I'm always tempted to use this crazy axe. It calls me name, Dutchover, place me on a dreadlord. But, I want to know what do you all think is the best gear to place on the dreadlord with this item.

Maybe just the 6+ward in a horde of spears..........

Best way to use him would be to give him blood armour, shield and SDC. Then put him in a BG unit with ASF banner so hes not striking last.

Then, watch that unit destroy everything it hits.

I have to agree with Demetrius. You want something that is going to be striking first and hopefully killing enough to minimize attacks back. Obviously in this edition that is more difficult but ASF BG with a S6 champion and +1 attack from the cauldron has a pretty good chance of destroying a large unit in 1 turn. You do not want any attacks coming back at your lord though as he is a whole lot of points at T3 and 2+ armor save at best.

However, blood armour combined with I7? or was it I8? on Dreadlord, means he'll get his AS down to maybe 2+ before he receives attacks back.

You could go for a one hit wonder type against monsters by taking a toughness potion in conjunction with the axe. That's another alternative.

i use the axe allot and my favorite however expencive setup it to use him as countermeasure for holding up my hordebreaker unit. in 2500 i have 10 cold one knights and i have 30-40 frenzy corsairs as main combat (and a few other things like shades and crossbows and hydra's)i put him with the frenzy corsairs as well as my bsb with the banner of hag greaf (full mundane shield and whip for a decent armour save) and my dreadlord who's there to beat down characters or unbreakable swarms or ghosts, or just big monster things like steamtanks (o yes i have 1 killed steamtank on my list of course thats 5 attacks that autohit, wound on 4+ and do D3 wounds each which works pretty wel), abominations, hydra's, giants, chaos lords or just knights and other what have you's. my set up is the axe and then i see 2 options either the triksters shard and full mundane for 4+ combat save or blood armout. then you still have 5 points, I prefer to full those up with a luckstone, since i usually take blood armour and it has saved my dreadlord 3 times of dying in something of 10 games. he has only died once btw to a uber killy vampire.

of course if you really want to make him brutal, for instance if your taking on something like a greater deamon or a stank and want a 1 hit kill you can tool him up with a potion of foolhardyness and a cauldron blessing, (and the shard) for a total of 7 ws 7 hatred attacks that probably have st10 and do D3 wounds and he has to re-roll successfull as. but he dies to spells rather easy, although a 5+ward of the cauldron sure helps

Nice, thanks, I'm going to give him a try Sunday. I was thinking him with BG with ASF banner and +1 attack from cauldron would be the best. So I'll fit him with the axe, blood armour, SDC, shield, and of course BG unit of 7 wide. I'm always just creeped out by the idea of that vampire build that makes you lose asf and I to 1. Kinda BS if you ask me, also afraid he will get a nice hell blaster or cannon shot to mow through them before he can make it across the field. We'll see.

it happens and you'll need to plan accordingly to deal with these threats and neutralise them accordingly. The fact you're considering them is a good start. ;)

why a shield though, its a 2 hander so you can't use it i combat and you start with a 3+ save against shooting. i doubt you need it unless your planning on charging out of your unit (but then have asl so not reallg grand)

dead on. In 7th, apparently you launched into a couple of combats to drop the Blood to 1+ and then send him at whatever you needed in a big bunker unit.

One thing I've tried with a Sorc was a swap (Shadow). It's wacky when they rush on in for the easy kill and it just kinda... pings off :)

i'm just glad it's not 'on foot only' anymore lol war machine hunter anyone? lol

Not so much ;)

Newest Army Book has a significant LACK of that sentence fragment, and the only thing in the last errata (unless they released one in late January) is that "Strikes Last" becomes "ALWAYS Strikes Last". (caps mine)

which kinda hurts the ASF banner thing a bit- it's like fighting that guy that FORCES you to go after him, even though his I sucks >p But it's SPECTACULAR for evening out that pesky distracting STank when the real threat is the Cav.

the only thing that has 2 entries for Mounted versus on Foot is Spear. They removed the sentence with the specific info. 7th had it, 8th doesn't.

Executioner's Axe is a "On Foot Only" weapon because it is said so in the description of the weapon just next to the name like so:

Executioner's Axe (Models on Foot Only) ?? Points

Great Weapons were never restricted to models on foot only as a blanket rule, they just worked worse for mounted models (and that's not the case anymore)

But Executioner's Axe is a unique weapon available to characters on foot only.

yup as i said it's in the name (in bold even ) ,ot in the description. but that is also on of the more annoying things about it, as you sacrifice a good deal of speed being on foot ad well it aint that great against gobs or slaves.

Yeah, I just put him in a group of BG with ASF banner, he just carried the axe and thats it. Game went pretty smooth, ColdOnes had the hydra banner and destroyed a unit of 21 great swords round two, killed 19 of them on the charge with 10 COK and 1 master bsb, round 4, 5 out of 20 bg make it to the steam tank and my nice axe came into play. It was S10 vs T10 wounding on 4s, auto hits, I rolled 4 wounds and he gets no AS so that was a dead tank. I'm thinking about fielding this every game now, naked of course just for that strong monster that the rest of the elves cant handle.
