Re: 2014 ETC DE lists - opinions/analysis.

Post by Thraundil »

So, the overwhelming overrepresentation is the quadruble pegasus list. Many players agree that a master on pegasus is the single best entry in the dark elf armybook, with the pegasus lord coming in close second (no extra wound, but he still gets +1T and has the benefit of 50 pts more worth of magic items). Fine structure in this list type seems to be what weapons you give the characters (some go with halberds for one or two of the heroes). Only 3 pegasus lists use a single halberd. It loses a point of strength on the charge but gives grind power, and all of these have the dragonhelm to make up for the lost shield.
Other fine variations are the loadout of magic items. Many have a single master with no ward save at all. This puzzles me, as this makes an extremely attractive target. But they must have their reasons. Most masters are limited by the 50 pts max, so they sport items like talisman of preservation, armor of destiny, or cloak (if its not on the lord).

3 variations of the lord seems to be prevalent.
Cloak of twilight + dawnstone. The lord is the most valuable target, shooting wise, and it makes sense to give him the best save. His 4 attacks at WS7 also makes the most use of the cloak melee rule. Dawnstone means that against S6, he is equally protected as with a ward, and any lower S he is better off. I personally favour this build. Maximum protection for the lord + best use of the cloak.
4+ ward and ogre blade. The lord still has his ward save, you can squeeze in a luckstone if you want, but you get a S6 grinder and a tool vs banshees and other ethereals. While this is my 2nd choice for items personally, I think the strength of the pegasus heroes lies in their combined charge. Elves, as a rule, never want to take the grind vs stuff you need a constant S6 on, anyway.
4+ ward and crown of command. Tar pit. Usually a hero cant afford to solocharge stuff that he wont die to, simply because static combat res can gut him. Crown remedies this. I dont like the loadout at all though, because again. The strength is combined charges. This way you lose the benefit of cloak, but you dont gain the benefit of a magic weapon.

Other builds:

The classic dragon list. With warlocks you dont even need to spend points on a hero level caster. Theres just two dragon lists.
- One uses cloak, dawnstone and sword of might. I like this setup, as he has overall versatility and striking power. I would, however, favour an other tricksters shard on a dragonlord. The dragon does the high impact hits. But again, they probably have their reasons.
- The other uses talisman of preservation and a black dragon egg for maximum power in one combat round. While I like the idea of the breath weapon, S2 is just a bit dodgy... But he could in theory charge a MC unit and put down a world of hurt on them. His list is just overall strange, though. WE block with cauldron, cloak master, dragon lord, cold one knight unit... If he can get his stuff to work together it could be great for him, but. I dont know.
Overall I like the potential of a dragon list. But having the dragon puts a lot of requirements on the matchups. You cant put the dark elf list forward until all cannon opponents are gone. You dont want to face elite armies either, 'cos you need a target for the dragon. If they can get a good match, I could see it work out rather well - but it will never perform on par with the high elf star dragon prince.

Death star lists. There is a couple of cold one or warlock deathstars. Often a witch elf unit is a staple entry here, and if the bus is in warlocks, an executioner unit too. I like the overall concept, since the close combat phase is incredibly strong. But at the same time its got an all eggs in one basket feel, and I cant help but fear that the power units might be redirected. IF you can pick a good fight though, you're golden. There is also a shade star with the potential of frenzy. He will have to be incredibly careful in matchup pairings. Something like a trueflight wood elf list, any dwarf list, any mobile list at all, will completely clobber him. He desperately needs the right matchup, And even then he will be pressed to make points versus good opponents.

A few lists use monsters. But the general consensus seems to be they are not competitive enough.

Pegasus list great matchups: lizards, daemons, ogres, warriors, wood elves, beastmen, tomb kings, brets
Pegasus list "okay" matchups: empire with STank (no light councils or cannons), high elves, orcs and goblins (debateable), to some extent vampire counts
Pegasus list bad matchups: dwarves, skaven.

Overall, I think the pegasus list is a great tool on the hand of ETC teams. There are a lot of armies it can go against and come out with a slight win, and in some cases a big win, and at the same time it doesnt lost big to very many armies unless something goes very wrong. While dwarves and skaven are still in the opponent pool, you can never put the dark elf list up. But once just one of these armies are out of the pool, you could even put dark elves out there. Or you could use the list to counter. Its an overall great asset.

For this reason alone, I disagree with using dark elves as death star lists. In singles competition, death star lists and two tower variations are excellent picks, 'cos you just have to worry about yourself. But other races can make way better death stars than dark elves can. Several come to mind. Ogres, high elves, vampires, warriors, even brets if you wanna make a mounted death star list. All these also require a good matchup, but so does the dark elf deathstars. So if another race can do it better, I just dont understand why select dark elves for it. But ah well! You can certainly never put forward a deathstar list while several opponent types are on the board.

Anyways those are my 5 cents.

I think that went a little beyond 5 cents :)

I find little to disagree with you. Quad peg is definitely by far the go to build for ETC.
It is a shame that most of the lists are pretty much exactly the same when we have some pretty good other builds, but these seem to be comp'd too hard. I am pretty sure when they release the next ETC version that we will find this build is also toned down.

The only thing I don't like is the peglord because I feel the cavalry version is so much better with the stength 7 for going through tough things.

Also, why so many level 4's with the other trickster's shard? Don't get why you would want her anywhere near combat.

I love the french list. Amazing

I think ToTS on the SS is there so the SS is located btb with the DL, who is bearing Giant blade and Dawnstone, in order for him to win difficult challenges. DL would be putting 4 STR7 attacks, rerolling to hit and to wound, and opponent must reroll WS because SS is BtB with the DL. Given we strike first, even a Daemon prince needs to watch his steps, saving on 5+, 5++ rerolling successful ws.

It only proves my opinion about ETC. Vastly overwhelming single build with a few brave folk attempting some originality.

Where are sisters of slaughter? Where are Black Guard? Where is the Bloodwrack Shrine? Or Medusae? Or K-beasts or Hydrae?

ETC comp is a disease of warhammer.

Both agree and disagree. ETC is not warhammer, its another game, and its a team tournament which means. If you dont put restrictions, you will see warlock deathstars all over, because it is something other races cannot do and it is brutally efficient. hence the comp. Every team wants to win, so they take what they deem as "the best", and cost for cost our combat lord and hero slots are just the most efficient in every way. I'd love to play more twin towers or monster mash, and whip out the black guard. Trouble is, for the same points you can build an army that better fits the team environment - hence these builds. If you removed all but warlock restrictions, people would still run a few replicate builds. Because they test it extensively and find these to be the best around. And they want the best, 'cos they want to win.

Thanks for writing this all up Errdrigar.

It fairly shows the efficiency and power of quadruple pegasus lists.

I will be interested to see how the Dragon and CavalryStar lists get on in comparison.

I've categorised them, added countries and a Finland's list that I've missed previously.

@Thraundil: Thanks for analysing. I agree with most of your points. But 14 multiple pegasus lists that look more or less the same make me feel disappointed about our new book. It's a clear message that it isn't well written as major of possible choices were left at home in a competitive environment.

Marchosias, in my opinion ETC rules for magic, LoS, Look out Sir and other restrictions on artillery makes much more worthy to invest in heroes, maybe it would not be the case otherwise. I have jus played 8 games under ETC and peg masters perform much better than w/o ETC rules. Magic is far less devastating, you see far less IF cast spells, even less artillery can be found under ETC format. Not to speak about line of sight. In my opinion ETC environment in general, outbalances even more an already imbalanced hero section. But we will see how soon enough peg masters will be treated just like heroes on steeds under ETC. I just prefer more freedom to build armies, instead of adding more and more restrictions.

Just my thoughts though,

I wouldn't have fielded any of those choices in any competative tournaments... restrictions or not.

Without the restrictions, you would almost only see fast cav armies with shooting and magic.

I don't get the ETC hate... it is only there to get the most obvious dominating units down a notch so that you could see the less good troops get used more and make the game more balanced.

@Marchosias

I thought it was obvious, majority of the players have an exact copy of the same list with a few minor modifications. Witch Elves instead of Crossbowmen here, Level 3 instead of Level 4 there, but the lists are nearly identical. In no other tournament you will find lists from the same army that at *this* close in design

@Omnichron

You wouldn't have fielded them, that doesn't make them any less competitive in skilled hands. I'll be at buckeye this weekend with a Medusa and Bloodwrack Shrine and I'm feeling pretty good about my chances. (it's a 160 players GT by the way for those who don't know). I'd probably have sisters of slaughter too but I didn't feel like I can drop that kind of cash on a single unit.

Without the restrictions, you would almost only see fast cav armies with shooting and magic.

And what does a vast majority of Druchii armies at ETC represent? Fast cav armies with shooting and magic!

I think you may have mistaken ETC with Swedish comp. The first kills some obvious power builds, bottlenecking lists into a couple viable ones while Swedish simply says "go ahead, but you'll compromise somewhere else". While I'm not a fan of any comp. Swedish does a far better job of making armies more interesting then ETC comp.

And if ETC gets the most obvious dominating units down a notch... I wonder why those lists are filled with peg masters, reapers and warlocks which are kind of the go to powerful units.

@Thraundil

The problem is that there's a growing number of tournaments that are trying to push ETC for singles competition. It doesn't work. What does ETC comp bring to a team competition that no-comp wouldn't? The nature of selecting match-ups would allow for more freedom in army construction without worry of the "all-comers" build and you could see Dark Elves designed to take on hordes, to take on elite armies, to take on gunlines or armies with no war machines at all. Instead you have... peg lord, level 4, 3 masters, 2x darkshards, 4 reapers, shades and 2x warlocks... times 15 (at least)

Disclaimer:
In my tournament experience I had events where I faced the same army three times out of 5... but the list were never similar to the point of being nearly (or exactly) identical. I would hate to see the game I love turn into "download the latest list off the interwebs" which is what ETC is clearly leading towards.

Hey all, I'm the Australian ETC dark elf player so I fit under the "max peg" list which is very cookie cutter and super similar to many of the others. One thing you have to remember about the ETC is that is is a team event which means that you have to consider the whole team when putting things in your list. In the ETC, the focus is as much (if not more) on NOT LOSING as it is about winning. I normally run my lists with a big unit of witch elves, some monsters, execs and in general a very "mixed arms" list. Now on balance there's no reason why that list can't perform as well if not better at getting bigger wins than the fly around peg list. However it contains risk, which every team is trying to minimize at the etc. By being able to hide behind cover and fly around unhindered, the pegs are a very very effective method of not losing. Fill out the core and other options with shooty stuff which isn't super expensive so you can nab points here and there and get the 13-7 win. That will be the role of many dark elf players and they will do it very successfully. I'd expect them to be up there as the highest average points scorer, but this won't come from 20-0 wins but will rather be achieved through avoiding any 20-0 loses.

I recently went to a single's event with the list and came 9th/45. I only lost one game 12-8 but all other games were around 13-7 wins (I had one 20-0 against wood elves which can maybe be an exception to not getting big wins). I did it because I needed to practice within the team. Would I take that kind of list to another ETC single player event? Absolutely not as it doesn't have what it takes to win the tournament and I'd need to take different tools for that.

So a question to you.

Would your list look any different in a no-comp environment, knowing you might have to face the most outlandish armies and have to survive?

I agree with Omnichron's post.

@7avito: The magic limatation is a one of (not too many) things that are good in ETC. Without it the power level of magic phase is just an absurd. Entire regiments cleaning with 6-diced Purple Suns that bring back most, if not all, dice used, blind charging and hoping for IF Mindrazor from second caster... Where is place for strategy and tactics in that ? And what would you accomplish with an unlimited magic phase to deal with characters ? More Death Snipes ? Death Lore alone is broken as it's incredibly good vs so many threats. It should be limited.

@Dalamar: Comp is needed (ETC or else) as it limits most powerful choices. The thing is, that when they are limited, there are some clear 'second bests' choices. And this is not a fault of any comp system. But the game/book itself. It's hard to have variety when you can't select units that that could accomplish the same task in different ways.
Dalamra wrote:You wouldn't have fielded them, that doesn't make them any less competitive in skilled hands.

But yes, they are less competitive. When you are taking them you are limiting yourself as they are clearly weaker than others. I'm not saying they are useless at all. You can make them work, but it's harder to archive and sometimes it involves taking a risk. Don't get me wrong, in current tourney list I use, there is both a Medusa and a Hydra. I'm fully aware that I could swap them for something better but I'm not doing that. Just for having variety and fun.

N.I.C.K. nice points there. This is what one have to remember about the ETC exactly. The dark elf army is one of the few that can make an effective list that has very few extremely bad matchups, which makes it perfectly suited to tool a "denial" army. If the tournament was without any restrictions at all, most lists would still look like they do. 4 fliers, or a warlock bus (since that, too, can deny a ton of points, but is actually more risky due to unit-wipe spells). The dark elves have a specific job to do. Take the matchup that would be horrible for e.g. the ogre kingdoms bus, such that the OK player can get a 20-0 win and the dark elf can get a 10-10 draw, rather than the dark elf taking a 15-5 win and the OK losing 0-20. Just to put things to the extreme. The ETC general and army specific restrictions exist to make it more difficult to make a single go-to build. For example, if OK could, they would have their entire core selection (more or less) in one single irongut unit, because that would be ridiculously powerful. But theres a max on monstrous infantry in one unit, to try and tone such tendencies down a bit. Same with warlocks for dark elves, the power of a warlock bus is extreme compared to its cost. Whats a shame is that dark elves is one of the hardest comped races in this regard - many powerbuilds rely on steed masters, and so dark elves are indeed funneled into a single go-to.

But this is not the case with a few other armies. Dwarves can make gunlines in many different ways. Oh, they can also make close combat lists - but no serious dwarf would do this, because gunlines are better. Fault of ETC or fault of armybook? Dark elves power lies in its hero selection which is the single best entry. ETC lists trend is to max hero capacity. Fault of the restrictions, or is it because the armybook favours our heroes? In all cases its the latter. At the ETC, dark elves have a specific job in most cases. You tool your list for that job in your entire team. Hence the 4 pegasi.

With regards to magic restrictions in the ETC: I like these rules. If magic was uncomped, this is what would happen. Every army that can take lore of death would take lore of death. Some might even go double lvl 4 with both death, or one with shadow one with death, and strategies would be based on IF'ing the big unit wiper spells like purple sun and mindrazor. This would happen, and dont ever try to pretend it wouldnt. Maybe you, personally, would take something else because it is "just as competitive", but its just not. If you average over a thousand games each with different AB lores, lore of death would come out as the clear leader in points earned, with shadow coming in second due to mindrazor.

With regards to pushing ETC comp pack in singles tournaments: Yes, this clearly has issues. But not the kind of issues you think, because a singles tournament with ETC restrictions does not mean that every dark elf shows up with the flier list, every dwarf players hows up with the 7 fliers list and so on. Last time I held a singles tourney there was 3 wood elf players each with vastly different lists. The two ogre kingdom players both played busses, but lets be honest, which OK doesnt. The two lizardmen where also quite diverse. (Both had slanns, but you know...). I was the only dark elf and I played the fliers list and placed third because I got two great matchups and one horrific one. Had I gotten 3 okay matchups I would still have ended close to third with good play. Can the list win such an environment? As Nick pointed out, probably not, because it doesnt necessarily have the tools and power to get 3 big wins in a row regardless of opponent (which, in ETC you choose to some extent whereas at singles, its 'random'). So exactly in a ETC comped singles tournament, you WOULD see branching in army selection. Heck, I'm still waiting for my avatars of war witch elf standins, and when I get them I'll be playing the next tournament with either two towers style (probably omitting the shrine as I just dont think its worth its points) or a light council + WE horde. I also played a CoK bus at an ETC singles event, picking up a draw vs an empire, a big win vs chaos dwarves and a reasonably big loss vs a high elf death bus because he got turn 1. There is the 'randomness' of the matchups you get. The pegasus list is not the strongest list in terms of big win potential. Not by far. But it is the strongest list in terms of not losing. Twin towers can beat a whole lot of enemies, but consider facing an empire list with 3 cannons, ICK bus and demi unit. The cauldron and likely the shrine, too, is shot to pieces before you can get into combat, the ICKs will decimate the witch elves and the demis will theoretically draw up the executioners, assuming equal magic phases. Because he has the mobility advantage, he chooses the matchups and will likely get the charges. Thats the potential of a big loss for you right there.

Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather play with toned down magic. I was just trying to point out that this fact makes life much easier for single characters to hang out on their own, and thus it makes it much easier even in singles ETC tournament for your peg masters to survive. Which makes them even better. That was all.

I suspect the a big reason for the 4x Pegasus lists is because it is hard to lose really badly with them. There are a lot of mobile units that can be really hard to kill, allowing the players to preserve points. It is important in the ETC format to have a list that the team can throw out that has a good chance of playing even with just about anything, and the flyer list can fit the bill.

About the restricted magic. If seems I keep hearing how thibgs will be without comp... and yet I play with no comp and I haven't witnessed any of these things.

Shadow or Death are not the top lores and nobody's 6-dicing spells unless they're desperately in a pinch. Sometimes you can be desperate from the start if you see a death star you can't handle without a powerful spell, but man, with limited magic all you can do in this situation is build an avoidance list.

Dalamar, my experience is that even if the player has a good match up, if he has a mobile death caster he will try to 5-6 dice Purple Sun from turn 1, if that can destroy half of the enemy's army. I am taking in a tournament environment of course. So I do not agree with you there, 6 dice is not a last resource, it can be also, but it happen to be also the first resource many times. And losing a battle because someone was skillful enough as to roll double 6's… I do not like that honestly.

Then a question would be, why did you build a list that can lose to a skillful 6-diced spell?

One thing about these ETC druchii lists is that none are worried about 6 diced spells. Hell they should welcome them so the opponent has an opportunity to waste his dice.

You don't need more than 4 dice to cast a devastating purple sun... but if you want to throw 6 dice at it, go ahead.

How precisely does a dwarven army avoid losing to a 6-diced-Purple sun? How does a Nurgle Demon army? Ogre Kingdoms? Or Vampires? or Lizards? Or Chaos dwarves?

How exactly do we avoid losing to a massive dwellers, a 6-diced cacophonic choir or a dreaded 13th when casted on a unit with our characters?

There are spells that can decide a game in one turn. And on a competitive level, players will abuse this all the time.

In order to mitigate the effect of such spells, you can spread your points around a bit more. The big spells in the main rule book seem a purposeful attempt to discourage death star builds.

Dwarfs can have 3 scrolls, though 2 is optimal, 2 of which break spells.

Every other army can stop building freaking death stars and putting all eggs in one easy targeted basket.

I've never heard of a nurgle demon army or chaos dwarfs having trouble with purple sun. They have their own equally powerful magic.

Dwellers is easy. Its a pretty short ranged spell that's harder to cast than most #6 and scales in power with the size of the target unit. Generally having smaller units renders it useless. Same thing with the dreaded 13th.

Choir is short ranged and leaves the caster pretty exposed.

Of course you can't be prepared for every possible scenario unless you restrict player choices, that's the point.
Each issue has a solution, you just need to figure out what can hurt you the most and implement counters while accepting that some matchups will be harder than others.
