Character choices-getting by without Black Dragon and/or CoB

Post by Kmd »

Hey. I am browsing druchii.net for quite a while, but I'm yet to find a competitive and widely accepted idea for the character selection that doesn't include one of the following:
- a black dragon
- hag BSB with CoB
- lvl4 + magic heavy support

I am looking for an alternative to these builds but at the same time I don't really like the idea off mounting characters on coldones, as I hate stupidity overall and would rather see the army as reliable as possible (which is also one of the reasons for not taking the manticore lord).

So what are your experiences with alternative setups to the mainstream dragonlord, is there any other way to make DE competitive? And no - shadestar/double hydra are just awful.

unkillable bsb on horse
2 level twos as you desire
lord on foot many options check the draich article on foot characters
roh in a unit of BG

I would re-think cold ones if you are avoiding heavy magic, cauldron, double hydra dragon et al.

Lord on horsie or on foot in a unit of Spears/Black Guard is a common sort of thing if you don't want to go with Knights.
Most of our cheaper magic weapons are good for this sort of role.
Executioners axe isn't bad if you have the standard of Hag Graef.
Then adding in either the Ring, pendant or maybe even Pearl and combined with Armour of Darkness or Armour of Eternal Servitude depending on what you like

This way your lord is nicely central to the army and will keep everyone in check. He is also tough to kill and can still dish out some damage.

For supporting heroes, there are many options.
Hag BSB without Cauldron
Multiple Lv 2 Casters with either the Dagger, Familiar, Cloak or Tome.
Scroll Caddy.
BSB- usually with Pendant
Chariot Master- can also be a BSB
Assassins- technically not characters but close to
Peggy Masters

The list goes on. Its best to have a try at a few different things and find what works best for you.

For support

Those are some really nice points. My main idea was to avoid the most cheesy/dull solutions, like BG death star, so would those be some competitive combos :

dreadlord, AoES, soulrender and RoH/some null talismans/ring of darkness(?) -> unit of BG with crimson death
master BSB, PoK, Sword of Might, pony -> unit of 20 SCR spearmen
caddy ->rxb's unit / deep forest
assassin ->spearmen

dreadlord, PoK, AoES/AoD, soulrender -> BG unit
lvl2, scroll, cloak ->rxb's
lvl2, scroll+pearl/scroll/dagger+pearl/scroll+guiding eye ->rxb's/spearmen
assassin ->in shades or BG

Would those prove to be competitive choices? Maybe it'd be wise to swap dreadlord and master (unit-wise)?
I like the idea of a master on DP as well, but would he manage to make a difference on his own (as in : without a dragonlord to hold his hand)? I suppose he'd need at least AoD and dreadlance or so?

thanks a lot in advance;)

Indeed, check the warmachine rules for how the Cauldron moves.
