Druchii.net suggestions for improvement

Currently D.net is bringing together all its coding boffins to update the site and refresh the user experience.

So what we'd like from you, the user, is to suggest any way you think the site could be improved for new and old alike.

At the moment we're just trying to get ideas and identify areas we can work on. We may not be able to implement all ideas that come our way, but the more we know the more we can improve the site.

Please post any suggestions in this thread :).

Reserved for when I am out of class and can actually type a full and thoughtful response BUT

The most important thing would be to just make sure it runs faster !!!!(of course this is why we are changing servers so that shouldnt be n issue)

Also, I always loved the different skins some sites let you choose from... Of dcourse i would never switch, to many memories!

There is one thing I like on asur.org, and that is the login dialog on a front page. Login into the site then only requires a single click.

Well, put a little fast foward button on the scrolling list of most recent posts. You could add more posts that way and it would mean you don't have to sit there in boredom.

the only one thing that I really want is to have an office-friendly version of the site: white background, black letters, no graphics (except the images inserted in the text), no emoticons in either the posts or the 'post reply' window.

@Lakissov: Haha! That's a really funny (and completely logical) suggestsion. I hadn't thought of it at all, instead I sit and alt-tab quickly whenever I think someone may be paying attention :P.

Agreed with the office friendly version, as at present quotes are clearer than the posts. I also struggle to keep logged in and have to sign in again each time I sign on (despite checking the box), this may have more to do with the work IT than d.net, but if it could be fixed as I am not sure if I can ask our IT dept.
Maybe if there could be some standardisation for images in posts. I know there are a number of methods of getting pics into posts at the moment but they end up all sorts of sizes and with the current speed issues it can take a little time to get through the painting and modelling section.

Maybe even a separate forum between druchii discussions and a new noob questions forum. I know there is a search function but often opponents will not agree to a forum resolution to a discussion unless they see the specific situation covered. If there could be somewhere where these seemingly obvious rules questions could be asked without risking the wrath of people telling one to use the search function or not respond as they have seen the question so many times.

EDIT; I also find the pop-up drop downs on the top slightly frustrating as I usually navigate backwards using the tree below them and it can occasionally be a little trick for someone as ham fisted as me.

If you need an additional code monkey, let me know. I have a bit of CMS/PHP experience (although when it comes to WebApps my forte` is more along the lines of ActionScript) and I'm well-versed in taking mockups and realising them with CSS.

Just throwing it out there.

Suggestions will follow after a day or 2 of thinking.

I'd like to see the time being able to be changed by each person to what they want. I personelly live in australia and its very confusing when I get a dead line on some things.

A free pancake every time you log in?

Ahem...

I like where demendred is going with this but perhaps...
maybe a time for each country.

I know there are a lot of different places where people live on this site but I mean the msot relevant countries. (Don't think Im saying one country (or continent) is better than the other. Just the most normal ones like the U.K, Australia, Europe and so on and so forth)

As in the time listed for each post, or something different?

like on proboards how on your profile you select your time zone and it shows you all times in the one you selected instead.

So... the rest of the world is not normal/relevant? :p

We don't need to include all the countries, simply provide a way to specify an offset from GMT. Finding out which timezone you're in shouldn't be that difficult. We take a standard formatted string, convert to some time unit, and add/subtract as needed from each time we give. Shouldn't be difficult.

You can set your time zone in your profile (It's near the bottom). I expect that would achieve what you're looking for.

I would like a "go to last read post in thread" option

Sometimes its hard to find where you left off on some of the faster moving topics.

Also a way of inserting a table into a post. It would be great to be able to present stats without having to mess around with the code function.

Just a couple of ideas, whether they are possible or practical is another matter.

Venkh, that (first unread post) should be achievable with this button:

That's to the left of the thread title.

I think that's what you're looking for.

I'll try it. Thanks!

firefox is useful with little things like that. when your frustrated with slow loadings you can do that to speed things up a little!

anyway, back to the topic. firstly i would like to see my private messages in a little box when i log in. although i've now set it to send me an e-mail when i get one, before i would miss things the mods tell me cause i didn't check my pm's enough. i'm sure the mods have seen this allot. having a little box on login showing this would solve so many problems.
and i would like to see lots of heavy css styling. this will then mean its easy to have a function in options to change the layout, and for users to make there own layouts (should we be allowed to upload them). this could also sort out the 'office friendly' version of the site should users not want to download/use firefox.

Make sure you allow D.net through your pop-up blocker and set 'Pop up window on new Private Message' to Yes. That would go some way to solving that problem.

I do see what you mean, though.

Maybe he prefers Konqueror ;-)

Anyway, back to topic. I personally block the pop-up PM telling window, but some other, less intrusive, notification of PMs after login would be nice. Like a line below the welcome message, saying: "You have 2.71828182846... private messages" with a link.

And ability to insert tables would also help.
