"Are you insane?" Asilah yelled at Nathra as the tip of High Elf Commander's sword struck the stone wall, chipping flakes of marble outwards. Only moments before Asilah had been stood directly in line of the thrust, but had twisted away at the last second. She kicked out at the stone pedestal upon which the glowing orb was mounted and toppled it towards the Asur hero. The marble stand crashed down, the orb rolled from it with a dull thud. The glowing yellow gave way to an angry swirl of orange and red as it rolled across the room and clattered down the stairs. Using the distraction, the Khainite swiped at the Commander's legs with her sword.

The two were moving around the room in a ferocious dance. Beads of sweat formed on the Khainite's brow, yet the Commander seemed cool and unfazed by her efforts. Her sword struck ithilmar shin plates, and he looked at her almost with pity before thrusting at her again with his rune marked blade.

Nathra - Trying to keep this going for you :)

OOC: Wow! That was quick

IC: "Am I insane?" Nathra repeated the question with an amused smirk. "You appear to be a trifle distressed." The khainite only barely dodged the commanders next attack, his sword scattered flakes of marble like confetti over the females sweaty features. The Druchii's next attack was one Nathra likely would have done in the same situation, she scored a solid blow but the swing bounced harmlessly off armour. Weak points, my dear. Go for the throat. It was entirely probable that his armour was enchanted, but a skilled fighter knew to always aim for flesh, or were the armour was weakest if no flesh was available.

Curiously, the strange orb, once a tranquil yellow, flashed angry reds and oranges as it toppled to the floor and rolled out the room, the shade listened to it Boing down the stairs - it seemed important, Nathra made a mental note to retrieve it when the fight was won.

Rune-etched sword, enchanted armour, extremely skilled, fine reflexes. Is this ostentatious or are you someone of true importance? They continued their dance. The noble shade expected the commander to show some small signs of weariness, but he still seemed supremely confident and not at all worried about his predicament. Overconfident, too... How will you fare against both of us, I wonder?

Nathra will search for the glowing Orb after the fight - seems important - as well as the usual looting.

The shade is ready to jump in but will wish to time it correctly - if she can stop the Asur from killing the khainite it would mean she would owe Nathra a favour in return (bit of warped logic there, but it is Asilah's own fault she's in this mess, lol)

You heard him, you, you and you, grab your troops and with me!, he barked at the nearest elves of minor rank loitering nearby. He quickly instructed them to form a boxed guard around the command group, spearing a path towards the granary. Inside the wall of sword and spears, he place those armed with missiles to help cover from the harassment of the eagles. He found that the thin wall surrounding the general would buckle at any moment and he continuously place himself in amongst the thick of it at various moments when he felt an area was near weakening. Time was passing in a blur as he raced about, desperately trying to hold the guard around the general, the granary's shelter achingly close. This passage had better be there, he thought to himself.

He began wondering where on earth the sorceresses were as he noticed a distinct lack of witchfire dealing with the eagles. He looked back to see some random acolyte carrying an elfish staff, clearly of some magical import and the sorceresses seemingly preoccupied with speaking to him. They began toying with him with their magics and he spat into the ground in disgust at their idiocy. We're barely surviving here and they want to play games!? I hope the Lord General flays them into a wizard's cloak.... He then blinked suddenly as they were washed up in a cloud of acid. He cursed as their skeletons hit the ground. He cursed louder when he realized that the hydra had fallen and the gate still stood, effectively ending the battle as it was.

He sprung into action with a newfound urgency. He knew they weren't heading to the granary for shelter any more, but for survival. A nearby sergeant looked at him, noticing his cursing. Damn your eyes! Back to the line. Organize your strikes! We must get to the granary!, he shouted. And he was back into to it once again. Stabbing, ordering, maiming, shouting, eviscerating, reorganizing, striking and encouraging. He was a flurry of movement and manoeuvre and none of it was to save the great lord thaeken, military genius. He just wanted to live to see the next day, and these wrecks were the only dispensable resource at hand to ensure that happened.

Get to the chop... granary!

Venarl could not quite believe what had happened to him. He faced odds that were sure to lead to his death, and yet somehow he had still lived victorious against the sorceresses that he had dared to defy. The death of the Hydra was a dire omen despite aiding him endeavour. Venarl looked down towards the staff wondering if ancient spirits were bound within it, perhaps they were protecting him but why he wondered. As he surveyed the battle field images of a dark daemon shrouded in mist invaded his mind. Behind him a swirling vortex of magical energy swirled leading a path to a gaping black hole. He had heard tales of such a spell, the last resting place of countless souls of the black horror spell. He felt an equal measure of dread and fear, his heart felt compelled to attempt to unleash the spell, yet his mind pondered on whether he too would be delivered to its dark void.

Fighting the temptation that rippled through his heart he sought to test his new found skills and held his staff high into the air closing his eyes. His arm began to shake more violently as if its weight had suddenly grown beyond all proportion. He surrendered every ounce of concentration, all his strength to keep the staff held high as he imagined an emerald bolt of lightning thundering into the air toward the beasts that plagued the air. The staff seemed to respond to his minds call yet Venarl was almost to terrified to open his eyes to see how the staff would respond…

Asilah was on the back foot but she was damned if she was going to ask for help. If the Commander killed her, then Nathra would be quick to follow her to the darkness. Together they might have had a chance, but like this... The Commander's sword flashed before her and she jarred her head to the side as the edge of his blade cut a neat red line along her cheek. She thrust back with her own sword and dropped low before rolling past him and swiping at the back of his legs with her dagger before returning to guard. The Commander turned and raised his sword, bringing it down again and again, which Asilah responded to with parries from her own blade. Her reflexes were slowing. He was wearing her down.

A thick cloud of arrows rained down on the Druchii forces. The casualties were growing with an onslaught from the air and the Outer Gate closing down on the surprised troops. Here and there an eagle would crash into the battlefield, but it was clear that there would be no recovery for the Druchii host. Kirael stayed close to the Command Group, slashing at any Asur warrior that came too close. His keen eyes and lightning reflexes were a welcome addition to the retreat. Snatching an arrow out of the air before it hit Cade between the eyes, he stared at the Standard Bearer. "Keep the General safe. Once we're inside the Granary I'll hold them back. Just get him out of here."

Cade had been roaring out orders, but the words of this mere shade made sense. If the General fell, all would be in vain. The door to the Granary was only a few steps ahead now. Up a short flight of steps it was raised from the level of the road between the Inner and Outer Griffon Gates. The door to the store was a wide arch shape and made of wood. It appeared to be a set that opened in the middle, wide enough for the cargo of a cart to be unloaded. Cade hoped that it was open.

Filled with awe of the power that he now wielded, Venarl had decided to try the magical staff once again. It seemed though that the powers he wished to master were not complying. The staff burned and sent a sensation through his body as if he were receiving a shock. It took all of his focus not to drop it. Snapped form his reverie by the calls of Cade to head to the Granary, he realised the peril he was in. Hundreds of Asur were charging in to the Druchii warriors. The hated Shadow Warriors were slaughtering the walking wounded and showering death upon the host with their black fletched arrows. If he died this day, he would never learn how to master the gift he had received here.

MG – Noted! Asilah's struggling. Fatigue is kicking in. She won't last much longer.

JC – Kirael's going to help hold the enemy back for the retreat into the Granary. Get the General to safety!

Raven – Bad luck, the spell miscast. This will happen a lot whilst you're a "newbie" to the dark arts. Don't worry, as the story progresses, you'll get a chance to improve and the odds of having a good cast will increase in your favour. Please head to the Granary with Cade.

The khainite woman was slowly being killed, she was struggling even to parry basic attacks and she was sweating profusely. By comparison, the Asur commander barely looked out of breath, he could have been daydreaming or having a pleasant stroll on the park, it certainly didn't appear that he was getting much exercise. Quick as pouncing cat, he struck again, scoring a bright red gash across the khainites cheek. She rolled away with a futile attack at the Asur's legs then her guard came up as he continued his assault.

This has gone on long enough! Nathra, fresh, launched herself over the table, her sword flashed out to catch his latest swing at his near-defeated opponent. The shade parried and pushed his blade, hard, away from both of the Druchii, she then barreled into his side with her shoulder to push him away and off-balance him. This would give the khainite some breathing room to recover, while Nathra unleashed her own assault at the Commander as he regained his posture - something which Nathra would not let him do.

Nathra will attempt to catch the Commanders blade as he swings for Asilah again, she will then push both blade and Asur away to give Asilah room to recover. If successful, Nathra will start with a sweep to trip him or further hinder his recovery, then she'll attack him at one of his vulnerable points.

Just a few steps..., Gaelus thought Just a few. The last few moments of the battle had been a blur. Not too long ago they had been perched on victory, the second gate being battered down. In the moments that passed after everthing went to hell, he had transversed nearly have the battle field twice over, tried to organize an escort while all this time fighting for his life. He could feel the tendrils of exhaustion starting to worked their way through his muscles and lungs.

He called out to the front ranks, Forward! Secure those doors!. He then turned to the command group, Come, let's get you inside. Then you can try to figure out how we get out of this shitstorm., he thought. He knew that if he didn't like whatever plan the Lord General had thought up, he could always just go his own way. The general's power was greatly diminished and his only likely course of action now would be about saving his own hide. Gaelus wondered if his hide would be save along with the generals, preferably still attached to his body.

Some random shade had barked some obvious notion about getting the general to safety and that he'd protect the rear. As if he wanted some recognition to the glory of such duty. He could have it, or rather try to have it. Unfortunately for him, his face and name had already started to disappear into anonymity in Gaelus's mind.

Escorting the general up the steps and inside

Venarl could almost smell fear in the air as the tide of fate had washed against the Druchii forces. Enraged that he could not summon his own magical force the elf starred down at the staff for a split second he was sure he could see a face with a mocking smile. Glancing up at the charging Asur force he thought it wise to heed the words of a fellow Druchii shade who was ushering every dark elf towards the granary. It was strange to see a shade be so considerate for others well-being, he didn’t know if that was indeed a blessing or more cause for concern.

Running as fast as his fatigued body could carried him he charged forward towards their last hope of sanctuary, in that moment Venarl wondered if his life was nearing its last chapter and wondered whether he was treading on a path that hundred fallen Druchii had already walked.

Nathra's decision to join the fight was welcomed by Asilah. Her arms felt like lead, whilst the High Elf Commander showed no signs of tiring. The shade rolled and barged, tipping the Asur and catching him by surprise. Asilah made the most of the distraction with a strike to the gap between armour at the Commander's groin. Thrusting her sword up, the Asur turned sharply and kicked at her before bringing his sword crashing down.

Asilah screamed as the enchanted blade bit through her left arm, severing her hand. Her sword clattered to the floor, and still clutching her dagger, she scuttled back, the shock of the attack reeling through her. The Commander glanced at the pale hand on the floor, and then darted forwards for the kill.

Clearly he had underestimated the Druchii. Nathra swooped forwards with cold rage, her sword slamming into the Commander behind his knees. With no armour, her blade's edge severed tendons and the Commander tumbled forwards with a surprised yell. All the grace of his training could not save him from the punishing barrage he was about to suffer.

On the battlefield, the onslaught from the skies was not ending. With almost a playful manner, the eagles were swooping down and picking Druchii up before tearing them in pieces or dropping them from great heights to their deaths. Twice Venarl had to swipe at clutching claws with his glaive, and Cade's beloved standard was grabbed by a great bird. The chains still bound to shackles around his wrists, he feared he too was doomed as he felt himself begin to be lifted up. The bird's large eyes met his gaze, but an unknown comrade thrust a spear through it's chest. The eagle released its grip and took to the air with the weapon still stuck in it's breast. Venarl turned to the Standard Bearer and brought his glaive down through the chains binding him, to free Cade.

As Cade reached the steps and the doorway, he found that the bar of the standard would not pass through. There was no use trying to carry it down a hidden passage. The General watched, his face twisted with dismay and anger at the whole situation, as Cade left the standard outside whilst the Command Group backed their way in. The battle was lost.

MG - Time for the coup de grâce

JC/Venarl - I've godmoded things a little bit - Cade was literally chained to the iron standard pole so we had to get him free somehow!

((OOC - guys, there's a bit of a lag between scenes I'm afraid. Need to get Nathra out of the tower and somewhere near you lot before I can post anything more in depth about the retreat. I'll try to push this through during the course of this week))

Just as soon as it had begun the fight had finished. The khainite let loose a wild scream as the commanders weapon tore through her wrist. Nathra took advantage of the opportunity to strike where the commanders armour was weak and he tumbled to the ground, his legs unable to carry his weight. The shade quickly pounced on his back and pinned him in place, she took one of the daggers from her sword-belt and surreptitiously began to sever the tendons of his joints: knees and elbows, thighs and shoulders. Unable to move, the commander would bleed to death... eventually.

The shade looked across at the khainite girl, her predatory face bearing an expression of sympathy. Poor girl. How many more friends must I lose before this is over. She will hate me for this, though it was her own doing, ultimately. Maybe I should kill her, too, it would be a mercy.

"The commander lives, though he will bleed to death. Finish him, if you can." The commander was Nathra's prey, the khainite woman had intervened and had paid the price. Still, Nathra could not completely dissolve the feelings of guilt. She cleared her head with a shake, to better concentrate on more immediate concerns. She had to loot this place, as thoroughly and hastily as possible and return to the army before it was routed completely.

Woohoo! Loot time, at last! Nathra will loot the ball that escaped and anything else from the office that's noteworthy. She will leave the commanders stuff alone for Asilah to pick as she pleases (Nathra has her own runed-blade, though it's power is still latent and she doesn't wear armour (well, except for some blackened leather pieces that she has yet to acquire). She's still in the 'practically naked' stage, hehe).

After looting, she will accompany Asilah and head to where General Thaeken might be situated, maybe a look through the window might tell her where she needs to go.

Gaelus rubbed his wrist where the chains once rubbed his skin raw. He faced the elf that had broken them My thanks friend. I think we'd best both get inside no?. He spoke quickly and moved to go into the mill. Seeing that the standard wouldnt fit, he planted it as a rallying point for the remainder of the army. The old lord blood-drinker isnt going to be happy with this. Damn him though, this battle is his folly . He started towards the door and then hesitated.

Where are my manners, he said turning back to the standard. Come along old friend, he spoke as he ripped the shredded skin of the elven mage prince from its shackles. You and me are gonna see the world! I bet you'd look most excellent stretched across my armor.

He entered the building. Many were milling about, unsure of their next moves. He quickly spotted the command group and headed towards them. The sooner they entered this passage the better. He didn't fancy spending his last moments pushing flour.

Gaelus will grab the mage skin and enter the building, seeking out the command group

Venarl gave a weak smile in response to the Elf thanks who had freed from the standard bearer and moved purposively towards the mill. As he reached the mill from the corner of his eye he saw the elf struggling with the standard bearer. Hiding the staff underneath his cloak he had not felt any reaction from it since his last failed attempt at wielding it. But for some reason he felt a tinge of vibration from it. He turned to see the elf tear the horrid skin from the standard bearer as his eyes drifted towards the remains of the fallen warrior, the staff seemed to react even more. Venarl pondered for a moment.

Perhaps I should look into this more? I can’t let this elf out of my sight.

As the elf walked past him Venarl reached out a hand placing it on his shoulder

“A moment my comrade, may I be so bold in asking for your assistance? It would seem fate has brought us together, this battle has drained me greatly I fear that my enemies may draw around me I think it would be wise for me to find allies, or indeed wise for us both”
Venarl wrapped his cloak tight around him in an attempt to hide the staff from view.

Venarl wil attempt to befriend Gaelues so he can monitor the strange reaction between the staff and the mages skin.[/i]

The Commander had expected some hateful remark, or savage death blow. Yet Nathra gave him neither, nor did she grant him an honourable death. Instead she disabled him in a manner he had never imagined possible. Lying on the floor like an unstringed puppet, his breathing laboured as his blood pooled across the floor. With defiant eyes, he glared at Asilah. Not one to beg for mercy, he instead insulted her and Nathra with his last words. "Poor fools. You are naught but slaves to your dark master... I forgive you."

Asilah snarled and hacked his head clean off with sawing actions from her long dagger, before dropping it and clutching at the stump where her left hand had been. Shakily getting to her feet, she looked to Nathra. "Pompous bastard. Let's get out of here."

Nathra was in no particular hurry. Rummaging around the room, she smiled to herself as she found a gold tiara with a red gem at its centre. Although not necessarily to her taste, it would certainly get a good price back home. She also found herself a pair of ithilmar arm guards and shin plates. Finally done, she remembered the orb that had rolled out of the room and down the stairs. But would she fetch that too?

Asilah shook her head and stumbled past Nathra and down the stairs. If she made it back to the Druchii host, a trip to the chirugeon was in order.

Cade and Venarl had now entered the granary building, with the warrior taking a grim trophy from his time as Standard Bearer. Whilst the last of the nearest Druchii piled in, the shade who had spoken to them moments ago was busy hacking and slicing at any Asur that tried to gain access. "Hurry!" he shouted, slashing a blade across the throat of an elf who gargled a shriek in return. Venarl had introduced himself, cautiously hiding his prized staff.

Briefly looking around the dim room, boxes of goods and barrels of wine were neatly stored alongside shelves of bread, cheeses and dried meets. Were they cornered? Was the information gained false, a trap like this entire battle had been? Where was this entry? Cade stared coldly at the Druchii who had offered friendship. "I suppose you'll try to stab me in the back as soon as I am no longer useful. Prove yourself worthy of my allegiance. Find that damn door."

Venarl watched as a few of his fellow Druchii rummaged through the various crates and hidden places of the room, all in the hope of finding some hidden treasure to steal away from their hated enemy. Venarl was strangely comforted by the idea that he had no need to hunt for items of treasured value, his staff was all the treasure he needed, all he required now was the knowledge to use it.

The young elfs thoughts quickly turned to the here and now, if they were to survive it was not treasure they needed but food. As he slowly walked past nearby creates for something suitable to take he also scanned for any signs of the elusive trap door that was eluding them all. As he walked a few steps his eyes drifted on a conveniently packed bag of food supplies. Taking it and swinging it over his bag he instantly regretted the decision, it felt like he had been reduced to slave labour, perhaps this was the cost of their failure?

As he continued to move about the room, the Druchii around him had begun to get more and more frustrated in their efforts to locate their exit. Moving aside crates and barrels, Venarl sank to his knees searching the stone. In the relatively dim light it was hard to see but eventually his hand wandered over a large crack in the stone. A small ray of light shone through, perhaps the door was hidden behind the wall itself? The elf turned to those around him asking for those who held stronger weapons.

Venarl will ask for the aid of the other Druchii and suggest breaking down to stone to hopefully unveil the secret door.

Nathra wasted no time and dashed down the stairs from the blood soaked room. Asilah followed, her steps shaky, as she gripped the stump of her severed hand in an attempt to staunch the bleeding. This was no time for heroics. The elf had compromised herself and would hinder the escape. Nathra's instincts were tuned to survival. If Asilah slowed her down, she'd kill her herself.

The wall of the tower began to glow, and as she reached the lower floor, it was obvious that it was the Asur Commander's orb that was the source of light. It looked to be made from solid crystal of some sort, with fiery swirls rolling within it. Crouching to pick it up, Nathra was surprised by how light it was. Barely heavier than her sword, she scooped it up, then looked around her for an escape route. On the landing was a window, with no hinge, but it looked like the leaded glass might give if enough force was used. Still, it was a long way down, but she had to get back to the Command Group in a hurry, if they still lived. Two more floors were below her, and from there the wide battlement that straddled the Outer Gate rose from the pass. She remembered the long climb up, and knew that there would be no easy answer.

Asilah reached the landing, her pale skin grey. "Do you hear that?" she asked, her voice barely more than a whisper. Footsteps were racing from below.

In the Granary, Venarl had loaded himself up with provisions. In an unusual display of thoughtfulness, the Druchii had taken a sack from the stores. It is likely that this was not an act of generosity, more that he was more likely to survive himself if the others were kept alive. He hadn't had time to inspect the contents yet. With arrows whizzing into the stores, and a fierce fight on the doorway, they needed to find that passage and fast!

It didn't appear to be beneath the flags, but he noticed a line along the stone wall. A stack of crates hid most of it, but after closer investigation, it did seem to be a door shape of sorts. But how to get it open? He traced the edge, calling for help to open it.

MG - Fight or flight, or both! If you end up jumping, don't worry, I have something prepared so Nathra doesn't die.

+ 1 Asur orb

Raven - Doorway found!

+ 1 sack of provisions containing; 2 kilograms of dried meat, 1 large cheese, herb pouch, 5 large dried sausages, 1 kilogram of salt

All who are in the Granary, clear those crates and try to get that door open.

"Poor fools. You are naught but slaves to your dark master... I forgive you." The commander croaked with dying breath, words that were ultimately pointless, for Nathra had no masters other than destiny and fate. "And I forgive you," the shade said under her breath, so that the khainite girl wouldn't hear. An easy thing, to forgive the dead.

Swiftly, the noble-born searched the room. Among various interesting but useless items the shade found a gold tiara - a perfect fit. Though it looked valuable and exquisitely made, it was far too ostentatious for Nathra's liking and she would never wear it. She clipped it into her sword belt. A further rummage of the room yielded a set of shining shin plates and a set of armguards. These, too, were not to Nathra's taste, the metal was far too shiny and all good rogues know that shiny things attract attention. A quick tumble through the mud would soon tarnish their splendor.

Though that was not the extent of the shade's search - there was still the strange orb to retrieve. She dashed out of the room and flung herself down the stairs, as she descended upon the room below a wavy, hazy visage, like the reflection of sunlight glinting off water, danced across the wall and Nathra stopped in wonderment, briefly. The orb was aglow with infernal light, and as she looked into it's depths a chill shiver sparked it's way down her spine; she got the distinct feeling that the orb was staring right back at her. Shaking her head, the shade looked for somewhere to place the orb and realised she had nothing to carry it in, but the orb was clearly of some importance to these Asur and could be valuable in the right hands. Nathra would simply have to carry it the old-fashioned way, despite the fact it made her feel uncomfortable.

The raven-haired beauty followed Asilah down the spiral steps, for while she stopped to pick up the orb her beleaguered but temporary ally had overtaken her. Nathra was amazed that the khainite hadn't turned to vent her anger or frustration on her, for the girl must surely blame Nathra for the loss of her hand, and for the events that lead to it. Thankfully, it seemed this was not the time for vengeance, but when, if it came, Nathra would be ready. Reasons are plentiful for me to kill you, khainite, what revenge do you plan against me?

"Do you hear that?" The young acolyte shattered the train of Nathra's thoughts as she skidded to a halt. She could hear footsteps but they were too muted to determine the number of people they belonged too, more than one, Nathra was sure of that. A sudden but inexplicable idea came to the shade then. Asilah might be a problem for her in the near or distant future, and the woman was already injured beyond what Nathra would deem acceptable.

"Get ready for a fight!" Nathra said, her voice firm and harsh as she glanced out the window. Sword in hand, Nathra made to follow the khainite girl as she lead the way downstairs, though Nathra had no intention of following her. It wasn't far to the courtyard which was only a two story jump, the biggest problem would be getting back to ground level and ultimately, back to the army - or what was left of it. But one problem at a time, the shade jumped...

Nathra will jump. She's tried to get rid of Asilah by making her go and fight the guards herself and hopefully die in the process. Her intention is to get back to General Thaeken ASAP.

Damn, we're in a tight spot!, Gaelus thought as he rushed through the granary doors. All about the generals close guard were doing their best to board up the walls, for all they knew, for a last stand. Arrows whizzed through here and there. The odd druchii felled, caught unawares by their presence. He looked about and saw the curious mage milling aroung the flour sacks.

Damn, we're in a tight spot!!, he looked over at the general's retinue. Genuine fear could be seen in the general's eyes. Gaelus wasn't sure if it was because of their predicament or what should happen to the general should they escape and he make it back to Naggaroth with such a dramatic failure over his head. The witch king would not be pleased. Not pleased at all. Gaelus made a note that perhaps it would be best never to mention him ever being on this expedition. Perhaps, even remaking himself once again. He'd done it before easily enough.

Damn, we're in a tight spot!!!. An arrow whizzed by his head. He croutched low to approach the adept. Tell me there's a back entrance to this place. I'm not too keen on being the local elf lords next batch of summer loaf. he said. He saw the mage's eyes turn toward the wall with some crates. There seemed to be a fine crack running along it. He was surprised his keen eyes could spot it though the craftmanship must have been poor and old. To a dwarf, it must have appeared an eyesore.

He rushed over to clear the crates. Give us a hand with this will you?. Clearing the crates, he inspected the fault in the wall.

Will attempt to help find the passage with the mage

As Venarl continues to throw aside creates he was pleased to find others coming to his aid giving a nod of gratitude to those around him. His thoughts led once again to his staff, this was a desperate situation and time was of the essence. The young elf pondered on the outcome of the use of magic. With one small blast the wall would be mere dust, and the way made clear to continue their escape. Yet the dire thought of it failing once again could be equally as disastrous. With all of the Druchii packed into such a small room drawing upon the winds could make a lot of pain.

A thought swept through his mind, perhaps he was thinking about this in the wrong way. Perhaps he should not hide his gift like he had been doing thus far. If he were to truly master the art of winds of magic he needed to be less deceptive. Perhaps he should seek the counsel of those around him? No that would be folly he thought. No one trusts a mage, especially one that cannot even control the his own craft. This was not the time for discussion this was the time for action. Laying down the provisions he acquired nearby he took out his staff once more taking a few steps away from the wall. Setting his mind to pure cocnetration he willed the staff to respond picturing the wall erupting before his very eyes.

Venarl will attempt to clear the wall through magic.

Chapter 2 - Rounding up Post

General Thaekan grunted as a black fletched arrow found it's mark through a gap in his armour. Gritting his teeth, he grasped the shaft and yanked it free from his shoulder. Two more arrows whizzed by, and a third ricocheted off the back of his helm as he and a handful of panicked survivors hurried to find their way to their only hope of escape.

Just a few hours ago it had seemed that the might of the Dark Elves was without rival. Having crushed their foes in the Shadowlands, the host had marched south west to the Griffon Gate. Fell magic and a battle hydra were at their disposal. Whilst shades climbed the great walls to either side of the gateway and tore through the gate's defences, the main body of the army smashed through the outer gate and into the garrisoned citadel beyond. The strategy was to slaughter their weak kin, and then break through the second gate to the Inner Kingdom of Ellyrion. It had become apparent that the Asur had a strategy of their own.

"It was all an elaborate trap..." Thaekan whispered in realisation, turning to his standard bearer, Cade. The warrior, still clutching the tattered hide of the High Elf Mage slain in the Shadowlands narrowed his eyes questioningly as Thaekan added, "I should have realised they were holding back reserved. Why else would we be allowed to pass through the Shadowlands so easily? Where were those bastard kin of Anar? Here! Lurking in the crags and gullies, biding their time whilst we marched right into their merry little net." He hissed, his eyes wide with anger.

At the back of the granary, Venarl had found a well hidden doorway. Behind a stack of crates, a powdery outline could be seen, the stonework loose. As three soldiers tried levering them loose with their swords, Venarl glanced at his newly acquired Asur staff and took a step backwards. "Stand clear, I will blast through it." As he whispered his intent, the air took on the smell of tin, and a stillness filled the room.

Kirael bravely stood at the doorway to the granary, opening throats whenever an enemy got too close. Great Eagles swooped from overhead, taking up Druchii in their talons, and depositing their broken bodies across the battlefield before they circled again for their next attack. "Get inside!" He yelled over the din of the fight, hoping that the map he had found was indeed genuine, and there was indeed a way through the mountains from this building. If not, he would be rounding up the last of his surviving kin, like cattle in a slaughterhouse.

The air was thick with arrows, and it had been only through his reflexes and a great deal of luck, that none had struck him so far. The enemy was getting too close now for him to hold them off; the gap around the granary door shrinking until the High Elves were just over a spear's length away. About to duck into the building himself, he noticed to his right, a figure tearing through the distracted ranks of the enemy. Was it a harpy come to feast on the dead? He allowed himself a moment to focus more fully on the individual, and frowned with curiosity at a glowing object being carried. The figure drew closer, slashing at any that got in her way, bounding and leaping over the backs of the slower armoured warriors. It was a female, and a Druchii at that. Kirael called out to her as he lunged at the elves closest to him, "Hurry, this way!"

As she leaped through the gap and behind Kirael, into the granary, there was an almighty explosion, and Kirael's world went black.

Chapter 3 - Darkness Awaits

As the staff in Venarl's hands discharged a massive blast, there was a flash that blinded all within the granary, followed by a shuddering explosion and a howling through the air. Some had the sense to duck and protect themselves instinctively, others were not so lucky. As the wall at the rear of the room shattered into a thousand shards of stone, several Druchii were torn to pieces, the pulp of their bodies showering those behind them.

Then there was silence and darkness.

Were they dead?

As their eyes recovered from the magical blast, the full extent of the destruction was revealed. Most of the granary had been destroyed. The roof had collapsed, and the walls had buckled. The way out behind was blocked by fallen masonry and broken beams, chinks of light piercing the darkness like fingers from beyond. Outside, shouts of startled and angry High Elves could be heard, followed by the noise of rubble being removed. They were trying to get in.

Nathra coughed and stared a while at the glowing orb in her hands, which cast a soft light all about the ruined building. Soft moans of the dying could be heard, and she looked about herself for any sign of survivors.

Cade had grabbed the General and threw him to the floor as soon as the light of the blast hit his eyes. With his own body, he had shielded the leader of the Host. Slowly pushing himself up with his hands, he squinted the dust from his eyes, feeling sticky gore on the back of his head. He lifted a hand to check... it was not his... that was good. He rose to his feet, and helped to pull up Thaekan who laughed at the absurdity of surviving such an explosion. Cade, once seeing that the leader of the Host could walk, wandered about the ruin to see what could be recovered.

Amazingly, Kailleth had survived against all odds. A brief respite and a large dose of hushalta had helped him recover from his wounds suffered in the Shadowlands. He had melted away into the Host, and fought silently whilst the warriors around him fell to eagle claws and poisoned arrows. Having heard the rallying call, he had raced to follow the others. Now he found himself staring at an imposing warrior, wearing a lion's pelt and a ragged elf hide.

Of Venarl, nothing could be found. It is possible that the blast transported the inexperienced sorcerer elsewhere. More likely he was torn from this reality to the aethyr. The High Elf Mage's staff lay innocently upon the gore stained flagstones. The blue stone on its top glowed softly like the sky reflected on a lake, and the gold staff was unstained by the damage it had caused. It seemed to call to him, to pull him forwards, challenging him to master its power. It would destroy him, or it would make him great. Unable to resist, Amanthus the Exile crouched down and picked it up, shuddering slightly as a tingle spread through his body as the staff acknowledged its new keeper.

The assassin looked back at the collapsed doorway, hearing the eager shouts of the enemy beyond. Looking forward, he saw darkness. A passageway. Where it led, he could not tell. Curiosity getting the better of him, he drew his dagger and padded softly into the tunnel.

"Unless you wish to join this lot" the General exclaimed, sweeping an arm to gesture to the twisted corpses of their battle kin, "I suggest you follow him."

Nathra, Cade, Kailleth, and Amanthus, made their way forward behind Gilvaad as he disappeared into the shadows. The passageway was real, and so too now was the prospect of surviving this. Out of an entire Druchii host, only the six of them were left.

The insanity of the situation hit Gilvaad, what was he doing here? This was not his chosen arena, how had he let himself become embroiled in an invasion force? Now look at him, stuck in almost darkness with a group of strangers, and the General who had gotten him into this mess.
'Still one or two of them may be useful in time'

Trying to shake off the ringing in his ears, he started to look around in the dim light cast from the glowing stone.
Seeing utter destruction, Gilvaad resigns himself to not being able to salvage anything from the rubble and corpses, but would take a look anyway.
"Perhaps something to use as a safer source of light than anything these forsaken conjurers could produce." he mumbles to himself in a quiet whisper, no really caring if anyone heard.

Checking himself once over to make sure he was unhurt and locating a narrow passageway out, he moves towards it and draws a knife.
'At least in this narrow passageway, his skill with a knife would be of more use than the conventional melee weapons that came into their own on the battlefield', he considered to himself.

"Unless you wish to join this lot, I suggest you follow him." He hear the General announce.

Gilvaad turns, nods his head towards the group, adjusts his stance,

"Shall we? With my Lords permission of course"

Waiting for the others to organise and searching for a source of fuel for a torch and anything salvageable from the corpses

Kailleth pushed through the dishevelled line of retreating warriors shoving people aside with his shield and swatting anyone who attempted to slow his pace. The last handful of warriors from his units rush towards the granary where they had heard the last rallying call of their Commander, hacking at any asur who fell in their path.

they reach the granary without any major resistance then Barricaded the door, there was a sudden rumble and then the building exploded out word sending Stone shards and chunks of masonry flying through the air with a percussive shockwave which levelled the druchii and Asur alike, Kailleth's ears rang as he staggered to his feet and regained his bearings, he saw one other warrior struggling to get to his feet. Kailleth stumbled towards him to help get him on his feet, then The warrior slumped dead Kailleth then noticed the large piece of wooden Shrapnel protruding through the back plate of the downed warrior. He Immediately remembered his situation and metering to the dark mother as he stumbled forward "first the Shadowlands bleeding out like a pig, then the Eagles and arrows, and now collapsing buildings why does everything on this cursed Island want to kill me" but he didn't have the time to puzzles the irony in his compliant.

Stumbling past the rubble not knowing what he would find he stopped short in front of a imposing warrior wearing a pelt of a white lion, Kailleth instinctively went on guard bring a shield up and his sword level behind for strike before realizing that he was facing a fellow Druchii, not dropping his guard Kailleth looked at the warrior and said "so is this the last standard or do we have a survival plan at this point". not caring about speaking out of turn to who seem to be a higher ranking worrier, he quickly survive the devastated room and saw the passageway and the hooded druchii diving into it. "that will do" he muttered to no one in particular looking pass the large warrior,

Kailleth will stand on guard for the moment waiting for warrior to respond, if he dose not acknowledge Kailleth he will move past him to join the others in the passageway taking up a rearguard position in the group

Amanthus was terrified. This was the absolute opposite of where he should be, among druchii who had always hated him, fighting against Asur who did not seem to like him any more than his closer kin.
He looked at the other druchii with a delight mingled with terror, they all looked very capable. He barely dared to move or speak, for someone might be offended and hit him, and he did not want that at all. 'Better to just wait until someone speaks and do what he/she says', he thought.

Even though he felt stings of insecurity his newfound treasure made him calmer. It was a constant relief to hold it, to gaze upon the glow of the stone, like crouching up by the fireplace feeling the warmth for the first time after what would seem an eternity in a cold night. He would never let this treasure go, nor would he let anyone touch it.

The general seemed to speak but Amanthus was too unfocused to hear what he said. Everybody around him started to move, he was startled but soon joined up behind them.

Amanthus will follow the other druchii, though in the fear of getting a good beating every now and then, he will obey almost every command and offer his help out of this fear.

Nathra leapt and bound her way across the battlefield like a pit viper, slashing throats and slicing limbs when the opportunity arose. She could see that some few survivors had... survived the calamity of this expedition, and the shade briefly wondered if she would be better off alone. As she approached the throng of survivors a voice bid to her: "Hurry, this way."

Nathra jumped in behind the man and was met with an almighty explosion.

The raven-haired beauty lay in a dazed heap, soot-stained and boggle-eyed. She knew not how long she lay there, though it can't have been more than a minute, two at the most. Finding the orb touching her bare thigh, Nathra quickly picked it up and sprang to her feet. Her hazy, emerald-eyed gaze settled on the the form of the pathetic General as he instructed them on their continued survival.

At this particular moment in time, following them into the tunnel seemed the only prudent course of action. Though she would make plain her dislike of this 'general'.

Nathra will join the procession into the tunnel.

Kailleth waited for the worrier to say something but after a moment of silents Kailleth relaxed his Guard then proceeds to the mouth of the entrance with the others, on the way he surveyed the room and the floor as he picked his way over the rubble and body looking for any ranged range weapons that were salvageable or anything shiny. before the entrance to the cave Kailleth stop to look at an runty looking elf who was transfixed on an asur staff in his hands, Kailleth looked from the druchii to the staff to the large opening and then to a rubel piecing together the events That unfolded,

'So ether the general has a pet sorcerer, risky for a elf in his high position. Or we have a rogue here'

"Unless you wish to join this lot, I suggest you follow him." He Heard the General announce. and then started down the tunnel,

Racing an eye brow Kailleth cleared his throat and said to the rogue, " nice work" nodding to the opening "but you better get in there and ether light the way or Guard the rear with me" A devilish smirk spent across Kailleth's face " or are you planing on defeating all the asur by yourself"

Kailleth will look for swag move in to the tunnel and talk to Amanthus then follow the others taking up rear Guard position
