The Big enemy Dragon!! - How do we deal with them!!!

Druchii masters, Ive gathered you here, to discuss how we can effectively deal with these wyrms. In mine and most other competetive gaming groups. Im often seeing dragons..

HE star dragons. sometimes 2 in one army.
Chaos dragons, most of the times a lord, and special shield and ward.
VC dragons. who have a -1 to hit penalty as well.

Last time, i fired constant on it. With reapers. In the end i only put 3 wounds on the beast,. This is not a thustworhty way to deal with them..

How do we deal effectively with them, otherwise then bringing our own black dragon.

Invincible Dreadlord on some kind of mount, with potion of strength and a high strength weapon, probably lance. As for chaos with the runeshield I am at a loss. I too would like to hear ideas on this one.

It might be possible with the same build to dash in, kill the drake, get killed and avoid the lord for the rest of the game depending on high manouverable your list is.

The thing is. At the end of the combat phase. you are outnumbered by an terror causing unit! and auto breaks.

That and the dragon can fly

I usually find a manti-lord with setup suggested above can handle most nasty things. Negates the terror thing. Fight fire with fire maybe, use a dragon too?

Couple of easy solutions.

Dreadlord on Cold One (or foot, doesnt really matter) with PoK and Crimson Death. You should be able to put a wound per turn into the dragon provided you can get iunto combat with it.

Manbane + Rending stars. Essentially 2 instant wounds whenever shot. Absolutely ridiculous.

Bolt Throwers + combo charge from anything. If it is softened up even warriors can finish it off.

4 Bolt Throwers will usually do the trick

Actually Reapers are a very trustworthy way of dealing with a lot of big things, especially dragons and their ilk.

Facing a creature with T5 and little to no armor? Do a multi-shot. Assuming you take 2 Reapers, that's 12 shots at S4, with -2 Armor save. That makes mincemeat out of Carnosaurs, Manticores, etc.

Anything with T6 and armor? Use single bolts. All things considered you have an excellent chance of really messing said creature up.

Reapers are just great against everything, and even if you don't get a clear shot at the monster they're just as great against infantry as well, especially heavily-armored infantry!

i love the executioners axe. Iv taken out several dragons and a hell cannon in the first round of combat with it. You just have to make sure you place your Lord with it in the ASF Black Guard unit. Also i love to take 2 Assassins with rending stars and manbane. Its so awesome what those two can do to heavy cavalry and monsters.

Also you have to get that unit into combat with the Dragon. Difficult for you to catch him, and if I was him I'd generally prefer not to touch the Black Guard, knowing they're ItP and expecting they're ASF.

How about some Witch Elves? With Crone Hellebron?

That should do the trick. A bit expensive maybe? ^^

That or as said above...someone on a Manticore with Caledor's Bane.

Static Combat Resolution with the Ring of Darkness.

My solution would be as above:
Dreadlord on Cold One (so he can't score easy CR off wounding your mount while you're still manoeuvrable) with full mundane armour, Pendent, Caledor's Bane and Potion of Strength.

Throw all your attacks against the dragon instead of the rider and you can reasonably expect to do at least 2 wounds in the first and second rounds of combat (drink the potion in round 2 for an additional round at S7). If you've wittled the beast down a little beforehand (with Reapers, a Hydra breath etc) then that should do the trick. I've killed many a Stegadon, Dragon and Giant in this manner.

Also, no-one seems to have made the other obvious point yet: Repeater Crossbows. Most armies have at least 20 of these. Take aim at the large target and let loose a volley of 40. Personally I rarely leave for battle without 35 crossbows, be they on Crossbowmen, Riders or Shades and I don't care who you are, throw enough dice and the odds start to swing your way...

Other tactics:
Assassins with Manbane and Rending Stars
Dreadlord with Executioner's Axe
Anything with poison
Love the Reapers (I *always* do the big bolt harpoon in your face shot though)
A Hydra
Two Hydrae
SCR (less effective against Dragon Lords)
Tarpit it!

Reaper BTs are a fine choise, as said always use big bolts. Within 24" they hit on 2+, wounds on a 4 and causes a D3 wounds with no save. 2 RBTs do almost 1 wound per turn. Executioner axe is nice, but its sort of a one trick weapon, and cost 80 pts which means no PoK.

Xbows are pretty decent, on long range (why would he be within short range when he has 20" charge...?) if you fire with about every xbow you have (32x2 in my army) it does almost 3 wounds (32x2/2/6/2=2.67) on him, so with luck with RBTs and a full volley of xbows you can kill him in 1 turn (assuming they all see him ofc, but large targets are hard to hide). This can also be done from a safe distance.

If you go for Dreadlord with PoK and Crimson death I would much rather place him on a dark steed than on a Cold One, the dark steed can catch a dragon with its 18" charge, 14" just doesnt cut it. Imo this is a total gamble, you place your 300+ VP general in combat with something that autobreaks you if you fail to do a wound, and in the second round of combat your hate is gone, which means 4 attacks hiting on 3+, wounding on 4+ and the dragon gets a 6+ save, hardly garanteed to wound every turn (1.1 wound is avarage). Its also not completly garanteed your general remains unharmed, PoK is good but the dragon + character has a lot of attacks, it has a decent chance to slip at least one past PoK.

This is kind of funny but, 20 warriors full command, war banner, BSB + banner of nagaryte, receive the charge, and call a challenge with your champion.
+3 for ranks
+1 out number
+1 banner
+1 war banner
+1 bsb
+1 banner of Nageryte
------
+8 - max 6 for wounds on your champion, and you still win by 2, if you get lucky and manage to pass some save's.

but for real, might drop the Negaryte banner.
