So the situation is this. I accidently poured wine on my laptop and now it won't start up. I have some small hope it might dry out but it hasn't yet and I am not geting my hopes up. Probobly I will have to get it fixed or get a new computer both of which obviously take time and money. The long and short of it being a mod post will be delayed.

No problem, I think most of us have done that at one point or another.

I know this sounds daft but if you have nothing to lose re the laptop you could try leaving it in a big bag full of rice, this is supposed to draw out the moisture. I also fixed my mobile phone by taking it apart as far as it would go and drying all the bits in a very, very low oven, but again this would be a 'I have nothing to lose, may as well toast the laptop' situation. It needs to be as cold as it can while still being on - don't use the lowest number setting (it needs to be lower)!

I say we can go with the current plan when you have internet again, and I'm sorry to hear about your laptop woes.

I've just had the fun of blue screen followed by BAD_POOL_HEADER.
Thank god for a bootable ubuntu USB.
Any of you come across that boot error before?

I haven't seen that one. That does not sound fun.

I'm often tempted to try something that's not Windows, but I haven't yet ... things like this are an incentive to, I'll admit.

If you're willing to try something different, I would recommend Ubuntu. I've had the pleasantry of dealing with multiple installments of the OS during my short education for IT specialist. And no, Cananatra, I have not. In all honesty, I haven't even heard of it's existence.

I personally still vow by Windows 7, though I might install the Ultimate Edition(mind if I say Illegally) in due time, professional is kind-of boring for me. And I have a mind for trying Windows 8, see if that's decent enough to meet my requirements.

I only have this Ubuntu USB to bypass windows security on my students who lock themselves out of their PC's (I volunteer teaching the elderly how to use computers). Just useful to have. Mostly I use Vista on my machine, however it seems to have died.

Windows 8 is garbage, stick with 7. Half the stuff that runs native on 8 isnt even compatable with stuff on the market. Just last week I had to download a whole swath of older programmes for a student and set them for priority use just to get 8 to talk to a bloody printer.

And we're off to wait for Windows 9... He's right. It's like a selfish celebrity, beautiful on the outside, absolute shiz on the inside.

So I quick update just to make sure you don't think I have forgotten you. After the first cleaning there was still residue on the computer so they are cleaning it again. Expectations of news have been pushed back to tomorrow.

It turns out that the mother board is beyond repair and since a new one is getting on for the price of the laptop and Acer don't even have replacement mother boards for this model at the moment that means I am going to buy a new laptop.

If any of you more computer literate people can recommend a relatively cheep (£4-500) gaming laptop I would be interested to know.

yeah...unfortunately water damages are pretty bad since it'll cause a lot of shortings around the place.

In future if you water damage an electronic device, you can soak it in pure alcohol, or methyl can also help. The alcohol helps absorb the water from the device.

That needs to be done relatively quickly and hopefully parts have not been shorted!

Sadly I don't, not in the market for one of those until I get a better job! But I'd be interested to know if anyone does so I know what to save up for

It all depends on the purpose. If you're like me, and want to play games on a diehard level, look for a Acer laptop. If you want it well balanced out, go for an Asus. By my opinion it's all about what you want and what it can provide in your priceclass. I want a gaming laptop, so I buy one with a good graphics card.

It's all up to personal taste.

That's something I would second, actually - go for the best graphics card you can get on your price range; that's the part that seems to get superseded the fastest.

Well, mine is three years old, and the graphics card is still quite sufficient to play the heavier games on low. And it was a mid tier gaming rig when I bought it.

Well I have finally replaced my laptop (a Lenovo Z500 if you are interested) but will be going home for Christmas with all the family activities that entails. I will have computer access but don't expect anything until after boxing day, then we can get moving again.
