I finally thought I'd try that chat option on the toolbar. The applet starts fine but then I get a "bad username" error. Is this because of the 's in my username? And if so, what can I do?

i can tell you why
the reason why is because IRC Doesn't allow names with Apostrophe's in them that is the problem, which is perhaps why the site should turn off member log in only cause it really $%^&S up users with apostrophes in their names.

Yes, the ' is not allowed in an IRC username. I'm not sure how far the chatbox allows you to get, but try typing /nick Shaaalaar when it give the error (I can't recreate the error without creating a whole new profile).

I would suggest getting hold of chatzilla (an extension for firefox) or mIRC which allows you to set up the name before you connect to a server (the full server name is irc.gamesurge.net).

ok, i've got chatzilla installed and it runs when I click on it.

what next? how do i connect to things?

(sorry to keep asking but I'm totally new to the chat arena)

The simple way in chatzilla is like this:

type

/server irc.gamesurge.net

You will see a tab appear with that, and you'll see some text scroll past in that tab.

Once that has stopped, type:

/join #dnetchat

Which will get you into the chatroom itself (If you want that chatroom to open every time you enter chatzilla, right click on the tab and select "open this channel at startup".

If you got to the chatzilla menu and click on "preferences" you can set up a permanent user name for yourself under "Global settings" -> General Tab and enter the info in indentification.
