super N00B question!
Is there any point having a musician in a unit of 14 RxB's since the unit will be in two ranks of 7 allowing all of them to shoot and fight in CC. Swift reforming this unit seems silly to me?

swift reform will allow you to reform and shoot if flanked from behind or break ties in cc but I dont spend the extra points

Would the Ironcurse Icon on Black Guard be better then a musician in a 14 man RxB unit?

Musicians are possibly the best value things you can buy for any unit, increasing survivability and in the case of rxbs threat range. they not only allow swift reforms but in the common event of a tie they either give the opponent a break test or save you one.
Always, always buy a musician.

Moreover, +1 to rally.
For RXB, the most important is that without musicians, they may only move forwards or wheel 5" if they want to shoot. This limits their shooting range to an enlarged frontal area. They cannot do anything against flying targets landing behind them or on the rear side.
Swift reform is there just to allow them to turn 90° or 180° as a block - AND shoot
RXB must take musicians, just like fast cavalry.
All other units should take one, except sacrificial units.
If you really struggle to find 5pts, remove one RXBmen rather than drop the instrument.

not sure I 'get' this. please explain the correlation.
Iron curse IS an
ok defence item, but not that strong. I'd say Calisson is dead on.
Also BG are Special, and kinda like comparing apples to... very large... spiky...apples(?) lol

He has an amount of points spare that can get him either a Muso in the RxB, or the Ironcurse in his BG, would be my guess. Difficult to properly answer without seeing the list...

It has it's uses for 14 RXB but if you have the points it's best if you get to make them 20 strong as they can double as a ranked unit to help out in close combat when they can't shoot at anything anymore or you just really need the SCR. +5 Combat Res is nothing to be laughed at. 3ranks + banner + charge + potential flank = 6 SCR.

Just wanted to know if dropping a musician to give the BG a 6+ ward against war machines was logical?

No. Musicians are a must-have on RXB units.
What you could consider, though...
Make them one large unit (18) with Musician and Standard, and one small (10) with just the Musician.
That would net you 10 points, which you could use to upgrade the Standard of Discipline (Supreme Sorceress cannot be the General, so it is only half as useful there) to the War Banner.
