V's arms felt heavy with fatigue, and it was with the greatest effort that she continued her flaming barrage against the rodent-Daemon. It seemed like all the bolts in Naggaroth would not stop this blasted thing, and yet Rhamek stepped up to face it. His men died one by one, messily and painfully, having Vryala cringe at the thought of Saldrimek.

The smaller rats assailed them yet, but soon enough a deep rumble shook the earth - it was that blasted Corsair wizard again, now wielding an instrument of dubious origin. V was baffled; the vermin all fled in fear. Except the big one, of course, which seemed yet even more enraged. She looked around. Headstrong Rhamek lay dying, pieces of his crew scattered about. And now that accursed monstrosity leveled its weapon straight at Caraoc. V had no love for Corsairs, nor bards, but realized he might well hold the key to defeating this thing.

There was but one path to take. K was already on it; Vryala would stand by her side.

Does whatever possible to keep the Verminlord away from Caraoc. Flame on!

Casaythe watched as the celebrated captain, Rhamek fell. His chest crushed within his armour as the verminlord lunged with deadly precision. The two remaining Midnight Guards fought like ravenous manticores to avenge their master. It wasn't looking good.

Still, the plague of rats was avoiding him, and he had no idea why. Doing all he could to keep them back, his efforts were futile. There were just too many.

Suddenly, the sound of a horn being blown made him look up. Caraoc! What was he doing?

The rats and verminlord paused, and Casaythe wondered if his friend had managed to find a weakness in the foul daemon. The rats scurried away as suddenly as they had appeared; running into any cracks they could find. And the daemon just... stood there. Had he been stunned? Just as his hope was raised, it was dashed. The monster now enraged, charged at the stormsinger. Casaythe couldn't just stand there and leave his friend to be pulped by the doomglaive.

Caraoc saw what was coming and actually did something sensible for once. He ran. If only the same could be said for Casaythe.

'Oi! You stinking great arse nugget!'

He raced after the monster, his glaive held forwards.

Casaythe is trying to defend Caraoc's escape and buy the group some time. He will try to cut the verminlord's hamstrings from behind, and cripple the creature so the others can pile in and attack. That's if he isn't killed first! If the daemon turns its attention and tries to attack him, he will run the other way to split the monster's attention.

Elysian's bolts proved every bit as ineffective as he had feared and the halberds of the midnight guards seemed to do little better. One by one the powerful warriors fell as would all those who sought to take on such creatures on their own terms. It was like boxing with a bear, an elf might be quicker but it didn't actually matter how many blows you landed when the opponent was twice your size. That said he was bereft of a better idea himself, and then the horn blast came. Here at least was something that seemed to have an effect, banishing the magically summoned swarm and enraging their master. As the rat lord thundered towards the singer Elysian realised that they now had an advantage, if played right they might be able to lead the Verminlord wherever they wanted. The question was where? If the situation was different the temple might have been an idea or the convent but the lion’s share of the cities warriors were already embroiled in the fight, they didn't need a greater daemon to deal with as well.

For now the corsair with the horn was opting for simple safety and was heading towards a building, remembering how that huge axe could cut through rock Elysian thought it a flimsy refuge but there were not many choices. It appeared that the remaining warriors were trying to save their new asset, the thief decided he should too. Unfortunately the Verminlord barely seemed to feel his bolts, wary as he was of attracting the attention of the remaining Midnight guards Elysian decided to try and spice up the next batch a little. He was under no illusions as to his ability to kill the fiend, but enchanted bolts might make it sit up and take notice. It was worth a try at least.

Elysian will put a subtle enchantment with Chamon on his next clip (reloading) which he will then fire all at once at the Verminlord. This enchantment is to be as unflashy as possible so as hopefully to avoid notice.

Caraoc had managed to carve a horn of solid Daemon bone, and it proved it's arcane might when he sounded it, scaring the lesser vermin away, and even causing a few horses on nearby streets to whine in fear loud enough for them to hear once the horn blast ended. All it did to the Verminlord itself however was enrage it further, however causing the Daemon to go into an unthinking frenzy, while dangerous, could prove more effective than letting it use it's cruel intelligence as well as it's sheer size and arcane power. When it turned on Caraoc however, all he could think of doing was to run. He turned and started to sprint back in the direction of the half collapsed building some way back up the road, still looking to the skies and hoping they would answer his call, but foreseeing no immediate aid from the heavens as he fled.

The Verminlord however would catch him long before he reached the building, moving into a leaping charge that would see the Astromancer caught were it not for the intervention of those that stood between them. Karonath, Fiat, Vryala, Casaythe and even Elysian stood their ground and did their best to hold the Daemon back, as Phalx dived off to one side, deciding that he would not risk his life for who was basically a stranger. This quick burst of motion caught the Verminlords eye however, and it slowed it's rage fuelled run ever so slightly and glanced at him as he ran aside. This small distraction gave the rest of the group the moment they needed to strike without facing the immediate retaliation of the Greater Daemon.

Elysian whispered an enchantment softly to his handbow as he pointed it at the Verminlords wounded chest as it loomed above him, and loosed an entire clip of bolts into the Daemon. Vryala hurled the last of her fire bombs as the creature moved into close range, watching as they arced over her charging comrades and exploded in the Daemons' face even as it was peppered with Elysians' bolts, almost all of which this time got through the ward that shimmered around it. The explosion that followed knocked the Daemon back on it's heels, and Caraoc realised the pursuit had ended and turned back around some twenty yards behind the others, just in time to see as the Midnight Guardians caught up behind the Verminlord, and Fiat, Casaythe and Karonath together slammed into it from the front.

The Verminlord swept it's glaive out at the oncoming attackers, but the blast and blinded it and knocked it off balance, and the sweep was wild and sailed straight over their heads. Karonath reached the Daemon first, and cried out with battle joy as she sliced her magical Draich cleanly across it's already wounded chest, tearing open the hole Saldrimeks' axe had left in the Daemons body. The Verminlord howled, and swept it's free claw down to grab the Khainite just as Casaythe rolled under it's bulk and chopped his glaive as hard as he could into one hamstring, then spinning in a crouch to deliver another such blow to the other. As he did so, the Midnight Guardians hacked their halberds into the sides of the Daemon again, and Karonath avoided being snatched from the ground with combat agility only a trained Khainite could muster. Fiat was right behind K, and chopped his halberd into the Daemons' grasping hand, causing it to wrench it's hand away and let out another deep, chittering roar.

As the Daemon pulled it's hand away, it tore Fiats' halberd from his grip and sent it spinning up into the air, something Caraoc saw as a series of flashes of glinting light as the light of distant fires and the newly risen moons reflected off it's edges. The portent he saw in the pattern of the glittering light, which reminded him somewhat of the stars as seen from sea, told him something very bad was about to happen, but he had no time to warn anyone in the midst of combat. The Verminlord swept it's massive glaive about as Karonath cut it again and again, Fiat now unarmed and just trying to avoid it's stomping feet. Casaythe was caught by the iron triangle on the back of it's glaive haft as it turned, and the blow sent him hurtling ten feet backwards across the snow until he hit a crate which exploded in a shower of splintered wood.

Casaythe was out of the fight, even as the Verminlord crashed to it's knees where he had severed the tendons in it's ankles with his glaive. Blood ran down his nose from where the haft of the Doom Glaive had struck him, but he was fortunate it was not the warpstone blade of the weapon. One of the two remaining Midnight Guardians was not so lucky, and was caught as the Verminlord lashed out with a backhand slash that cut the man clean in two, each half being reduced to a pile of crumpled armour and steaming gore. As the Verminlord went down, black ichor now running out of it's ruined chest cavity in a tide, Karonath danced around it's grasping hand and struck again, this time cutting down through one of it's glaring red eyes just below it's missing horn. The Verminlord bared it's teeth viciously, and lunged out with it's huge weapon so quickly that this time not even the Khainite had time to see it coming and move aside...

Fiat barged into Karonath from the side, the twice-born Warrior moving with speed that defied even Druchii swiftness, a speed not born of any training or simple battle instinct. It was said by some that the only things that could move faster than an elf were the dreaded Vampires, and the Daemons of the Chaos deity Slaanesh. They all knew Fiat was no Vampire, but the group knew he wore a helmet that had once belonged in the trophy room of such a terrible creature, and remembered that the helmet itself was an icon of Slaanesh. Karonath didn't see him coming, and simply hit the ground with a thud that her mind momentarily told her was the impact of the Doom Glaive through her chest. Before her mind could register the fact that the blow had come from the side, she realised she was on her back on the ground, and was looking up at Fiat.

The Warrior stood where she had been standing, three feet of glowing green metal protruding from the back of his armour, the tip of the hissing, steaming, awful chaos weapon dripping red with blood. Fiat looked down and slowly raised his hands, clasping them on the hilt of the giant weapon where it protruded in front of him, a full two foot of the unnatural blade inside his chest, warping and burning his flesh with every moment. The Helmet of Purity, once known as the Helmet of Slaanesh, pulsed a brilliant silver-pink as it's complex ward tried to combat the magic weapon, but as the group looked on in horror they could see that it was already too late. The Greater Daemon leaned forwards on it's weapon, driving Fiat to his knees with a gurgling moan, even as the blade pushed further through his body with the motion. Then, the ward in the magical helmet and the dark magic in the blade could take no more of one another, and both of them exploded in the same instant, a blinding flash of darkness and of light.

Fiat was utterly lost in the arcane explosion, dying even as the blast tore his body into a thousand tiny fragments. The last Midnight Guardian too was too close to the pair as their arcane gifts collided, and was blasted from his feet never to be seen again. The shockwave that blasted outwards was strong enough to knock Vryala, Elysian, Phalx and even the onlooking Caraoc from their feet. Casaythe and Karonath, already laying on the ground where they had fallen, were buffeted with a magical hailstorm that was the tiny fragments of both the magical helmet and the magical glaive. The microscopic shards stung their flesh, burning and freezing all at the same time, but even through the sparkling haze they all saw what happened next. The Verminlord had been utterly undone by the blast, it's weapon exploding before it and blowing out straight through it's ruptured chest.

The last they heard of the foul Greater Daemon was an outstretched cry of apparent terror as the wards holding it to the realm of the living collapsed, and it's corporeal form was destroyed, leaving no trace but for the horn.

The others stood their ground in the face of the horror, for the life of a stranger, a horn blowing mad man. The rest stood strong though, Phalx couldn't believe it. They had never been this foolish, well not recently. He regretted it a moment after. The fast Shade had caught the Demons eye, his black cloak streaming behind him.

His comrades wild charge succeeded, thanks to his distraction clearly. They dodged its wild missed placed swing, the horrid green glowing glaive still leaving a wicked trail. Phalx was impressed by his allies, as he made to raise Deathspitter. The second swing would kill. Then their was Fiat.

What was the crazy bastard doing? You bloody fool Phalx hissed, as the horrid glaive slew the warrior, returned from the grave. His helm glew and shone, working against the horrid magics, to save the warrior, the twice born.

To no avail. He was thrown by the explosion, it was over. He got to his feet, the beast was dead,Fiat was gone again. You friggin stupid bastard! Virkarh was no place for heroics, and Fiat had shown why. Tired beyond belief, battered and bloody, was the battle even over? Phalx got to his feet, and thought of one thing. Did Rhamek have anything interesting on him?

Phalx will quickly and sneakily loot Rhamek's corpse. The he will join his bloody and battered comrades.

As the aura of the Daemon decreased, Caraoc realized that he was no longer being chased after. Did anyone interpose?
Looking at the end of the street, he could see that the giant rat was kneeling on the ground, surrounded by daring elfs.
The group had finally overcome its terror and started fighting the greatest danger.
During the fight that followed, stellar lights told Caraoc about a bad omen: sorrow and mourning were expected very soon.
No time to warn anyone, a blast of pure arcane explosion half blinded Caraoc and knocked him from his feet.
The last that was heard of the foul Greater Daemon was an outstretched cry of apparent terror.
When the echoes faded, Caraoc’s arcane senses felt that the Daemon was gone.

As a feeling of alleviation diffused in his mind, Caraoc could feel a deep exhaustion invading his whole body.
Still, at his side, the horn remained, a solid proof of the nightmare that they just had experienced.

-=-=-

Recipe for a magic horn.
During a full moon night with a magic storm,
Cut half of the horn of a Greater Daemon with a load of warpstone hit by a lightning,
Carve and enchant the horn while the Daemon is kept in vicinity by the finest warriors available,
Then try the horn on its former owner, and sacrifice him along with three more souls.

-=-=-

No time for recipes. Shayla might come at any moment and discover him in an awkward position.
Caraoc stood up and walked to the scene of the last battle.
He called out loud:
"Casaythe, are you all right?"
Phalx had been shouting and was now searching on the ground. At least another survivor.
"Hey, Phalx, what about Elysian, Vryala, Karonath and Fiat? Any news of Saldrimek? Where are Rhamek and his guards?"

Body count.

As the Verminlord came onward V saw Phalx skitter away, much alike to the rats they'd all been fighting, yet the Daemon's senses were keen enough to pick up the movement and investigate. Once more, the rest of the group unleashed hell. Cleaving blades followed fiery blasts followed enchanted bolts in turn, yet through all the carnage the Rat King still stood tall. Seeing K leap in for the kill, V's heart surged with both concern and battle-lust - then turning into outright horror as she saw the Glaive come down.

Fiat had intercepted the weapon with his very body, saving Karonath from certain death. The sight of it was horrendous. Somehow, the cursed warrior lived yet, the forces of his headgear casting arcane pulses of light as they strained to overcome the blade's unholy corruption. Even without mage sight, she could tell it was a close battle, ultimately culminating in an explosion that sent them all sprawling... save Fiat and the Verminlord itself, both utterly undone.

V had seen her old comrade die before, but whatever pact he had made in Hell she knew there was simply no coming back from this. Almost trance-like, Vryala solemnly bowed her head, mumbling a prayer of vengeance. Before long, however, Phalx' wailing caught up to her, and brought her back to the here and now - their part was done at this time, leaving only the bitter aftermath to be dealt with. Provided there was enough left of him to recover, Saldrimek warranted a proper burial; much like the Drach would have the remains of loyal Rhamek cared for.

We have a duty to the dead...

The blow to the head threw him backwards, and for a moment he lay there, blackness and silence filling his mind. "Is this what it feels like to die?" Slowly, clarity began to return, the noises of a fight seeping into his head, and gingerly he opened his eyes.

He hurt. He tasted blood, his own blood. Cautiously he raised a hand to his face, noting from his bloody fingers that his nose and mouth were bleeding. His head pounded, and his body ached. He hadn't felt this bad since he was kicked in the head by a certain highborn's nauglir. "Get up... move..." he urged himself. The battle was still raging against the daemon and unless he acted quickly...

Propping himself up on his left elbow, he scanned the street with squinted eyes at the very moment Fiat shoved Karonath out of harm's way and was rewarded for his valour by a doomglaive through his chest. Casaythe saw his body jolt as the blade punched through his back. He watched the struggle as the Druchii held the haft of the weapon, blood pouring out of the exit wound. And then his helmet began to glow. In moments, it and the glaive exploded, spraying the street in shards and a rain of meat. A dusting of magical shards flew outwards, carried by the blast, stinging Casaythe's skin. He closed his eyes and raised an arm to protect himself.

Opening his eyes slowly, Casaythe could only stare, wide-eyed and stunned at the death of Karonath. As he was about to give in to dispair, he realised too that the daemon had been undone. Karonath had not died in vain.

The corsair exhaled and let himself flop back to the street, his head thudding against the cobbles. "Shouldn't have done that..." he thought, as the knock sent fresh stars swimming in his vision. He checked his nose, and his mouth with a hand, happy that no serious damage had been done. He knew he would have a couple of black eyes for a week though...

As the void from the fight settled, the sounds of his companions echoed softly around him. Phalx, Vryala, and Caraoc... were the others alright?

'Over here...' he replied to the stormsinger, pushing himself up with his glaive. He coughed, the arcane dust sticking in his throat, then looked around at the mess.

Stunned from what has just happened.

After the echo of the magical blast faded away, the street was overcome by a stunned silence for several seconds. The road was still and quiet, only the distant whine of warmachine fire and deep throated roars, and the echo of a massed battle cry, could be heard on the wind. Around them, the ratmen had all either fled or been slain, leaving dozens of bodies littering the snow. Not all of the bodies were Skaven however, many Druchii had lost their lives in the fight, some of them their friends and allies, all of them great warriors worthy of remembrance. Phalx broke the silence first, shouting curses at Fiat for getting himself killed, overcome by anger and grief as he was. This outburst shocked several of the others back into motion, Caraoc calling out for Casaythe as Vryala solemnly trudged through the snow to where Saldrimek had fallen.

The warrior wanted to give her fallen kin a proper burial, and knew the Drach would likely honour his own fallen with a similar affair, but there was nothing left to bury. Fiat had been utterly undone by the arcane blast, the warrior having at last met his end. Saldrimek too had been destroyed by the Verminlord, his crumpled armour and broken axe all they could find. Even Rhamek had been reduced to a bloodied corpse that more resembled a heap of mangled gore, and Phalx could find nothing near him that he wanted to touch. Casaythe rejoined them, calling to Caraoc as the remainder of the group closed in around Vryala. Karonath and Elysian picked themselves up and warily approached the group, who formed up a few yards in front of the sewer entrance where the rest of the Skaven had fled.

As they looked over they caught sight of a shadow slipping into the dark archway, gone before any of them could get a better look. The thief Shayla had used them to clear her escape, and now made off into the sewers without so much as a thank you. The group were left alone to consider their next move, for with the Rat Ogres and their Daemonic overlord destroyed the rest of the Skaven were little more than a background threat. There was the option to return to the estate, leave the rest of the fighting to others and tend to their wounds. However, they did not yet know if Lord Kronus had been defeated at the North Gate, and some felt the need to tell Bane of Rhameks' demise. That was likely where they would find her, unless the Chaos Warriors had already overrun the north of the City. The other option was to head east, where the City wall had apparently been breached and the Beastmen, Orcs and monsters had broken into Vikarh.

The group had won their fight with the Skaven, but the rest of Vikarh was still under attack

So here they were, only six of them left alive.
Vryala, Karonath, Phalx, Elysian, Casaythe and me.
"Glad to see someone still alive. I guess we're brothers in arms, now."
Caraoc was the kind of guy who would be happy to see a glass half full rather than half empty.
Especially if he was in the right half.

A feminine silhouette made a move in the shadows, but disappeared into the sewers, now cleared of their formidable threat.
Shayla? She didn't kissed us goodbye. Is she inviting us to follow her?

Caraoc asked Elysian:
"The girl that led us here, did she promised you a payment? 'Cause she just went into the sewers.
We should be able to take care of whatever remains of the Skaven party.
Are we going to investigate what they had so precious deep in there? And where it leads?"

It could prove useful to know an escape if things turned bad here.

Still, Caraoc was not so confortable at the idea to burrow in subterranean depths. The wide ocean was best, followed by the open countryside.
What he said next was probably more aimed at Vryala, who seemed to have some kind of leadership:
"However, if we need to go back to the Rats Nest, I'm confident I can find the way back."
He was a pilot, after all.

Asking directions.

So that was what winning felt like, it was less glorious than one might have thought. They had banished a greater daemon, Elysian was still in shock about that. The joy of survival was dimmed though by the simple fact that those warriors who had really made the difference and slain the daemon were now dead. Numbly Elysian looked down at the handbow and resisted the urge to fling it over his shoulder, it had proved useless just as he had. Silently he made his way to the others and registered the slight form of Shayla disappearing into the tunnel, very likely she would be dead soon. Very likely they would all be dead soon.

"We should have songs sung of this, but I doubt they will be. I don't know about anyone else but I feel the need to pick on something my own size, what say we head east? If we survive and the city stands we can return to do what we can for the dead."

Still against oversight, would like to head east and make himself feel a little better by killing stuff.

'A lament, more like.' Casaythe replied to the shadowmage, looking at the mess in the street. What had once been Druchii were just smeared stains or piles of gore on the cobbles. Now that the daemon was dead, the enormity of what they had just done had hit him. And that b*tch of a thief had disappeared without so much as a word.

He checked his belongings, just in case, then replied to Caraoc. 'Let her get herself eaten. Women. They're nothing but trouble.'

Hanging about, waiting to see what the group decides.

In order to carry his new horn around, Caraoc took off his bow's rope and made it a shoulder strap.
He left there the now useless bow.

His comrades were calling for epic sagas and mourning about what just happened.
Music and poetry was part of Caraoc's essence, and he felt compelled to do something.
He took his inspiration from the evergoing battle and its last episode, both dramatic and successful.
Death would be the end for everyone. A worthy end was offered only to a few chosen ones.
He recalled that the fallen warriors had met better than a fate: a fame!

His voice was broken, but if songs and laments were required, so be it.
"Storming the borders of chaos - For the cause of a battle once strong
Faster than the wind we rode - To where our blackened hordes dawned
Armed in the fires of combat - The end will come fast on this day
Stronger than the gods we fought - Triumphant for the dark prophecies
Besiege the thrones of reverence - Gods of all fiery fate
Besiege the thrones of reverence - Warriors crowned this day
Aaaaaaaall - shaaaaaaall - faaaaaaall."

Mourning deads, his own way.

The bloody corsair was singing. Phalx snarled, turning from the ruins of Rhamek. Why the singing, so loud and maddening. By the Witch Kings balls he needed a drink. The Rats Nest was appealing, but the mad Shade had had enough of rats this day. Fiat was dead again. He hadn't really trusted the bastard since he'd come back, but he'd been a good fighter and comrade in arms. At least the snow and blood rain had stopped, though no doubt the city would be stained for many weeks to come, if Virkarh remained that was.

The battle was not over, Phalx reloaded Deathspitter, calling to the others. We came to kill Kronus. I'm going to find him and shove this up his arse. He raised Deathspitter high, before flicking up the hood of his cloak. Come, let us be done with this.He wanted to be alone, he was tired, past exhaustion or the pain f his wounds, a deep ache that had settled in his bones.

But they had a job to do, one that would pay well, and hopefully keep his home where it was. Virkarh, his home, yet he had only lived for for a few years. Phalx headed north, toward the sounds of battle and stench of death.

Phalx will head north, in the search for Lord Kronus.

OOC - If even Raneth is too busy to post you know things are hectic in the world  Without a final decision on direction yet being made I will control V and have her take command

IC -

Caraoc sung a lament for the dead as the other, less musically inclined members of the group began searching through the bloodied snow for anything of interest, finding nothing but gory reminders of what they had just endured. Shayla passed them by almost completely unnoticed, and Caraocs' consideration to follow her down into the sewers was quickly dismissed. They and the Midnight Guard had cleared the way for her, the Rat Ogres and Verminlord no longer a threat, but they doubted a lone elf, even one as shady as her, could make it out of the Skaven infested sewers alone. Elysian recalled the thief saying she needed to get through to leave the City, and made a mental note that if things went really bad this was supposedly one of their only ways out. He also remembered her saying she would happily take their gold for showing them the way, and judging by the few members of the group now missing gold or small items, she had done so without asking. The Shadowmancer didn't know whether to count Shayla as an ally, a mere acquaintance, or a sly enemy not to be trusted. The rest of the group certainly spared no kindness for her, save perhaps Caraoc.

The group quickly forgot the scout for the time being, focusing on what dire task awaited them next in the process of bringing Vikarh back off it's knees and removing the remaining threats from inside the City walls. Elysian put forwards the idea of going east to investigate the breach in the wall, but Phalx had already made his mind up and was going to go north. The Mage knew from experience that there was no stopping the Shade unless every other members of the group disagreed, and even then he was hard to sway. Caraoc and Casaythe seemed not to mind where this adventure took them next however, meaning Phalx already had the backing of two others and would not reconsider. The Shade was already moving back up the narrow street, reloading Deathspitter, as Vryala voiced her own decision to the group, one that she knew Karonath and likely Elysian would follow, and that in turn would gain the Corsairs' and no doubt Phalx.

"I agree, we still have our duty to Blackthorn to attend to in seeing that Lord Kronus is dead, and if Bane is still up there we can bring her word of Rhameks' sacrifice. If we head north from here though, we will be lost in the narrow roads and it may take us all night to get anywhere. Let's head back east as far as the market, avoiding Lord Black this time of course, and then follow the main road north. That way we may get a glimpse of what is going on near the east wall too." As ever, the Warriors' plan made perfect sense, and as the group reached the end of the narrow road once more, then started to retrace their steps in the direction of the Rats Nest, and then onwards in the direction of the Commoners Market. Even trying to follow the trail they had previously walked was a challenge, trying to get through the denser streets of the Commoners Quarter would have taken them hours.

The group reached the Beast Pens, only a short distance from the South Gate, having been on constant edge in case an escaped Nauglir tried to pounce on them from a dark alley. The walk had been uneventful though, save for dozens of commoners milling about in apparent confusion or fear. Some were making for the South Gate, no doubt unaware that it had been sealed, as others took up arms and patrolled the streets in a defiant, if somewhat pointless, attempt to save their homes. The ratmen were mostly gone, but the group saw numerous Skaven bodies they did not remember from before, proving that they had not been the only ones fighting in this district in the last hour. Here and there, they had passed the partially devoured bodies of lone Druchii or Skaven, showing all the tell tale signs of a Nauglir attack. Deep claw wounds marked the chests from behind where the raptors had pounced onto their prey, and and the heads had been bitten clean off, before the entrails were devoured. With so much food about, the Cold Ones had eaten the best and then moved on, leaving the bony limbs for the carrion.

Now approaching the South Gate, the group took an unfamiliar road that led them north east, rather than following the one they were on all the way to the gate. They were fortunate that Lord Black had not recognised them the first time they passed him, they didn't want to risk doing it twice. The Beastmaster Lord had a vendetta against the likes of Vryala, Karonath, Phalx and their newly departed friend Fiat, as well as the others who had been with them at the time and were now gone too. They suspected that the fact they had taken a valuable creature from him was only the start of his ill feelings towards them, hurt pride and Druchii hatred could be a dangerous mix. Not wanting to end up on his torture racks before being used as Nauglir food themselves, Vryala and Phalx led the group away. The Corsairs' followed as rearguard, taking backwards glances every few minutes to ensure they were not being stalked by one of the raptors, or anything worse.

They emerged on the north-south road a few hundred yards up from the South Gate, still within sight of Lord Black and his men but too far away to be noticed for who they were. They saw the Beastmaster lashing his whip at a gang of angry commonfolk who seemed to be trying to evacuate the City, his Black Guard trying to usher them away with harsh kicks and knocks with sword hilts. The group didn't need to watch to know that if the mob didn't disperse soon someone would be made example of, and so they turned their eyes to the east instead, or rather their eyes were drawn that way by the deep throated roar of a mighty beast. Their keen elf eyes saw far, but beyond the vast and empty space that was the Commoners Market, they saw only the tops of buildings, a thick plume of smoke rising from beyond to obscure the sky. The sounds of battle were carried towards them as the wind changed, the clash of steel and the drumbeat of hundreds of feet. It was then that they heard the roar again, and they realised that it was not coming from one voice, but from many. Orcs.

The Beastmen army had drawn them to Vikarh like flies to a rotting carcass, the promise of bloodshed all the calling the greenskins needed to take up arms and join a fight. For as long as the Beastmen seemed to be winning and the Druchii put up a good fight, the Orcs would stick around and cause mayhem in the east. Last they had heard, Bane had sent for the Hag and her Maibds to join the fight in the east, but whether they had done so remained to be seen. Certainly the battle was not done yet, and if the Hag of Vikarh and her legions could not sway the tide of battle so easily, things were worse than they had imagined. It stung to know that the Hag, Kalius Bane, the newest Commander of the City Guard, and other such warriors would no doubt take the glory if Vikarh was saved. This small group of mercenaries had just defeated what could have been one of the largest threats in Vikarh almost single handedly, but didn't expect to get a mention.

As they lingered on such thoughts, or merely watched the smoke rising in the east and listened to the sounds of war, they heard sounds that told them all was not lost for Vikarh. First, it was the continued whine of reaper fire, as the mighty bolt throwing war machines continued to launch from the walls. Then came the echo of a Druchii horn, one the group recognised in pitch to be Khainite. It was answered by another, perhaps a horn of the City Guard of the Drachs' elite forces, the group could not be sure. Were they sounding victory, or were they calling for aid? Neither blast seemed at all familiar to the group, and all Druchii knew from a young age what the most basic of horn commands meant. And then it struck them, as the sky was pierced by another great roar, this one drowning out even the noisome war cry of the Orcs. This roar came from a single throat, and the group looked to the north just in time to see the beast that had issued the call.

The Tower of the Drach was a thin spike of black against a background of grey from such a distance, but the group could just make it out thanks to the moonlight reflecting on it's jagged edges, and the green witchfires that burned at it's peak. A black shadow, huge and magnificent, dropped from the height of the tower and fell into a swooping glide to the east. They had no doubts about who could be riding such a beast, and that the creature could only be one thing, a Black Dragon. It was rumoured that the Drach of Vikarh owned such a mount, but none in the City who spread such rumours could ever claim to have seen it. The horns in the east sounded again, the triumphant calls of the soldiery of Vikarh as their dark master joined them in battle. Whatever the Orcs and Beastmen had brought to the fight, surely it could not stand against the wrath of the Drach, and the power of a Dragon?

"Still want to go north, Shade?" asked Vryala with a grin.

As they were strolling across the city, Caraoc made a mental map of the city areas they had travelled.

"Still want to go north, Shade?" had asked Vryala.

Not waiting for the answer, Caraoc commented:
"The North concentrates the attention of Bane herself. Our group wouldn't make much difference to be noticed."
- and if we did, that might not be good news for spellcasters.

South is so well guarded that even allies might not be welcome, apparently.
The East is assaulted by Beastmen and other abominations, if I recall well.
These foes come in hordes. We might well find ourselves useful.

- and I wonder how my new horn would behave against beastmen.

In the East indeed, there was an appealling star calling Caraoc.
"Star of the East, oh bad mayhem star,
Guiding us on to heaven afar
Sorrow and grief and pulled by the light
Thou hope of each mortal, in death's lonely night"

Pushing for the East.

OOC - Just to confirm Calisson, the Drach is heading east to the breach (as you said "The North concentrates all the mightiest lords of the city.")

In the South: Calius Black and his Black Guard, at the South Gate, citizen milita.
No immediate threat remaining.

In the North: Bane & most of the Midnight Guardians.
Threat = Chaos Warriors, Lord Kronus, Kirathi & more

In the East: The Drach, The Hag (supposedly), most of the City Guard, the Executioners, the Witch Elves, citizen militia.
Threat = Beastmen horde, Orcs and Monsters drawn from the wilds.

In the West: citizen milita only, but no great threat.

The centre of the City was already cleared of ratmen earlier in the battle, but some Chaos Warriors will have reached that far into Vikarh already.

"It seems the east is well accounted for in commanders as well, perhaps the north would be a good idea afterall," Elysian said. He had no desire to fight under the gaze of the Drach. Even from dragon back who knew what arcane equipment he had or how far he saw.

"Much as I don't want to meet Kirathi again we do have a score to settle."

For a moment rage blinded her, and she ran at the beast headlong, It swiped out at her as fire burst overhead, its great blade swishing around slow and high enough for her to duck under and hack at the things belly. The thing fell backwards and swung wilder, so K stepped forward and stabbed it right in its eye. She stepped back, well pleased, but then the blade came whistling and cracking around, faster than she could see, and she knew could not stop it. She fell, twisting to get a last look at the thing that had done for her, and try to take it down with, but looking up she saw the end of the great blade showing black green and red, out of Fiat's armour. She saw the blade sparkle and shake, while Fiat's ill-gotten helm also sparkled and shook, and for a second she got the feeling the two bits of metal were fighting each other, as if she could see the tension between them as it were in full colour and sound. And she knew she needed not to be around when the thing that happened next happened. She scrabbled backwards on her butt, but not fast enough. The blast blew her away against a nearby wall.

The shook herself free of the shock, and saw that where there had been a great daemon thing in rat form, there was no nothing but Fiat's broken arms. She looked about. She could still hear and smell battle in the city, but not see from just here. It struck her just then that even that evil thing might not be the worst foe she would face today. There was a brief debate in which Karonath held no opinion but waited see what the group might be. They followed Vryala's lead to the east, skirting Black and his things, and passing signs of his creatures' handiwork on the way. They saw him, too and there he was whipping folk as usual. K wondered where was his precious Manticore now? Not that she herself could speak badly of the beast. It was not answerable for its master.

They marched on, still bearing east, because that was still where the sounds of battle were loudest. There was a great roar, which K at first took to be one voice, but which when it echoed, split into thousands. She had heard such voices before, she knew, but could not name the creatures. Vryala said it was orcs. K had not seen many orcs, and never had she seen many together. Things to see to the east then.

The roar of the ORcs was met with a horn blast K knew well, a Khainite war horn, again coming from the East. Then another blast, which K did not know. She looked about, and saw inquisitive grimaces on all five faces. Then she heard a sound from the north, and this she knew straight away. Her head snapped about, and saw, rising in flame and fury from the tower of the Drach, a great Black Dragon. K had seen Dragons before, she who had lived on the streets of Naggarond, and had seen Not only dragons but indeed Seraphon himself, the greatest of them all, and had of course also laid her eyes on the Witch King Malekith himself.

Not that she had known it, herself, at the time, or that she would have been altogether quite so impressed. The strength of Dragons and Kings was something a way and a half outside her ken in those days. So the sight of this Dragon, it raised an eyebrow on that unguessable face, and a small glad smile, but she did not cheer and wonder like those around her. Her mind had disappeared out of Vikarh, back to strangely high and sunny days in the greatest city of the Dark Elves, when dragons flew here and there around the skies. It crossed her mind then she had seen some things, more than most, and had nearly forgotten them for no fault but lack of care.

Lack of care, that, is, for that sort of thing. She had cares enough to keep her busy at all hours. There was always something to run from, to hide from, steal from, and to look back on and to try to forget had ever happened. Things to beat down and kill. And a great lot of them here too.

K did not run and hide any more. When a thing set itself at odds with K's new world, she put a sword out of hell in it's face. That was what the Dragon had gone to do, and that was what she would do.

I would like to go East.

One quick bolt, one quick bolt between her smug eyes. Phalx shook away such thoughts, as he looked upon the great flying beast, the titan of the sky. What a glorious thing it was. The Shade watched it idly. It was death, or one of that bloody things many incarnations. To be such a thing, to ride one into gory battle, and see your foes turned to ash. Not for him, not for the likes of Fiat. They had always got by on the skin of their teeth, and would that ever end. Bloody piss I need a drink!

K had said something. Whatever the deadly wench said didn't matter, let them just head into another blood bath, where another one of them would die, or be mauled, to be tattooed with fresh scars. Phalx gave a agreeing grunt, still watching the black shadowy dragon.

'Greenskins..?' Casaythe said absently, as he lowered the chicken leg he had pilfered from an unattended stall on their way through the city. The fight had left him famished, but now he realised it would be a good while yet before he got a good rest and meal.

The city attack from the east was quite severe, the sounds of battle ringing through the streets, carried by the wind.

Some of his companions wanted to go east, others north. He wanted to go back to the pub.

Realising they were most likely to head into a situation promising almost certain death, he threw a nervous smile at the group and asked, 'I take it this sort of thing is all in a day's work for you?'

Before he could be given an answer, a winged dragon roared as it swept down from somewhere in the city. "What, Malekith turns up now?" he thought, wondering where the monster had come from. "Just hope it's on our side."

Doesn't know about the Drach's dragon, and didn't notice where it came from. He'll go east or north.

Caraoc was quite reluctant to go North and meet Bane's gaze again.
But who knows? Maybe the Captain of the Midnight Guard had met her fate that night?

Could the stars tell or predict about the ongoing fight in the North?
Caraoc looked at Heavens's dome and listened to the distant echoes reverbed by the skies.
What he heard from star gossips seemed to indicate that Bane was still alive, among hills of corpses, friend elfs and giant foes united in death.
She seemed to have become rather lonely, though.

"Hear the distant thunders - Calling my name in awe
High up in the skies I was born - Tempests compose my glorious ode…
I defy the giants of frost - Alone I have faced their hordes!
At the hour of my wrath - Death was dealt by my avenging hand!
Mjollnir hammers the hills - The Bane of giants it brings!
Mjollnir rides on the storm - The Bane of giants is wrought!...
I fear not the tempest - Boiling in the brooding Northern skies above"

I have a feeling that Bane is doing fine in the North, but her regiment is severely depleted.
Or is it that only her feats are worth being relayed by the stars?
Caraoc scrutinized the skies again, hoping to find a reason to go North or not.

Trying to interpret what astrology has to say about the battle in the North.

The Drach himself soared to battle upon a great Wyrm, making V feel quite inconsequential despite the dire battle she'd just been a part of. Heading back North to meet up with Bane had been her initial plan, but her friends seemed to favour another direction. Vryala, exhausted both in body and mind, hadn't the heart to dissuade anyone; death and violence would follow wherever they'd choose to go.

K seemed lucid, which was always welcome. Apparently she had a mind of fighting alongside her sisters. And why not? For all she cared Kirathi, Kronus and Bane could all obliterate each other. So yeah, let's follow the Drach. Just don't get in front of him, heh heh.
