Looking up from the fire, Haiku examined the faces and expressions of each of the talkers. Nothing obvious was shown at first but sooner or later the anger and frustration could be seen amongst the faces.

Standing up, and with a slight stutter, Haiku said.

"We should definitely not condemn our Magic users. You may not know it but we have need of them for now. Right now, our enemies close in upon us, waiting intill the right time to strike. But with our magic users, we may use their powers to at least give some of us some protection from the saboteurs. This means we can keep more of us alive so we can figure out who are the traitors." stated Haiku, shooing a fly away from his wound.

"As for the Portal within the amulet. Wouldn't it be a case of uttering a few words to open the portal?" asked Haiku, sitting down and looking into the fire.

"I cannot cast my vote yet for I see no evidence before me, apart from random voting which I cannot say I hold a great appeal for." finished Haiku.

"So votes have already started to fly, eh? I think it's a bit hasty to use a dice to determine the infiltrators. What if the roll would point to yourself, Ashnari?"

Belcar connected his fingertips again to form his basic look of threatening glare and thoughtful manners.

"I think also that random vote in general is a bad way to weed the saboteurs, and we will propably manage to send an innocent soul- as innocent as a Druchii can be- to Khaine's kingdom. But, that way, we manage to make the group smaller, making it easier to find the saboteurs.

Thus: I vote for Lord Anubis."

"What if the dice had of landed on you Belcar? Perhaps me? I don't know. But I know that just following up with random voting is incompetent as making deals with the Asur.
I believe we should follow up on the people who have not given much to this council or who are attempting to cause trouble and confusion by spreading the influence of random voting, sending our magic users to the blade and/or giving accounts of their lives which shed absolutely no light on our current situation." finished Haiku, glancing towards Soupman.

Tarbo scratched the back of his head while looking over what the expedition managed to salvage from the wreckage. Water was still plentiful, luckily, but they'd have to ration on food. Or eat the local wildlife. His thoughts shot back to the five-legged lizards. Yuck.

Most people were asleep. Mioralynthia was overseeing the meeting with the officers/suspects/volunteers. Kevlamin had set up a temporary pen for the surviving Cold Ones with a bunch of crates and some shiny objects to draw their attention (they were out of frog legs for some obscure reason).

Tarbo took a look at his surroundings. Flat plains as far as the eye could see. Not a single bump in terrain, not a single hill, not even a speck of vegetation, just an unnaturally big, flat lump of snow and ice. The sky was clear, filled with stars and a moon, all casting their light onto the floor.

“Goodevening, sir,” Anleth greeted him when she sat down on a crate. “I have about as much a corner for questioning as I can summon on short notice.”

“Really? I had the impression you already snagged someone, what with this whine ringing in my ear.”

“That would be Captain Darts, sir, bemoaning the loss of his ship.”

“Oh, right. How is he?”

“In his own words: meaningless, restless, and hopelessly depressing.”

“Right.” Tarbo pulled his chin in thought for a moment, then lifted his shoulders. “Nothing we can do about that. Do me a favour, see if Lynthia needs any help.”

“I'm on it.”

°°°

Despite the barrage of slander aimed at Jane Magic User, Mioralynthia keeps silent, absorbed by her lecture and focused on finding something—anything—to aid this expedition. Her eyes are drawn when a rather uncommon frog leg skedaddled on its own, and she stares in its direction a while longer, but then settles back on her book.

Anleth silently joints the group, walking up to Mioralynthia to report on progress. They share a few phrases, almost whispers, but that comes to an abrupt end when the elf who introduces himself as 'Soupman' speaks up. An elf who was not invited.

“Who are you?” Mioralynthia asks, but she doesn't wait for an answer. “Captain, remove this man. If he doesn't comply, do whatever it takes so he sees the error in his ways.”

Anleth bows symbolically, a lopsided smile on her lips, and escorts the elf away from the meeting.

Aenarin, who was musing within his own thoughts for a while suddenly spoke up, "Here's a good question, what if that diceroll wasn't so random as we thought it was, what if it took more than one person to infiltrate the Ark, what if all the saboteurs know who the others are and thus a random vote would help them quite tremendously, they would "randomly" get more and more innocent druchii killed as they hid behind their lies. That is all I must say for now and my vote for Ashnari Doomsong still stands."

"What if we dwell too much on dice? Really, stranded in the chaos wastes, traitors among us, and we discuss whether the die was loaded..."
At this point, Belial laughed shortly.
"What a great jury we are..."

"You're still sounding very suspicous in my book Belial, I have no evidence for now, but watch your step, I'm watching. At this point the die means everything in a world where most things can be magically influenced. Especially if the lives of those that may help our investigation are at stake do you not care?" Personally, Aenarin didn't care either, but their lives were a great bargaining chip.

Belial shrugged... This was getting ridicollous...

"So, you place suspicion on me, on tha basis that I seem to be the only one not overreacting over a die? What, if he had just named one by random, you would suspect his voice as well? I actually don't care whether the die was loaded or not - a death should soon enough speed up the process of finding the traitors..."

Belial looked Aenarin in the eyes, and smiled, not threateningly, but humorous.

"Come on man... Don't you think you are a bit too paranoid? Don't you think you should hold off on the threats now? Unless you are spoiling for a fight, of course..."

A quiate chuckle emenated from the shadowed alcove
"If die are all that are needed to solve this crissis then I am sure that the Corsairs can provide us with all we need. However I will adress those who riducule my sugestions. Yes we are a magical race but note that it takes ability to manipulate the winds to cast a spell. And Hiku I say nothing about condeming our magic users and frankly we canot actulay imprision them as they could turn us to dust with a thought however they can be gatherd and they can be watched so that those sorcceresses that are loyal can deal with any that act suspicously. I ask again of Morialynthia, how much magicical skill, talent and knowledge would it take to operate such an amulet.

“That's Mistress Mioralynthia, officer. I do not sit with you as equals.” Her eyes settle on Zaniev for a while, making sure her gaze matches ambient temperature. Still, she answers his question: “As for the amulet, the trigger was likely from whatever sentient daemon headed the horde that invaded our ark. There are enough spurious vortices of magic tunneling through these plains to sustain the portal once it was created.

“We're not looking for who triggered it; we're looking for who brought it on board. And it does not require magical skill, talent, or knowledge to bring on board.”

"Thank you Mioralynthia." Zaniez deliberatly did not use any honorific "that clears matters up considerably and makes imprissioning or watching magic users unessasary. Unless you your self are the culprit."

Belial shook his head, his fine white hair gently falling in front of his face. Brushing it away, he spoke:

"If some of you don't apporve of the methods some of us employ, that is your problem. I can make up a reason if you want one, but really, if we start making rules for how we may vote, then we have helped the traitor, or traitors, a great deal on their way. My vote still stands. We need to move, we need something to talk about, so that we may indetify our culprit throught the only way available to us: conversation."

"Aye, for it is by knowing thy enemy that fire becomes a tool. Um."
Ashnari looked puzzled for a moment.
"Anyway, I have acted, I have created discussion through which our enemies may reveal themselves. I have even helped people vote for me!"
He smiled happily.
"Now, as for why I would not vote for myself, I obviously wouldn't want to commit suicide. And besides, it wouldn't be very provoking or inducting to conversation and discussion, now would it. Obviously, I have no reasoning for this beyond self-preservation, and the claim that I was here first. So, shoo with you! No more 'random' voting for me. I thought of it first, so by all rights I have the first pickings. First random pickings, that is."
He cleared his throat before forgetting what he was going to say and sitting down.

There was no response to Zaniev. Mioralynthia had better uses of her time than teaching proper protocol and respect. He would learn his place sooner or later.

“It are the votes that matter in the end, Katash, regardless of what drives people to cast them. You can plead to your peers to change their minds, but everyone's vote carries the same weight, regardless of the reason with which it was cast.

“So to answer your question: I can not and will not disregard votes. It is each one's responsibility to cast them with thought.”

Sleek’s eyes skipped left and right. Talk about renegade sorceresses, geometrically improper dice and the votes resulting from that…oh and frog legs out to pioneering the wastes. And this was just the first few hours after they had managed to crash-land a floating city on absolutely nothing at all. No doubt it took skill to do that and a horde of raging demons but according to G.W. (better known as George Wally) arks were infected with those already. He probably talked about the domesticated kind.

“If you’d allow me to tag in here”, Sleek said, “I believe Ashnari’s decision – as semi-random as it may be – did do what we were all waiting for to happen: give us a topic which we could discuss and with that, come closer to find those in favour of gravity.” Sleek thumbed over his shoulder towards the still-burning ark.

“For example, we found Aenarin to be very much against the idea of random voting. Is that because he’s afraid to be next? Or is it because he knows Lord Anubis to be innocent and hopes that, in defending him, he will earn a place amongst those secure against voting?”

“And what about Belial? Perhaps he’s just so happy not to be picked out by the outlandish dice he merrily slapped on his vote on anyone but his own back. Perhaps he’s just looking for a kill. Or perhaps he’s just trying to get things done.”

“Whatever the case may be for or against either Aenarin or Belial, at least they had the guts to put their money where their mouth is, which is more than I can say for those skulking shades who have trouble reading numbers on slightly esoteric dice.”

“In the current state of affairs, I’m torn between several prospects to place my vote on although Lord Anubis is relatively safe from me. Ashnari’s move handed better suspects than semi-random ones even if it isn’t by much at all. For the moment, I’m finding Aenarin the most interesting so there is where I will place my vote for the moment. Just to put my money where my mouth is.”

Vote: Aenarin

"Sleek to clarify, I personally believe that the only ones who know without a shadow of a doubt who the instigators are, are the instigators themselves, therefore if one of them were to suggest such a "random" vote then they would only be furthering their own plans. For how could anyone know that they were a traitor? They wouldn't know thats how."

"And there you've got the reason why it's random, dear friend. You are a bit under pressure it seems, since you have trouble grasping the meaning of the word."

Belial smiled again, mocking Aenarin.

"And now, Sleek has presented us with the first chain of real logic thought, thanks to the talk spawned by Ashnari's dice. You Aenarin, is now marking yourself out, fending for yourself. I, again, have no real evidence, but I did promise i would change my vote when a more likely suspect appereared, and Sleek has me convinced.

"Hmm, and you would not fend for yourself? How did you react when I challenged you not long ago? You defended yourself well, what would you have me do? Bow down to Sleek's vote? The greatest motivator it seems in this group is self-preservation as spoken by Ashnari. If you want you may execute me but in doing so you would doom yourself."

Silas looked up she had been quietly listening to the conversation now she joined in.
"random voting is not the best way of discovering the enemy however it can be used to make people talk we may need to remember this later if some of us do not talk today there is very little chance of us caching the enemy those that mean we should stay silent.
"no we should discuses every little detail in the hope that the enemy will let something slip".

"If I was an infiltrator, I would take the first opportunity I got to send an innocent to interrogation while keeping my head down and avoiding attention. Wanting to seem innocent, I would let you know that I think sending a probably innocent Druchii to interrogation and torture is ruthless and hasty. Nevertheless I would make my vote send someone to interrogation as fast as possible"

"Na, the infiltrators are going to prance about while they shout out their guiltiness. Now listen up everyone. This job the infiltrators just pulled couldn't of been done alone. It would require more than one person. One to carry the amulet, one to spread confusion amongst the ranks intill the portal was opened, though I'm not completely sure how many more people they would need for this job." mused Haiku.

Looking around the group, Haiku looked towards the sky and flinched at the disturbing skies.
Looking towards Ashnari, Haiku continued.
"You say no more random voting for you, ey Ashnari? Then I expect nothing less from you. But if you go one inch from the straight, we shall know."

Looking towards Aenarin.
"You say that he is defending himself well, though I think you should be concentrating more on your own skin for the moment. You say 'we may execute you', so are you inviting yourself to Mistress Mioralynthia over there and her sword? If so, I believe we should help you there if you are so confident with your innocence." finished Haiku, his features blank and simple.
