they are large enough to charge a lightly armoured enemy in the flank to deny ranks and provide extra kills. you need to have the unit tied up with something else in the front first though.

Thanks for the info. but just for the sake of asking something, would it be a good idea to have 2-3 units of them in an army list

If you run them 7 by 2 +1, with Frenzy banner for extra attacks and COB hanging around for KB blessing, they can be devastating. Cast Okkams on them and they will kill everything and anything.

Since you cant run more than one frenzy banner, I wouldnt take any more units like that, Id instead run them either with handbows same formation, or in larger blocks.

I run 20 of them (SSS) along with witch elves, and in my experience, only the front rank is really important, as thats where their offensive power comes from. It is nice to have a little extra power from ranks and ablative wounds though.

I'd rather run witch elves 15 strong than corsairs though, as corsairs are dependent on the SSS, while the witches come with built in PMS :)

Current army setup, I'm working on, involves 2 x15 witches w. musician and 20 SSS corsairs supported by CoB BSB and Supreme Sorceress, along with a horde of executioners, this should really be able to bring the pain - and be fluffy :)

The problem I find with these guys is that they are just too expensve for a rather mediocre unit. I still like to use them anyway though.
Trick is to find some place on the battlefield where their abilities won't be heavily taxed and hence they are likely to survive. They can take on things like Night Goblins, small unarmoured archer units and skirmishers fairly well.

40 spearmen (shields, standard&musician, BoM)
16-20 corsairs (standard&musician, SSS)

This is usually my core (+some harpies). The two units have different objectives and I think they balance well together.

Spearmen:

- Deployed in horde they are pretty immense - especially if supported by a cauldron and buff/hex spells.
- Deployed in 5x8, They can combi charge other hordes with cauldron blessed CoKs or a hydra. That usually breaks everything.
- They usually attract shooting. I mean, the enemy can shoot at them all he wants - they are like worth no points!

Corsairs

- They make use of the very good SSS to get to 28 attacks - not bad.
- They can go toe to toe with alot of the cheap hordes around, preventing them from distracting the rest of the army.
- They are very good for combi charges, because they dont use so much space as the spearmen, and because of their much useful slaver rule.
- They are good for the tower scenario. Spearmen are not.
- The enemy targets other stuff with shooting because of their cloaks. Since they are fairly expensive this really helpes. This is a huge advantage they have over witches.

I think the best size is 20 for them. Its the maximum size for holding the tower in that scenario, and it allows you to deploy 2x10 against other hordes and get amazing 40 attacks.

I love running them AHW, but lately, I'm going 30 with Xbows because the move/shoot stand/shoot thins a lot more down with 5 or 6 across. makes me wish SSS worked on ranged lol.

I use 18 (din't have the points for 24!) in my army with various results. It sure is a good unit with SSS banner but they tend to need a close combat hero to support them. They rely on killing rather then static combat that spear dose so it depends on your army. If you go for mass killing take corsairs! if you want a defensive unit that hold your line go for spears!

I recommend a unit of 24 models in a 6x4 formation. then they are to bog to get shoot down and can lose some models before they get into combat! a small 14-15 units will never reach the opponent at an effective number and will therefore lose the combat!
