Can we have a dictionary please?

Post by Marjamhew »

It makes sense having English as the official language of this forum, but many posters have their rule books and army lists in their own language. This can lead to difficulties when translating specific items.

For example the 'Nachtherz' in German is not the 'Night heart' you might get from a translation website, but the 'Heart-Stone of Darkness'.

Of course, we cannot post rules, but a table or list of the names of items / spells / units / upgrades etc. would be a very useful reference on a worldwide website.

Opinions please.

I don't get it. You want a thing like an Item list that is both in english and in other languages?
That would create a mess in the forums. Imagine 500 persons, just 500, all of them posting, more than two thirds are probably from different countries so.. everyone would have to resort to the said Item Guide.
I say no. First, because it would be a massive work just for a small number of persons. Second, because eventually, everyone knows what the Heart-Stone of Darkness is ;)

Anaryin, I'm not sure whether you understood the suggestion - I believe it's purpose is to actually fight the mess. It's not indented to be able to call items, spells or rules in wahetever language one chooses, but to be sure that you know the proper (original!) English name even if you have read the rules only in your native language.

Good suggestion... It would be better to have a sticky with item names in all languages... I don't need it tho we don't have a army book in dutch :(

I was thinking of something like the FAQ, although hopefully people would read this!

Rather than having a whole load of random posts, which would be very chaotic, each language would have its own links to simple translations of units, spells an so on.

Once each list was started it could be updated with new items as we win them (hopefully!!) or new books appear.

The problem with expecting everyone to trawl through existing army lists to find the name of something, is that a poster may want to use a less popular item nobody else uses. And let's face it, there are plenty of items in the Dark Elves book, which don't get used very often.

Yep, in Holland and Belgium we don't have this problem since nobody bothers to translate the books and we just use them in English. I also recon the names would sound really weard in Dutch.
We will slay them and that is all.

There are armybooks in Russian, but it would be better if there wern't any... Someday I'm gonna collect all the crap from them and post their mistakes here (in English, with explanations...). So everyone who values his mental helath here buys english versions...

Actually, I don't think that this's necessary. Everyone who posts here, speaks English (some better, some worse). Why bother then? Such nachthertz problems can be solved on your local WH FB sites, I'm sure. The only dictionary I'd like to see here is English-Druch Eltharin =)))

IMO making such dictionary would be good, but I'm afraid if it would be easy to do so... I guess it would need teaming up - I don't think many of us have the books in more than one language.

Perhaps it would be even better to have it as one Sticky for every language?

And I think it is a good suggestion, because it could be very helpful for those people posting. Sometimes the translations are somehow funny. Come on, "lordling", what's that a funny word for?
;)
And is the lordling of the executioners actually called a lordling, too (because in German, he is called otherwise)?! Same with the lordling for the Corsairs...
It would make it very much easier being here.

Btw. I've seen something like that on the internet, concerning names and spells and things from the Harry Potter-books. It was quite fun to see what certain characters are called in different languages.
:)
But I can't remeber the site...

"Lordling" is the champ in warriors, Draich-Master is the champ for Execs, Reaver is the champ for Corsairs...

The suggestion is good, but I don't think Druchii.net should do the translations, that would be a job for GW. If they had a "dictionary" on their site or something everything would be fine. If we create a dictionary for all druchii items, spells, and units you would soon want to have the same in other races as well. If someone posts a list of translated words from the English book to german or italian or whatever languages GW has translated the book into, the mod of that forum might sticky it.

Amusing. The champion of your regular, spear-equiped warriors is called "Patrician," here in France.
But I digress. How about this: less talking, more work.
(Note that what I am about to do is totally useless, given that I must be the only French-speaking person in this forum to have the Army Book in French.)

Weapons
Hache du Bourreau - Executioner's Axe.
Epée Venimeuse - Venom Sword.
Lame de Destruction - Blade of Ruin. (And now, we understand why I failed to see what "Blade of Ruin" was, seeing as the French equivalent is "Blade of Destruction.")
Lame Hydre - Hydra Blade.
La Mort Pourpre - Crimson Death.
Arbalète Noire - Lifetaker. (Another example of misguiding translation: the French name signifies "Black Crossbow".)
Filet des Ténèbres - Web of Shadow.
Cherche-Coeur - Heartseeker.
Lame de Givre - Chill Blade.
Lame Noire - Dark Sword.

Armour
Armure d'Immortalité - Armour of Living Death.
Armure de la Servitude Eternelle - Armour of Eternal Servitude.
Bouclier de Ghrond - Shield of Ghrond.
Armure des Ténèbres - Armour of Darkness.
Armure de Sang - Blood Armour.

Talismans
Amulette Noire - Black Amulet.
Masque de Mort - Death Mask.
Couronne de Fer Noir - Crown of Black Iron.
Sceau de Ghrond - Seal of Ghrond.
Anneau d'Hotek - Ring of Hotek.

Enchanted Items
Coffret des Dimensions Infernales - Rubric of Dark Dimensions.
Anneaux des Ténèbres - Ring of Darkness.
Cristal de Minuit - Crystal of Midnight

Arcane Items
Pierre de l'Ame - Soulstone.
Bâton Noir - Black Staff.
Cape des Sombres Etoile - Darkstar Cloak.
Livre de Furion - Tome of Furion.

Standards, ToK, Albion and SoC another time, if this thread doesn't die.

Albion

Gantelet des Géants - Gauntlet of Power.

Oeil des Dieux - Divine Eye.

Sorry for the drop-feeding - I'll do SoC whenever I get my hands on the SoC CoP .pdf in French... :?

Edit: Anaryin - Danse of Doom is "Morathi's Dance of Fascination" in Spanish? How dare they associate our glorious temple with that slut-house they call a cult?! ;)
And what of the list in Portuguese, man?
