Yeah, it's surprising how big a thing is made from such a small line eh? :P

But are you sure it's not related to this mod?

If GW screw up the new edition, then we should at least have some quality electronicHammer to play :D

Let's just hope they get it right - they have a mixed track record when it comes to porting their games to electronic platforms!

If they can pull it off, it will be epic and awesome :)

Oh myyyyy /Takei

Yes please! I didn't like the historical-setting TW games too much but this I can get behind, sign me up!

Like Amboadine says, when this will be set will matter a great deal... we can only hope it's set before (or during) the End Times for maximum army selection options.

I loved TR:Rome because it was as close to a virtual warhammer as I wanted it to be.. Well, for not being within the Warhammer world that is. This would be something to look forward to! :)

Will it be better than Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omen though?

I found Dark Omen unplayable. It seems to have a lot of fans, but I always thought "God, I'd rather be playing warhammer just now than this".

Total War, on the other hand...

Here's the thing, GW has to walk a fine line with this.

They want a product that is good, but not TOO good.

If the product is lousy, it won't sell, and might turn people off to the minis game. Plus I'm sure the Total War people wouldn't go for that because it would hurt their brand as well.

If it's too good, people will buy the game a LOT and not the minis game as much, and then they've sold a $50 computer game (that they've licensed out to another company, so shared revenue), at the expense of hundreds of bucks worth of minis that they don't share revenue on.

Why would your average 14 year old kid spend hours and hours painting minis, and hundreds or even thousands of dollars on a physical army, then go to the game store and try to get a live game, when they have a really good computer game that does the same thing, and thousands of people all over the world waiting to play them online? Even if 10% of the potential minis buyers go that route, it's a huge loss for GW.

It's tricky.

Warhammer Online didn't turn anyone off WFB...
Neither did Dawn of War (which was fantastic)...

Unless I missed something, WH Online was a MMORPG, totally different genre than tabletop wargame.

I never played Dawn of War, so can't comment there. Not a 40k guy.

Dawn of War captured the essence of the fluff and some of the feel of 40k, without actually being close to the game at all in gameplay (it played more like a slightly unusual, yet very well put together version of a typical real time strategy game). It walked the exact fine line that you were referring to direweasel - it got players inspired by the game, enough to go into the hobby itself in some cases, without replacing any of the dynamics that make the tabletop game a unique entity. It was, in fact, the game that got me back into fantasy, although not quite the way you might expect.

I had the day off work (well, technically I was "working from home") and so I went down to my local shopping mall. Upon wandering into GAME, I saw that they had the collector's edition of Dawn of War on sale for £14.99 and, on a whim, I picked it up. I was blown away by the graphics more than anything else (we had just replaced our very ageing laptop with the first desktop computer we had had in around 4 years), but also enjoyed the gameplay and the nostalgia value of the game. I showed it to my wife that evening, who mentioned it to her friend the next day, who confessed to being a lapsed member of a gaming group where they played warhammer. She agreed to take me along to introduce me to the folk there, and the rest is history.
