @ 10 x S5 no armour save attacks + 3 x S5 from his mount, is immune to psych and causes terror. Even hitting him on the flank with a FC unit will start you at +6, which is slightly less than his average number of wounds per round vs T3 elves. WE with a CoB giving them KB and a death hag BSB in the unit (that is on the corner and remains out of contact) with the ASF banner might be able to KB him as he will likely eventually fail a 3+ ward vs one of the KB attacks. Given that the WE will need 5s to hit him and will lose frenzy by round 2 though, even this is far from certain. Springing an assassin would likely make things worse as it would allow him a challenge, followed shortly thereafter by a roll on the EoG table when his 3+ ward prevents the KB and the last thing you need is Archaon with better S, T, A or armour save :)

assasin's: pray you get a lot of KB's, he's bound to fail his ward save 1/3 of the time (on average).

The old Crone with Killing Blow benefit from the Cauldron? She might be useful because she's got bucket-and-basket-loads of attacks, at least more than an Assassin could get. The problem would be getting her to hit first or getting the enemy to ignore her.

Other than that, the Dreadlord would be the best option hands down.

nope - Hydra is the way to go :D

my hydra went up against Archaon twice - and regened 20+ wounds from him! Before breaking him and running him down once and killing him the other time (ok so the Slayer of Kings did 3 wounds to him - sue me  )

Hydra with KB from Cauldron puts out 13 KB attacks against him ;) Should do fine.

To mathematically kill him with a killing blow you would need 18 hits, though.

I didn't thnk you could bless Hydras? Are you allowed? If so, that would have a decent chance of killing Archaon.

I don't do theoryhammer... it makes some things much more powerful that they actually are, while others feel very weak when in effect they're game changing.

Another KB Idea. Heartseeker with the CoB blessing + Hydra banner thats 5 hatefilled attacks from your dreadlord plus reroll to wound (increagin your chances A LOT)

To be honest, I don't like the odds of killing Archaon by wounding him. I've seen to many a chaos player call in a marker with the dark gods and save himself at the last moment with not one failed ward save.

In my opinion, we are better off with throwing a unit of CoK with the Banner of Murder at him and his escort. Have the Pendant Master/BSB in there to hold Archaon in one place while we kill his unit with st6 AP attacks. Break them from CR and crunch Archaon beneath the claws of our cold ones as we march on for new, tastier foes.
