To Elysian's surprise and delight Caroc's insanity paid off and they were soon overlooking the temple. At the moment all looked calm, well as calm as things could look with several hundred semi naked baying women waving swords and screaming for blood. There did not seem to be any sign of chaos warriors though, nor any terrible dark lord.

"Well this is the temple, is it the same one you saw in your vision?" he asked Caroc
"If so it looks like whatever you saw hasn't started yet."

Asks if this is the place. If it is then just sit tight and watch what happens.

Nothing less than utter mayhem greeted the three mercenaries' advance; Vikarh guards fought for their lives, terrifying monsters sowed all kinds of havoc, and in the midst of it all the Druchii's finest collided with the enemy horde. The scent of blood and fear was almost tangible on the air, and Vryala found solace in what could very well be an epic end to her career.

A fierce bellow broke her out of her reverie. Again, Phalx was quick on the trigger, peppering an Orc into submission. Four more came onwards, engaging Karonath and herself in pairs, and V found herself unable to halt their advance. As it was, she could not follow her battle instinct and free up the Khainite; she'd have to rely on the Shade's good sense and will to live. A long shot by anyone's standards, she chuckled, before moving to do what she did best: turning defense into offense.

Vryala plays hard-to-hit, aiming to wear down the Greenskin brutes' legs to eventually immobilise them.

IN THE NORTH.

It had not been the first kite that Caraoc had made.
But that was the first time he had made one for transportation purpose.
And it worked! Caraoc had been confident, but still, to see it actually working was another story.
As he took off, Caraoc had just the time to grab Casaythe's arm and rapt him by surprise.
Despite his obvious deep wish, Casaythe would have no opportunity to get back any soon on the deck - err, ground.

As the improbable kite lifted them with unexpected power, Caraoc exulted in joy. "Heeeeeee howwwwww!" :D
He always had been convinced that it could be possible for an elf to litterally walk on the wind without the help of a flying creature.
And during that all mighty night, he did it!

The screams of his friend reminded Caraoc that he had a task as a pilot, which was to steer the damn thing safely away of shoal waters, or whatever would pose similar risks.
Indeed, they were flying erratically, slaloming around the city's chimneys, while Elysian was following on a small jumpy cloud.
How can I go right? Oops, now left? Upwards? No, down, down... ow, higher! Pffew!
There was definitively a need for some kind of stick to help steering the air craft.

OK, the temple was now a near sight.
Time to go downwards and land gently.
Uh, not that fast, raise up! Drop, Casaythe.
Nice maneuvre. Well. Let's stop here the experience.

The landing was not as easy as in his dreams. The vertical distance had been quite underestimated.
Still, the overall experience had been overwhelmingly exiting. !razz!

Not for everyone, though. Caraoc noted that some of the insults yelled by Casaythe were until then unheard of. A higher vision did improve his creativity, too.

Lessons learned: in principle, one could fly, that was now certain.
But to do it as accurately as a bird would still require a little bit more skill.

Elysian asked "Well this is the temple, is it the same one you saw in your vision?"
Caraoc looked towards the temple.
Obviously, it was not the same as in his vision: this one was full of crazy half naked female Khainite, rather than occupied by many walking armours with horns.
But the building itself? Was there, like he had seen, "a pillar of the blackest stone? the stone steps of a temple? a not yet burning temple?"

Trying to match vision and the real thing.

OOC: Kinslayer, what follows are indications about intentions.
As they are exhausted and so are the winds of magic, the trio would likely wait and rest, whatever the results of the correlation. Discussions would depend on that results.

In case the temple in the vision matches the real one, that would be a proof of the validity of the vision, but indicating a likely future.
If chaos warriors would arrive, there would be a reaction to your next mod post, probably to try to change the predicted future - after all, the only reason to get a glimpse of the future is to have a chance to change it or at least to react to it.
OOC, as well:

The string of profanities that spilt from Casaythe's lips as the corsair was grabbed and pulled through the air was mind blowing. The druchii spat and howled angrily, and swore to Caraoc that he would get him back somehow, someday, when he least expected it. Had he contemplated the power that his friend had summoned to lift all three of them and carry them across the city, he in his armour, he might have thought twice about that remark about eels.

All that was irrelevant now. They landed, Casaythe regaining his feet on solid ground. Brushing himself down and retying his white hair so as not to look too flustered, he scowled and took in the view. Before him was the Temple, impressive and terrifying in its design. And before it were gathering hundreds and hundreds of witch elves.

The corsair's frown turned into a cocky grin as he admired the lithe females. 'You know Caraoc... I might just forgive you.'

Taking in the scenery.

One in the eye, three in the chest near the heart and lungs, a few more in the arms, and one in the groin. The brutish Orc took another step, then finally collapsed in a bloody heap. Good piss, these buggers were strong. The other two of their small party were not so quick. Both were knocked down by the green bull charge. They were skilled enough to move from the next attack, and step in front o the Shade, as Phalx continued to fire.

His idea had worked, the horrid stinking beasts were now focused fully on the two front line members of their wicked band. Phalx let Deathspitter hang, the large Orc fang clattering softly against the side of the black and deadly crossbow.

Phalx will now leave the immediate fight to sneak around the flank and rear of the attacking Orcs. He will then come in with some hamstringing blows from his sword, and some spine splitting punches from his horn dagger.

Elysian, Casaythe and Caraoc stood in the shadows of the street looking onto the grounds of the Temple of Khaine, trying not to be noticed by the Hag and her Witches as they assembled for war in the courtyard just beyond the iron fence. They were an enchanting sight, lethal in their beauty, and the trio found it hard to keep their eyes off the Witch Elves. The Hag in particular was darkly enthralling, despite being one of the most dangerous and powerful Druchii in Vikarh and having lived for nearly a thousand years, she had the visage of a beautiful Druchii youth. Only the hard look of her eyes would tell them any different were she to look upon them, filled with the eternal hatred of Khaine.

Eventually, Caraoc managed to look away and he examined the Temple. It was an impressive structure, the iron fence only broken once by a mighty gate which lead up a blood coloured stone path to the entrance. This was carved to resemble the mighty jaws of a manticore, one of the many beasts of Khaine. Through the teeth of the beast was the inner temple, where a fountain of blood dominated a vast chamber. Several small spired rose up from the back of the Temple, along with the vast Tower of the Hag, which was surprisingly narrow for it was the second tallest tower in all of Vikarh. The Astromancer tried to link his vision to the Temple of Khaine, but knew it was not the same place. The vision had showed a much more simple and smaller building, with several wide steps leading up to a smaller doorway, a place which Caraoc had thought to be a Temple because of the ornate statues outside... Statues of... dark steeds? Or was it Nauglir?

Caraoc voiced his realisation, and looked to Elysian for guidance. The Shadow Mage didn't know of where Caraoc spoke, but guessed someone who had been in Vikarh a lot longer might well know.

***

In the east, Vryala and Karonath took on a very similar approach to dealing with the Orcs as one another, as Phalx darted back and tried to slip around the side of the combat as he reloaded. Both girls had been put on the back foot by the brute force and savagery of their green skinned opponents, but both now blocked their wild attacks and started trying to hack at arms and legs. Immobilising the Orcs almost seemed easier than killing them outright, the brutes too stupid to lay down and die even once ran through or stabbed in the neck. Karonath danced from side to side between her two opponents, as Phalx scrambled over the rubble that had once been a house to the side of her, and leaped into combat with his sword and punch dagger drawn just as K sliced her Draich into an arm. The Orc stumbled away from her, but came back with renewed vigour a moment later, bellowing it's fury as it's arm flopped uselessly at it's side.

Vryala too was beating off the attacks of two of the thick skulled creatures, using her shield to block the heavy swing of the club and her sword to parry each repetitive hack and slash of the second Orcs' axes. It was a simple way to fight, but the Orcs brute strength would see her worn down and beaten in a matter of minutes if she didn't even the odds. Luckily the Warrior had just the trick, and upon seeing an opening rammed her shield into one of the Orcs, getting inside the swing of the axe wielder in the same motion. She brought her sword across, cutting through a thick leg as the other Orc went off balance, before darting back again just in time to avoid the retaliation swing. As one Orc toppled over and the other stumbled back, she glanced right and saw K and Phalx finish the Orc the Khainite had wounded, this time taking his other arm off completely, before Phalx rammed his punch dagger into it's spine from behind.

They were evening out the odds, but even three against three the Orcs more than matched them in killing power and muscle, and they refused to back down.

That was not the temple of his vision.
The trouble was that despite having lived in Vikarh for his whole life, Elysian did not recognize anything from what Caraoc could recall.

Looking towards the Temple, Caraoc couldn't get his sight off its charming inhabitants. Especially that one who had this specific you-don't-know-what that made her...
Being a male, the idea to get closer and ask her his path crossed his mind for a second.
Of course, being a male, and even more, a pilot, he would never ask his path, unless having dismissed previously any possible other solution.

So where could have been this damn darkest pillar?
Would it be in an area where Elysian had never been? Vikarh was large enough for whole districts to remain unknown to some of the inhabitants.
"I would expect Bane to fight in the North Gate. Elysian, you're familiar with how the North Gate looks like, aren't you?
Aren't there statues of dark steed and nauglir around? You know, they look so real that..."

Caraoc paused abruptly to gather his mind.
"... that one could swear it was the real thing turned into stone by a Cockatrice."
As he found one more pressing reason to investigate the North Gate - stealthly -, Caraoc suddenly wished that his vision wasn't reflecting reality.

Wondering.

So this wasn't the place. More and more Elysian was wondering whether coming with these two away from the fighting had been such a good idea, but he was committed now.

"Blackthorn would know, it sounds like his sort of place. There is not enough money in temples, at least not enough to be worth the trouble. We should find Blackthorn, or maybe Sevro. Last we saw they were at the gate but Sevro and his guards will either be dead or gone from there by now, there is no way they could stand against the army of chaos. Still the gate looks like our best option given that Blackthorn could be flying anywhere."

Seeking older and wiser heads but with the proviso that they will (A) listen and (B) not execute me. Given a lack of information the North Gate area seems like the best place to start.

A rare glimpse of despair crossed Caraoc's mind.
Elysian was talking about asking directions to people who were dead or flying anywhere but on the ground.

Still, Elysian had a good point. Caraoc resumed his usual optimistic stance.
"Sevro waited for Chaos only long enough for Bane to come. Do you know where is his barracks?
A Pegasus with a rider must rest sometimes. We may not need to fly again. Do you know where its stalls would be?
Let's go!"

Moving on!

'Couldn't we ask her?' Casaythe queried, gesturing to the Hag. In reality, he knew she'd rip them to pieces before they even uttered a single word, but he could think of worse ways to die than at the hands of a feral beauty.

The mages seemed to think that the way forward was to find Sevro or Blackthorn, and in truth they were probably right. Casaythe hardly knew the city, having only resided here for ten months prior to this point. He knew the best bars, gambling dens, and houses of ill repute. He knew the places to avoid when travelling between them, the docks, and the better eateries. But he'd never made the effort to explore properly, let alone see the more important landmarks within the city. He wished he had brought a map along from somewhere.

"... Let's go!" remarked Caraoc.

'Oi, since when has the pilot ordered the Captain?' he jibed. He had never questioned Caraoc's sense of direction though, and wasn't about to now.

'Oi, since when has the pilot ordered the Captain?' asked Casaythe.
Caraoc joked: "Fools's night. Elysian becomes the pilot. I become the captain. I'm sure you'll wish to become stealthy when we meet the Cockatrice.
Now, if you'd rather wish to see the end of the fashion show, I'm with you."

At this point, Caraoc realized that the Hag was starting to look towards them.
"Er, actually, risking the Cockatrice might be safer than remaining here, don't you think?"

In the north, the three mercenaries decided that if they wanted to locate the place Caraoc had dreamed about the best course of action would be to find Lord Blackthorn or Sevro. The last time they had seen the Guard Captain he had been holding the road just south of the North Gate with two dozen men, and the last time they had seen Blackthorn had been when he flew north again from the plaza atop Heartrender, his Dark Pegasus. As the trio felt the eyes of some of the Maibds start to wander their way, they wisely slunk back into the shadows and retraced their steps around the corner. It seemed coming to the Temple of Khaine had been an unnecessary diversion, but one which luckily had not wasted too much time thanks to their magical transport. Now they were well and truly grounded however, and they began to walk north again in the direction of the great west-east road.

As they went they kept a wary eye out for danger but thus far saw nothing but the frequent small bands of other Druchii fleeing south, or going north with determined expressions, no doubt unaware of what they would face there. They reached the road, and during a brief discussion Elysian remembered Varins' last words to the group before he had flown north, and expressed them to the Corsairs, who nodded as they too remembered. The Noble had said he would fly north and find Sevro, and pull the Guard Captain back to the estate to ensure it was well defended should the Chaos Warriors reach it's walls. Whether or not Blackthorn would have remained at the estate they could not say, but Elysian at least knew Sevro would not be one to neglect his duties, and that if he yet lived that was where he would be found.

Somewhat more familiar with the streets in the north-west quarter, the Shadowmancer set a course that would lead the Corsairs directly north to House Blackthorn, also bringing them closer to the North Gate, but without unnecessarily heading east along the main road, then north and then west again. Unsure of the route or the location of House Blackthorn, but unwilling to try asking anyone else about the building Caraoc had glimpsed in his vision, the Corsairs followed without question. The further north they went, the less they saw of the mercenary warbands, and the closer they came to the tell tale signs of battle up ahead; the echo of clashing blades, screams and the crackle of blazing fires. As they continued north, Caraoc once more tried to focus on the vision, unwilling to let it slip from his memory and trying to glean more details from the shattered images that had been placed in his head.

The steps were stone... black stone... wide and curved, creating a half circle around the entrance, overlooked by two great statues of... dark steeds. It was definitely horses, majestic Druchii horses...

The Astromancer was startled out of his reverie by Casaythe, who called a warning as they turned the next corner in the road, now only fifteen minutes march from the estate. The Corsair had decided to lead in case his lightly armoured companions were attacked and they lost their guide, and he turned the corner and came face to face with an enemy. The human was wider than the Druchii despite being unarmoured, but not as tall. His features were blunt, his chin hairy and tied into a long braid, as was his long hair that swept around behind him as he turned. The Marauder carried a burning torch in one hand, which he had just used to set the building on the corner of the road alight after covering it's wooden door in lantern oil. There was screaming from within, the screams of Druchii women and children as their house began to burn around them. They were in the Nobles Quarter now, but only the houses further north were walled estates, the homes of the very powerful and wealthy. In this southernmost part of the quarter, the working elite lived separated from the scum of society, but without their own walls and guards now proved to be vulnerable.

The Marauder was one of nearly ten on the long road, and his savage shout made others turn their heads. The wild men brandished axes, braziers and bucklers, each somewhere marked with the star of Chaos.

The closest Marauder swung his axe in a backhand slash which Casaythe managed to avoid as he leaned and stepped backwards, only registering the scene a moment after it happened. He shouted a warning of his own.

IN THE NORTH

As they were walking northwards through narrow streets, Caraoc concentrated on the description of what he had seen. He wanted not to forget any essential detail.

-=-=-

Suddenly, Casaythe stopped at a corner and shouted a warning as he stepped back.
In the night, there was some fire light coming from where Casaythe was looking. So far, only Casaythe had been in view of the other side of the corner.
Not knowing who or what was behind the corner, Caraoc readied his handbow and leant on the wall, preparing to ambush who/whatever would come first after Casaythe.

Fight or flee? That would be Casaythe's decision, and Caraoc would get along.
Just in case, Caraoc prepared a war song. His arcane instincts made him select the most appropriate for the situation.
His voice was still broken from the long air trip, but the spirit was there and fighty.

"Night marauders lay waste to the land - Honorless battle, consuming the dead
Collecting bodies to consume - Keep the engine burning hot, apocalyptic war machine
Needs fuel for fire, nomadic fighters rule the land...
...Take no prisoners, all will be damned - Fight without mercy, there's fates worse than death..."

Letting Casaythe retreat. Ambushing at the corner.

Remembering that Sevro at least and perhaps Blackthorn would be back at the estate Elysian led the way back there. Despite a quiet trip to the noble’s quarter the neatly paved street was suddenly filled with human barbarians.

'Damn it why can't these nobles look after their people? They are supposed to be knights and warriors after all.' He knew he couldn't voice such thoughts, after all his employer wasn't much better but to Elysian it seemed a terrible waste for the nobles to selfishly guard their own little towers rather than pooling them together. United they would have been able to raise a substantial army and help defend the city, instead they were making sure that they were alright and to hell with everyone else. Maybe if they realised who brought they food, made their robes and paid their rents they would be a little more concerned.

Such working class anger was not helpful however, not when faced by an angry mob. Immediately Elysian wished for the presence of the warriors he had fought with; Fiats and Saldrimek now dead, Karonath and Vryala, even Phalx despite his pig headed insanity and perpetual ill manners. Instead he found himself gravely outnumbered with only two relative strangers and only one warrior. If they were to win through they needed help, even to get away they would need a diversion. The night had already been deeply trying and his head ached as much as his feet but more magic was required. They needed something to keep them from being overwhelmed, a few at a time they could cope with but one mass of north men would be unstoppable. Reaching out to the wind of shadows Elysian began a low, sibilant chant that pried at the fears of these simple folk, gnawing at their darkest fears.

Elysian will try to project and aura of fear and despair discouraging the marauders to attack and hopefully buying some time.

The screams of women and children pierced the air as Casaythe locked eyes with the marauder. There were nine others amid the street, buildings alight, their rampage well underway. As he stepped back, he growled to Caraoc, 'Can you do something to put out that damn fire? Nobles... they have a lot of money. They might be grateful... failing that, fan the flames and blow them towards those ugly bastards.'

Outnumbered, they were going to have to use every trick in the book. Running away simply was not an option this time.

The marauder swung his axe at Casaythe, who leaned back and blocked it with the iron shaft of his glaive. 'Get back you two!' He called to the mages. The strength of the northman shocked the corsair, the man's thickly muscled arms marked with sigils and scars of the Chaos gods. This bugger was going to fight with brute force. So Casaythe was going to have to fight dirty.

He lowered his glaive and brought it sharp end up between the marauder's legs. 'Welcome to Vikarh.' he spat.

Has attacked the marauder between the legs with his glaive, hoping to fatally wound him in the "lower regions" with a cut from the groin into the pelvis and lower abdomen.

Another of the horrid brutes fell, a team effort from himself and Karonath. He rammed his dagger into the things back. Its point caught between to vertebrae. With more pressure and a twist, the rest pf the horn length sank in. The Orc fell to the ground dead.

The wild Shade was quick to move away from this kill, the fire in his heart blazing. Three of the brutes stood now, a fair fight for even the three of them. Phalx flicked the blood from the horn, his sword equally thirst. With a howl he charged left.

Phalx will charge at the left most Orc, intentionally going wide, hoping to grab the three brutes attention, giving the other two Druchii a chance to step in. This done Phalx will spring back into the combat, using the terrain to his advantage to fell the green beasts.

IN THE NORTH

After emptying a full load of handbow bolts into the first body emerging from the corner, Caraoc risked an eye and discovered the group of semi-naked humans and the havoc they were causing.

That was really weird to be on the receiving end of a plunder, for a change.
Obviously his two companions were pissed off to see how the population was left to its fate by the powerful noble houses living unscathed nearby.
Casaythe bravely prepared to repel the humans.
Strangely, the ire of Elysian turned out to become an eerie song of dread, which chilled even Caraoc's backbone despite him not being the target.

Caraoc himself was disgusted as soon as he saw how the humans were behaving.
These barbarian were truly unprofessional. These unskilled amateurs were spoiling all the fun of what could have been a cool loot.
What good was it to burn people without raping, plundering and torturing?
Those pitiful uneducated cavemen only deserved to die.

'fan the flames and blow them towards those ugly bastards.' required Casaythe.
"Fire aye aye." replied Caraoc.
Caraoc was not that proficient about creating fire, but strong winds blowing existing flames towards the humans, that could be considered.
Caraoc took a deep, deep breath. With a bit of concentration, a sudden burst of wind should fuel the fire for a second. The barbarians were bare skin, that should prove a fatal flaw.

"Do unto others as they've done to you
But what the hell is this world coming to?...
...Soon to fill our lungs the hot winds of death
The gods are laughing <ho ho ha ha huh huh>, so take your last breath
Fight fire with fire - Ending is near
Fight fire with fire - Bursting with fear
Fight fire with fire, Fight fire with fire, Fight fire with fire - Fight! - Fight! - fire..."

Once the fire would have purified the street from the human threat, a classic rain dance sung with the usual falsetto tone would easily put the flames off and wash the garbage away.

Prepare for grilled pork smell.

OOC - It will be hard to reunite the two groups immediately, the trio that went North travelled for over an hour to reach the Temple and have then headed for another half hour or so towards House Blackthorn (it's a big City). In the scene to the east, the other trio will be fighting the Orcs just five or ten minutes after you lot left, while you are still crossing the Commoners Market behind them. The two scenes are now separated by almost 2 hours.

If V, K and Phalx stay in the east, and you guys decide to go all the way back there, you will be there almost 4 hours after you left, in which time I will have to pause you to advance their scene along somewhat rapidly until you arrive. That is the problem when people split up and do different things in different places. It's made even more so when a combat which lasts a few minutes can take 3-4 modposts, but a walk which takes several hours can take only 1 post. Do you see what I mean? But fear not, I will make it work. I'm good like that :P

IC -

In the east Phalx, Vryala and Karonath continued their skirmish with the Orcs, the other surviving member of their group and their new allies having left them to face the greenskins alone, no doubt now heading across the market towards the main road. Thoughts of Elysian and the Corsairs were cast aside, as Vryala ducked another wild swipe of an axe and Karonath twisted around a descending club, moving with such agility that the Orcs could not hit them. The lithe Druchii had to do so, for they knew how much muscle the greenskins packed, and that a direct hit from any of their crude weapons would cause serious injury or worse. For Phalx, being hit was out of the question, for he was barely armoured and refused to be beaten by such a foe. He had battled Daemons, great champions of Chaos, even one of the dreaded Vampires, he would not die in a fight with three Orcs.

The Shade darted to the left, springing from one slab of stone onto a chunk of fallen masonry, landing at waist height to the nearest Orc. The brute turned and swung for him, it's club coming around level and aiming to take out his legs, but he hopped over it with a nimble jump. He had planned his move well, and his shadow was cast across the three Orcs by the back light of the green moon, causing the other two to turn and look up at him as well. He snarled at them from his vantage point, falling on the closest as he watched Vryala and Karonath simultaneously come crashing in from the side, slashing weapons at their distracted opponents before the dim witted brutes could react. Phalx put his punch dagger in the first Orcs forehead as his blade went into it's gut, and his weight and momentum drove the Orc onto it's back, the Shade crouched upon it's chest with a victorious cackle. He watched as the other two Orcs fell, one almost bisected by Bloodfeather, the other run through on the end of Vryalas' cold blade.

As the Orcs died, the trio had a moment to catch their breath and resume their evaluation of the battle in the east. Close to a hundred buildings still stood, but many hundreds more had been toppled by the smashing rocks of the Orcs, and by the many monstrosities unleashed by the Beastmen. At first they had seen only beasts they were familiar with, those somehow brought to battle from the Naggaroth wilds, no doubt under spell or whip. As they looked across the wide battlefield though they saw other, more bestial monsters they could only assume the Beastmen had brought with them from the north. One was like a huge, one eyed Beastman and stood as big as a manticore, charging up and down the ruined streets and felling houses like they were trees in a wood. Further south than the Cygor, were several Jabberslythe, strange apparitions of limb and talon and fur, and tusked and spined boar the size of Nauglir.

The Beastmen were turning everything to ruin. It was wild, careless destruction, battle simply for the sake of battle.

Whatever Caraoc thought he knew about the coming of Chaos, the three Druchii knew the Beastmen had no plans or goals.

This was simply their way, they despised civilization and sought to burn it down. They wanted to raze Vikarh to the ground.

***

Two hours later, and now on the opposite side of the City, the second trio had just encountered their first taste of the Northmen since returning. There were nine or ten of the wild barbarians in the long street, four or five of them near enough to pose an immediate threat, the others seen only as thick silhouettes behind their braziers and the glint of steel, audible by their loud battle shouts, their voices hoarse and uncouth compared to the sharp, elegant tongue of the Druchii. Casaythe was face to face with the nearest of them, and he jumped backwards as he narrowly avoided losing his head for turning the corner too hastily. The bear of a man was on him in seconds, his warning having only just left his lips to give Elysian and Caraoc the chance to act. The Corsair would have to act quicker though if he wanted to keep his life, and rather than take another step back he let the Marauder step forwards and pull back his axe arm, before sweeping in with an attack the average human could not register before it hit.

Welcome to Vikarh!" hissed Casaythe through clenched teeth, the blade of his glaive embedded in the groin and gut of the human, his leather leggings no protection against keen Druchii steel. His axe never fell, his arm locked in place out to the side of him when his fingers went limp on the handle, and he dropped it and the brazier and looked down in disbelief. Casaythe let him observe the manner of his demise before he kicked him hard in the chest, sending him sprawling backwards to bleed out on the ground. Ironically, the Marauder fell into a pool of his own lantern oil and lashed about and screamed as the fires that crawled up the wall of the corner building leaped out and caressed his naked flesh, searing him agony even as he died from the blow Casaythe had dealt him.

There was no time to celebrate the kill, four more Marauders charged at the Corsair with axes, maces and one with a swinging flail, all bearing a brazier in their off hand along with a small iron buckler. Their weapons and armour were crude, but like the Orcs they had left behind them in the east the men employed them with such strength of arm that it made them a considerable threat. An armed and armoured Druchii warrior could take on three men and win nine times out of ten, but two of the three Druchii had their talents in other areas than brutal melee, and nine Marauders thundered towards them, the four furthest Northmen coming down the road behind the closest five. Outnumbered three to one and not fancying their chances at taking the brutal Marauders on with swords, Elysian and Caraoc had both turned their minds to the Winds of Magic once again.

There was hardly any time to prepare a spell, but both were well practised in throwing out quick spells, and well aware that the effects of such attempts would be fleeting at best. Caraoc reached out to the Wind of Azyr and pulled upon the mundane wind as well as the arcane, just as Elysian summoned up an aura of dread around not himself, a half hidden shadow the Marauders had likely not even seen yet with their crude human eyes, but on Casaythe in front of him. At his arcane command, an aura of dread was summoned up around the Corsair, just as he rammed his glaive through one Northman and dropped him to the floor. Darkness curled about his armour, contorting his shape into something sharp and deadly, a dark helm enclosing his features, painted with the terrifying features of an unknown horror of the abyss. If Casaythe knew what had become of his image he gave no sign, but Caraoc visibly shuddered as he cast out his arms and fanned the flames of the burning building into life.

Casaythe tightened his grip on the glaive, watching as the closest three men came rushing towards him, two more a few steps behind those and another four baying for blood as they followed, weapons already thrusting up into the air in anticipation. He realised even if he fled, it would take some doing to get away from this angry mob. A Druchii might be faster, but the Marauders were already in motion and there was every chance he would just blunder into his companions as he turned the corner behind him. He decided to hold his ground, and carefully assessed the oncoming Northmen as he judged which would reach him first and how they would seek to attack. If he cut up and across, he could disembowel the first and duck under the swing of the flail, and take out the legs of the third. If he came back up and to the right, he would stall the axe the other would no doubt swing for his exposed neck. If he...

The Corsair watched as the face of the nearest Marauder, now only a dozen steps from reaching him, contorted from a cry of bloody rage to a look of shock and horror. His charge faltered, and although he did not turn and flee he half lowered his weapon and his eyes turned to a look of pure dread. Behind him, the flail wielding Marauder and another axeman also slowed and looked upon Casaythe as though he were a Daemon, but the last was so worked up into a bloodthirsty run that he did not falter, screaming wildly as he came ever closer. As the frenzied Marauder came within a few steps of the Corsair and brought his axe up overhead his companions visibly forced the fear from their minds, shaking their heads or stepping forwards with vicious snarls, as if wading through the strong current of a river. Then suddenly there was a hot blast to his right, and Casaythe had to shield his eyes from the fiery flash that followed. Flames burst from windows and the ruined doorway beside the Marauders, as a blast of air sent the flames searing into the Northmen.

Casaythe watched as the frenzied Marauder ran onto his glaive, his long hair and beard ablaze, his attack faltering and making him easy prey for the Corsair.

Behind the dying Northman, the other three humans wailed and rolled about as the flames spread across their scarred and tattooed flesh, burning them alive.

A dozen yards back, the last four Marauders continued to charge, sweeping out to avoid the flames and untouched by the fear that had consumed their kin.

EDIT: derp. How'd I miss that?

IC:

Vryala held fast against the two Greenskin brutes, deflecting their crude but powerful swings with practiced confidence. V was as strong a Druchii as they come, yet she felt quite outmatched in sheer might by both opponents - she couldn't risk going on the offensive, and even on full defense Anarin Sarath she would tire out long before the brutes. She did however manage to cripple one of them enough to create some breathing space.

Her comrades likewise performed admirably, the angered Orc death rattle revealing they had evened the odds. V would do well enough continuing her set tactic, leaving them two-on-one, but wanted to claim a share of personal glory in true Dark Elf style. Phalx had already stolen the limelight, posing elaborately to aggravate the dim-witted foe, and V was both pleased and slightly annoyed to witness its success. No time to dwell; K and she executed a vicious pincer manoeuver that left the street caked with green flesh and foul black blood.

Now the three took a moment to fully appreciate the scene. The Orcs, dangerous as they were, had merely been a vanguard wave for the feral Beast hordes of Chaos. They had fought such foes before, but this time around there were many other creatures supporting them - terrifying in stature, these monstrosities wantonly destroyed buildings and infrastructure with little to oppose them. V cursed under her breath. The Corsairs had misjudged the threat, which could be forgiven - after all, what in the Nine Hells did they know about urban warfare - but she had reckoned Elysian a little wiser than to place his faith in some far-fetched vision, and his support could be well used in suh dire times.

Something had to be done. She noted the Shade had that psychotic look in his eyes again, sizing up a giant, one-eyed, goat-like aberration. It seemed to be tearing up the fabric of Vikarh itself as it rampaged through the block. Old one eye needs to die, he exclaimed, and V simply shrugged. Quite convinced of her impending death, she cared not whence it came, just to meet it with bravery, glory and dignity.

One grenade left! Let's see if we can grab the beastie's attention.

IN THE NORTH

Fire had been powerful. But Caraoc the corsair liked better the usual elements that you encounter at sea.
He had witnessed many tempests, he enjoyed the savage beauty of the fierce elements running amok.
This is what he had in mind when he called for more power against the reamining marauders.
Caraoc's song was a call for violent power, which would shatter the exposed flesh of the humans, and scatter their souls.

"Rain and thunder
and Lightning crumbling
Buildings falling
Hurricanes earth shattering
Membranes scattering
Insane happening
Souls keeps burning
and the Sky keeps plummeting
Now!!!"

That was an easy cast, as the arcane clouds were dark, heavy and low above this part of the city.

Hurricane in the street.

OOC: that song might seem a little bit too powerful. :?
Please consider casting a milder version, toned to match the threat.
I'll try to keep it in mind for a future re-use, this time with full power.

Casaythe coolly observed the northman's demise. As far as glorious deaths went, his was embarrassing. Writing about in flames, the invader eventually stopped kicking, his corpse blackening before his life blood could stain the street.

Four charged forwards to avenge their brother-in-arms, and Casaythe lowered his stance, steadying his weight as he pointed his glaive towards the oncoming enemies. More came behind, and as a gambler, he didn't fancy his odds much.

As the nearest marauder came close, the corsair thrust forwards, punching through him with the razor sharp head of his glaive. Pushing it across to his left, he let the body slide off before turning to give his full attention to the others.

The three charging towards him faltered, and seemed to be filled with terror. "They must have heard of our battle against that daemon." he mistakenly assumed. Thinking they were filled with fear by realising who he was, his confidence was fuelled. A few seconds later, the screaming from the buildings ceased as a hot blast erupted from within. Casaythe shielded his eyes with his left arm, the inferno was so bright. "Caraoc, you genius." he thought with a cruel grin as flames flowed towards the enemy, setting their flesh alight. Two were consumed in fire immediately, another who's beard and clothing were alight ran upon his glaive, his face a mix of terror and rage.

There were four more of the bastards heading towards him, having survived the blast. Filled with confidence, the Druchii swung his glaive about his body in a show of prowess and skill, before beckoning them forwards with a hand gesture and a cocky smirk.

'Found your courage have ya? I've had bigger shits than you!' he mocked crudely.

Doesn't realise that Elysian has cast terror and made him appear frightful. He thinks the enemy has realised he's slain a daemon and are scared by his reputation. Over confidently calling them out. Will fight with his glaive with two hands, ducking, weaving, and jumping to avoid blows where possible.

Phalx leapt and jumped, avoiding any club or stone axe. He was a Druchii, ad more importantly a Shade, as fast a falling rain compared to these muscular brutes. The mad elf was upon a section of stone, hoping over a simple predictable club swing.

He threw his arms up either side, and gave a vicious serpent like hiss. The orcs turned to him, falling under the shadow of his upraised cloak. Phalx wasted no time, but dove down upon one of the green creatures, trusting and knowing his comrades to deal with the other two.

A sadistic cackle broke his lips, as the horn sank into the things heads, down to the base of the itself. His short sword twisted and turned in the mass of orc muscle and guts, just to make sure the horror was truly out of the fight. He deftly sprang back from the cooling body, taking in the vicious scene, painted even worse by the horrid moons light.

This was a paper cut compared to the mortal wound Virkarh was potentially suffering. Beastmen by the hundreds were pouring in. The vicious cows would tear everything down before them, and kill a damn few o themselves in their lust for utter carnage. The huge one eyed brute caught his eye. it might have been an adrenaline fueled twitch, or something more sinister, but his bloody dagger moved upon seeing the thing.

Old one eye needs to die. The Shade said simply.

Phalx wants to carry on with the hunt, aiming for bigger game.

OOC - This is the write up from the Live Chat RPG we held this morning. Only Karonath, Casaythe and Caraoc were taking part, so I was controlling Vryala, Phalx and Elysian.

IC -

In the north, the bodies of the first group of marauders burned on the ground where Caraoc had knocked them down with his spell after they froze in fear at Casaythe, Elysian lending him the aura of terror. There were four marauders left a little further up the street, charging fast towards the three elves. Casaythe stood fast, assuming these men would fear him the way the first lot had, with Caraoc and Elysian a step behind to either side of him. The Shadow Mage was recovering from his augment, but Caraoc managed to summon up the energy of Azyr once again. Just as the four brutal marauders thundered the last few steps towards the group, the rain suddenly pelted down harder and a gale wind blew across the road. Three of the four marauders were sent to the ground, hurled about in mid charge. Only the biggest, toughest looking human waded through the wind storm with gritted teeth, planting his feet one after the other until he was close enough to Casaythe to swing his great axe.

Elysian and Caraoc were quick to spring forward and draw their handbows, and made quick work of ensuring the unarmoured marauders that had been knocked down by the storm winds would not get up again. Elysian put three bolts in one and three bolts in another, as Caraoc let five of the iron projectiles fly into the bare chest of the closest man, who was struggling on the ground to get up and fight back until the last bolt hit his heart. In the time it had taken the Mages to dispatch the downed marauders, Casaythe had already entered single combat with the biggest Northman, ducking the initial swing of the axe with expert agility before ripping his glaive up into the humans' armpit. The blade bit deep into the bulging muscle but failed to sever the limb, and the Corsair was forced to wrench it free and duck another wild swipe of the big axe. At this point Caraoc had snuck in behind the marauder and made to hit him with his staff, but some instinct told the Northman to move and he avoided the attack. Now facing both assailants, the marauder went to strike at Caraoc but the Mage ducked under the swipe, giving Casaythe the opening he needed to step in and finish the last of the humans.

Casaythe growled as he lunged forwards. His glaive punched through the marauders throat, severing through his windpipe and spine. The humans eyes widened as he realised he was a dead man walking. His head slid to one side, a spray of arterial blood pluming upwards. His knees gave way as his head fell from his shoulders and he landed in a crumpled heap before the Corsair.

***

In the east, Karonath stood with Vryala and Phalx in the moment after the last Orc fell and lifted a handful her robes to wipe the dark blood from her magical blade. Vryala likewise was taking a moment to recover, flexing her arms where the bone jarring force of the Orcs in melee had made them tense. With the second Orc skirmish dealt with there was no immediate threat to their survival, although the battle still raged in the distance, and small skirmishes were being fought at every conceivable angle. Before the two ladies could decide where to go and what to fight next however, the ever headstrong Shade made the decision for them. With a mad howl, Phalx charged off to the south in the direction of one of the monsters, causing Vryala to curse under her breath at his restlessness. It was a huge cyclopian giant, which looked much like an overgrown Beastman except for it's face. It was tearing into a small group of mercenaries with it's long claws, stuffing body parts into its ravenous maw with every swipe. As it twisted and turned on the spot, its bulk knocked down the only wall that remained of the building that had stood where the creature now rampaged.

Phalx neared the giant mutant just as it finished off the last of the other small group of Druchii, wincing as he heard the skull crack as the body was decapitated by the Cygors' slavering jaws. He began to shoot at it to gain it's attention, as Vryala and Karonath came up either side of him with their blades ready to meet this new foe. It was almost as big as the Verminlord had been, but they knew this was no daemon, it stank of mutation and decay and the filth of a living monster. As it felt the pinprick bolts and heard the three mercenaries nearing it, the Cygor span around to face them and bellowed hot, rancid breath in their direction from it's overly fang riddled maw. Karonath saw the opportunity this presented, drawing a small throwing knife and taking aim at the monsters one great eye. She threw the blade with expert precision, a throw that even Phalx would be jealous of, and her knife struck the eye and blinded it with a loud wet pop.

Blinded, the Cygor reverted to it's bestial nature and let out a frenzied roar, thundering down on the last seen position of the three mercenaries, swinging it's massive clawed hands low like an ape. It was on them in a matter of seconds.

***

In the north, the three mercenaries had made it past the street previously filled with marauders, and Elysian led them up another and another in the direction of his home. They were past the large houses of the wealthy now, and had come into the Nobles Quarter proper, where each Druchii Lord held a large walled in estate. Each was defended by it's own force, and they walked under the shadow of walls well manned by Druchii guardsmen with pointing crossbows and cold sneers. Clearly they were the reason there were no more marauders this far up, for their bolt ridden bodies riddled every alley where they had tried to get through the maze of high walls and narrow streets. Elysian however seemed to know exactly where he was going, and led the two Corsairs ever northward until they eventually reached a main road. They emerged from a shadowy alley onto the side of the wide road, and looked upon the mighty estate opposite. It's black stone walls were fifteen feet high, and a large iron portcullis defended it's only gateway on this southern edge. The wall beside the gate was marked by a stone icon, of a red dragon clutching onto a thin black spire. It was the sigil of House Blackthorn.

Caraoc and Casaythe recognised the burned faced, hook handed, cold eyed Druchii who stood outside the gate, his sword slick with marauder blood, a dozen more guards out in the street backing him up. He had seen them on the road down from the North Gate, just as they had met Elysian and the other three mercenaries. It was clear that Elysian knew the Guard Captain better, and the Shadowmancer immediately approached the dangerous looking Druchii. The initial conversation was brief, the Corsairs keeping to a respectful distance but able to listen to what was said. Varin Blackthorn, the Mages' employer and his hope for identifying the place in Caraocs' vision, was not at the estate. The highborn had flown north to see why only the unarmoured marauders seemed to be coming into this district, their armour clad Chaos Warrior cousins seeming intent on marching on the opposite side of the City, the Merchants' District in the north east. With no idea who else would be able to help than Sevro, Elysian introduced the Corsairs again and asked Caraoc to explain his vision as best he could to the Guard Captain.

The steps were stone... black stone... wide and curved, creating a half circle around the entrance, overlooked by two great statues of... dark steeds. It was definitely horses, majestic Druchii horses...

The Cygor hit the ground where the three mercenaries had been standing scant seconds after they registered it was coming their way. Both Karonath and Vryala were fast witted and agile enough to move out of the way in time, hurling themselves aside one to the left and one to the right. Phalx on the other hand was brave or foolish enough to take one more shot at the oncoming beast, before darting aside and barely escaping the sweep of its oversized claws. The creature caught his cloak and shredded three great rips through the fabric, narrowly avoiding tearing through the flesh beneath. The Cygor stomped around on the spot for a few moments, and the trio took a moment to realise that it was sniffing at the air and turning it's head this way and that, trying to listen for movement now that it was blind. As one the three mercenaries crept in closer again, Karonath now behind the raging monster, Vryala to the left and Phalx to the right. All three of them got close enough to strike without being detected, and their blades fell as one.

Phalxs' sword struck hard flesh but only skidded across and caused a graze, as Karonath was rewarded not with a spray of blood as she hoped but a severed clump of the monsters mangy fur. Only Vryala spitted the beast as she had intended, ramming her sword up into its ribcage as she stood beneath it's looming form. The rage fuelled creature bellowed and reached down for her, pushing itself further onto her blade and grasping at her with long, needle sharp claws as big as swords. The warrior was again quick enough to roll aside however, taking her blade with her as she made a hasty retreat. Catching onto her footfalls though, the Cygor was right behind her and it stomped after her, Karonath close at it's heels with her Drach once again ready to strike. As the Cygor stomped and grasped after Vryala, Karonath once again made to sever it's spine, but despite this time meeting flesh her blade failed to do any significant damage to the howling monster. Fortunately for them though Phalx was at hand, and just as the creature backed Vryala into the corner of a broken wall, he opened up with Deathspitter taking direct aim at the back of the monsters skull.

In a show of marksmanship that was good even for him, perhaps to show K that he still had it after her impressive throw, Phalx delivered over ten bolts straight to the back of the Cygors' brain. It's skull blew out in shards of white bone, and it toppled lifelessly to the ground where Vryala cut it's throat to ensure it was dead.

Sevro nodded, stroking his chin thoughtfully with his hook as he listened to what Caraoc said he had glimpsed in his vision, before giving his reply.
"I think I know where you mean. The rearing dark steed is the sigil of House Tvar, just as this is ours."
He tapped his sword on the dragon on the wall before continuing,
"As you know Elysian, the Tvar were a family of merchant artefact traders and collectors, and they have been for generation after generation. They're all dead now of course, the last three children of the line having settled here in Vikarh. The brothers your comrades killed the day I met them, the only sister we of course struggled against for much longer, for she was a dreadful bride of the night."
At the mention of the Vampire, Elysian visibly shuddered. Caraoc and Casaythe caught on to what Sevro meant, and looked at each other in surprise, awe and fear. Sevro paused a moment before he continued what he had been saying, as if he too had sensed the tension in the air at the mention of such a dark creature so casually, but he did not flinch or shiver.

"The Tvar family may be gone, but their legacy lives on. Many of Vikarhs' finest artefacts were obtained and brought here by the family, indeed I believe Fiat carries one such work of magical art upon his brow."
They realised Sevro didn't know of Fiat and Saldrimeks' demise, clearly assuming the two warriors were with the others in the south east. There was no time to tell him though as he carried on,
"When House Tvar was ransacked by the Khainites and City Guard, the great trophy room was emptied, most of the artefacts taken to the Temple of Khaine or the great libraries, and other, hidden, darker places. There was however a second location where the family kept some of their greatest findings, part way between House Tvar and the Tvar Crypt in the far north. This building is a small private library, and matches your description, wide curving steps and two statues of rearing dark horses. It was always well defended by the Zukhil Guard so I have never entered, but I know where it is located. I thought the Drachs' agents emptied it of all it's artefacts too however, it has been empty and dormant these past months as far as I know."

Elysian nodded his thanks, and Sevro pointed them in the direction of this building. They would have to head east, cross the main north road, and head towards the ruins of House Tvar, before cutting north where they would pass it. Empty or not, Caraocs' vision clearly pointed them to this place.

IN THE NORTH

After the fight against the berserk humans, Elysian had led the trio towards a castle.
House Blackthorn. A red dragon clutching onto a thin black spire. That was the mercenaries' barracks.
The Guard Captain that they had seen once, marching fearlessly towards a formidable threat, was there, guarding the premices. Sevro was his name.
He did not question the validity of Caraoc's vision.
Indeed, it appeared to be quite an accurate description of some real building.

Caraoc had never been to that part of Vikarh.
So that was a real vision?
It came both at a relief and at a shock to Caraoc. He had never been a seer before. Did he have a gift? Or did he become the puppet of a God?

Then Sevro told the trio about a dreadful bride of the night. A vampire, that had poisoned this part of the city quite recently.
That was more than Caraoc could hear.
Pffff nooo... a vampire. There are vampires in this city.
He recalled the descriptions he had heard sometimes, when they were raiding deep south in the Empire.
"Tongue Snake - Venom Teeth - Fatal Poison - Key To Seventh Gate
Powerful Look - Sharp Eyes - Hypnotizing - Spell Of Death
Claws Of Steel - Weapons By Nature - Ready To Strike - Weak Prey
Beast By The Nature - Able To Think And Plan"

He could imagine the beast staring at him, calling him with a gastly voice:
"Be My Prey - Let Me Hunt - Hunt For Your Blood - To Suck It From Your Veins - Vampire! Vampire!
I Suck Your Blood - I Rip Your Heart Out - I Eat Your Soul - I Leave Your Corpse - To Be Rotten... To Be Eaten By Ghouls.."

Caraoc was no longer in that much a hurry to discover what was going on there.

Granting the condemned a last meal was a well established tradition in many places and Caraoc was eager to respect all traditions.
Can't we get some dinner before we go any further? I'm starving and my legs barely support me.
Despite his deep reluctance to find out what was true about vampires, he knew well that the trio would have to go and investigate that place he had described without seeing it.

Asking to givim' a break. But will - reluctantly - proceed on.
