A 9'' moving, 18 marching slann mage priest would be very hard do catch! It wouldn't even be necessary to risk a whole battalion to protect him...
This could work on very fast and skirmishing Lizzie armies...

He's better off without an entourage but with the "cupped hands of the old ones" (I think that's the one?) where he gets a 2+/4+ ward save. Since Slann is on big chair not foot,

Just keep him on his own, and protect him well, in most games he will survive and cause an enormous amount of carnage. I personally give him the Plague of Tepok and Plaque of Dominion.
Army Builder allows it...but then again, it's known to have errors too...
