Short Story - Ghargorath - Part 1 of 3

***

Ghargorath pulled his Sea Dragon Cloak higher around his neck as a spray of water washed over the side of the boat. Another spray of water followed, this one being particularly larger than usual proceeded to drench Ghargorath and his fellow Corsair crew. Stowing a glance around him, Ghargorath sighed depressingly as he watched the eyes of his comrades. Not one smile or baring of anticipation could be seen in each Corsair’s face. The bloodlust was in the air, nobody however, felt any better then they did now. Another spray of water erupted at the hulls side, covering the boats passengers in a chilling foam of white.

Looking down at his feet, Ghargorath watched how the water seeped through the soaked wood below them, each wave they passed over sending a small ripple of water through the wooden cracks and soaked each Corsair’s feet. The transport suddenly picked up speed. The sound of cracking whips and the howls of the slaves adding to the melody of the spray water.

A Reaver at the front of the Corsairs turned to them, his two handed axe making a small clinking noise at he shuffled throughout ranks of Corsairs. The Reaver's name was Valmoth, and his long terms of service in the ranks of Corsairs had elevated him to the status of Reaver. His skills were remarkable, his feats were remarkable, his skill with a blade was remarkable, even his scars were remarkable. Ghargorath remembered the stories which his Reaver leader had told them over the centuries. Valmoth had lost one of his eyes in an incursion of Goblin Raiders. He had told them that a huge sea battle, three Goblin bulk transports had assaulted the single Dark Elf Corsair Ship. Valmoth had bragged how he single handedly slew over 100 goblins that day. He then told us that he lost his eye as the Goblin bulk transport crashed over his Corsair ship, and how one of the many splinters had collided with his eye.
Valmoth had also had the scars of battle all across his body. The second most noticeable one was his shoulder and his left hand. His shoulder had a large chip in it, Valmoth telling us that he lost a chunk of his shoulder when a marauder had put an axe through it. Valmoth’s hand had lost its middle finger when he was in a bar brawl with an Ogre. The cunning Reaver had told the Corsairs that he managed to beat the Ogre down with his bare hands but had his finger bitten off in the process.

I guess we’ll never know, thought Ghargorath looking back up towards Valmoth.

“All right brothers! 45 seconds till we land. Remember your training and we’ll make it out of this alive. I also heard from my superiors that Asuryan scum won’t know we’re here. So we should have a clear run up the beach.” Valmoth turned back round and pushed his way back up to the front of the Corsairs.

Ghargorath calmed his mind, thinking back to his days of training. Bugger. He couldn’t remember them. Gritting his teeth, Ghargorath released a sigh of anger as he pumped himself up for the fight to come.

“10 seconds!” Came a voice from above them.

Ghargorath hurriedly drew his weapon. He didn’t expect the time to pass so quickly. Looking down at his blade just before they reached their destination, Ghargorath gave his curved scimitar a quick flick with his fingers.

The bloodlust suddenly erupted from amongst the Corsairs. Each Corsair screamed their war cries, the landing door hadn’t even been opened yet. Valmoth was already in his customary trance. His dead silent composure contrasted by every fellow Corsair around him. Except Ghargorath. He had trained himself to mirror his Reaver, Valmoth. The boat suddenly stopped, the familiar feel of the ship pushing itself into the sand was evident. The door in front of them swung down quickly, the light billowing in.

Ghargorath heard the sound of whistling...
