bandwidth

Post by Mr_piechee »

well how about we delet some posts... this is a php site so it not hard to just hav a number and when u make a post it adds one to that number..... y do we have to los post counts when a post gets deleted....

i hav posted this before but after losing the chat room i'l posting again....

before people asked for examples.... here are 2... both php sites.... newage.. go to the link in my sig... and 2nd... the iron maiden site.. both a post get deleted and nothing happens to ur post count....

*bit off topic but on the newage site there is a board with no rules.... its funny loads of rubbish is on it.. and instead of increasing post counts it decreases them... its funny... *

I was under the impression that if mods delete posts here, your postcount does drop.

As I understand it, the caht room takes up a lot of bandwidth. Conversely, even all the old posts take up very very little so as to be an insignificant factor when compared with other things.

It's only a good thing that your post count drops when a post is deleted. Sends a clear message: Spamming doesn't pay.

I'm for removing post count altogether but that's another issue.

Vorchild if u get rid on one post then ur right pt less... but get rid of 1000+ and its gd.... and thats what should be done... there a gd 10k of posts that han't been looked at in the last month... so they should go.... that way we can hav the chat thing bk...

We have mods to counter that, don't we?

Yeah, but most irrelevant posts are just removed without a warning so if they brought up your post count you would be much more eager to post to every topic even if you don't have anything to add to the conversation.

It doesn't work that way. Old posts don't soak up bandwidth. They soak up hard drive space. Even so, they are tiny little files. I'd wager that the album takes up ten times what the old post data does.

Bandwith is like a computer's RAM (Random Access Memory) memory. It is the "memory" that gets used when lots of things happen at once. Old posts are like the hard drive. Deleteing posts do not help bandwidth problems.

I find it a pity the chat is gone but as kitrik says there is another. we can still chat... and else just exchange msn :)

@bloodtemplar: I think the cool thing about a post count is that you have something to work up to..100posts= a name of your own... which is cool. you can't just give that to anyone and it is to cool to erase.

@kala: yeah I think so too...

Listen to Nagathi. He seems to have the tech. now-how sorted. And don't forget, the mods. are also the people responsible for keeping the site going.
I'm sure you'd prefer no chat to no site?

NK.
