I remember when I first started visiting Coventry Games Workshop regularly and how I was viewed as a newb because I was new there. After a game where I massacred a Bretonnian Army with my Chaos Marauder Horde, people started paying attention. I also made a small circle of friends there who I'll give a grudge match too every once in a while, as well as giving anyone around a game if they want to have some fun, brush up or start learning the game.

Ah, the joys of suffering elitism...

I suppose... However, I find that the problem can be not so much that people are treating noobs like non-entities, but that GW's attitude can be amazingly patronising, sometimes particularly to older gamers-I mean, Veteran's night is every Tue. and you can't play any of the Specialist Games at all, despite the fact that one of the guys I met there knows at least 11 people who play one or more of Blood Bowl, Warmaster, BFG or Epic! And, as such, that exacerbates my problem, that being that I refuse to play if I can't be reasonably certain of an opponent on a certain evening- I mean, they're GW games, for Chrissakes, just let people play them if the want! I mean, Blood Bowl takes approx. the same time as a 1,000pt 40K battle, only with much less models and less room taken up! Give up 1 6'x4' table, and you can accomodate A MINIMUM of 3(THREE), Blood Bowl games!

Dan caused that?! As in overweight, crew-cut Dan?! By Sigmar, if I ever get my hands on him, I'M GONNA KILL HIM! And not on Nuffle's holy girdiron!

Dalamar wrote:My local GW store doesn't ban specialist games, not sure why your does Arquinsiel... There was a bunch of people playing Blood Bowl last evening and I'm pretty sure I'd be able to start a game of Mordheim if I found an opponent.

I don't know if you get it, but the "Nob" jokes from Gorkamorka refer both to Ork Nobs and a certain part of the human anatomy.....?

Right, that's it! Dan's definitely going to pay! I wonder if Paul would allow Blood Bowl and/or BFG to run again?-Dan opens his mouth, give 'im a 10-min time-out(as in out of the store!)!?!

I have played 2 different 500pt games in the last month against new players and recruited my friends as well. Also the store that I game at has a really nice staff. The first time I went in to check it out they offered me a demo game of something (Tide of Iron I think) and also the next couple times I was invited to try AT - 43 and a WWII skirmish scenario. It's a really friendly environment and it makes the hobby a lot more enjoyable.

I'm willing to assume he is talking about a GW store in which they currently refuse to support specialist games that they no longer produce. IE gorkamorka, inquisitor etc

How old were those guys? And how often did they make those jokes? Everytime someone got into a discussion or cracked a joke about Slanneshe's unushual biolgy and fetures, the staff (namely the manager) would tell us to shut up.

I was actually one of those people at first. I played Mage Knight when it first came out. So from that game I switched over to WFB and the people who played warhammer knew me. I was a brat, about 14 or 15 and didn't really have much common sense about other people's oppinions. Some of the veteran locals wouldn't play me, and now they all quit playing warhammer except for me and a buddy of mine. It sucks, the Warhammer population decreased big time around me and I only got better, and aquired more armies. I go to GTs all the time now, and won a best general award last year. None of the guys who used to play at my local store ever did that.
On the flip side. I play hard armies, and I play fast. I don't like playing new people because of me, not because I don't like playing newbies, it's because I play hard armies, and play fast and when forget a ruling or something I use it to my advantage (I'm not a prick about it). I just think I'm one of the worst players to get someone into warhammer. I play to have fun and to win. I have fun playing against challanging opponents and hard armies. So I do the same. I'm not very good at showing mercy, even to new players. It's built into my genetics to not make mistakes on purpose.

I do want to play AT-43 just because of the space monkeys!
Also another game that would be hard to do a friendly demo for would be hordes/warmachine. I play hordes (circle), and that game is pure cheese, cut throat fun. Everything is cheesy, so it's all balanced.

well i play with noobs and similar to you i field nasty lists designed to win. So when playing with a noob, i dont deliberately make mistakes, i just explain why i am making every move that i do and suggest things for him (explaining my reasoning along the way). It works quite well so even when i annihilate him - which happens quite a lot - they have still hopefully learnt from the experience and i commiserate them and prehaps challenge them to play again sometime.

If you dont have the patience for that fine; but some of my most fun games have been where i just kicked back and had some fun with a new guy.

Last week, we had a guy who wanted to get into warhammer, so we invited him over for a 40k game we were having on saturday. Afterwards, we gave him an army to play with and played a small 500 point game against him. I played space marines and decided not to make a super hard list. I also tried my best to split my fire halfway between him and the other player. Basically, I played to win (which I did), but I also didn't try to smash his face in.
