Salvation (NC fluff)

Post by Fingol23 »

Salvation
In his fevered state Rackeith barely noticed the female elf slip lithely unto the balcony to his left, when he finally registered her presence he recognised her as Helleborn, Hag Queen of Khaine. He felt a shudder of fear as he thought of what her presence in his hearing might mean, was it possible that he was going to be handed to the Temple as a sacrifice?
Finally Malkeith, true king of elves, pronounced his sentence, “Rackeith, you have been convicted of practicing sorcery. Normally this crime would be worth the death sentence but as you are merely a lowborn scum and a second born one as well you will be exiled. If you ever set foot in Naggoroth again I will not be so lenient. Now get out of my sight, a ship has been arranged to take you from our homeland, a land to which you will never return.”
As he was escorted from the court Rackeith’s mind reeled from the revelation he had just learnt. He was still alive! Malkeith had shown him mercy! Suddenly he was brought to a halt by the two executioners that flanked him on either side. Ahead of him was a single Drow, evidently the ship that was to take him from Naggoroth. On the gangplank stood a single elf in a pose that exuded supreme confidence, with slow, laboured steps Rackeith walked towards the figure. Suddenly the elf spoke, “my name is Hetiahn and I am an adapt of Khaine, it is through the charity of his glorious temple that you still live.”
***
A decade later Rackeith woke with a start, grabbing for his sword as he realised that he was not alone. In front of him stood the same elf that he had first met all those years ago. “Sire, those dwarf maps have revealed an interesting secret to us. Located deep in the Great forest of the Empire is a now abandoned elven city named Tor Thana.” stated Hetiahn his face impassive.
“Oh really and how do you propose to cross half the Empire to this city?” responded Rackeith.
“Sire the armies of men and orc are on the move, rumours of a great artefact have stirred them into action. The resulting confusion would be a perfect opportunity to travel across the Empire.” Hetiahn replied.
“Very well, spread the word, we move at dawn.” ordered Rackeith.

Thanks for the comments and here is the next instalment
As dawn broke Rackeith’s army was lined up in an ordered column. At its head stood the Vanakat , executioners who had disaffected from the temple long ago, resplendent in their gleaming armour and carrying their monstrous two handed swords. Behind them stood Rackeith’s Brides, witch elves who had been sent by the temple to accompany him into exile. The rest of the column was made up of rank and file spearelves with the rear being guarded by a regiment of crossbowmen.
Pleased with the spectacle of his army ready to march Rackeith drove his chariot up to consult with his most trusted lieutenant and battle standard bearer Ares. “Take your riders and the Manflayers to scout ahead and clear us a path, oh and watch out for Mengil, rumour has it that he is more of a psychopath than Helleborn herself.” he commanded.
“Your will be done my Lord.” responded Ares respectfully before galloping his Dark Steed away up the road.

Looks good Fingol. Is this a preface to a battle report?

oh, and in case it becomes relevant, Vanakat is pronounced with a hard Van, but tha other two syllables are weak. (VAN-ach-kat)

Well here is the next instalment

Alexia surveyed he brother’s army before moving down the slope to take up position in her bodyguard of elite warriors. Armed with repeater crossbows, finely crafted swords and elegant tower shields they were a versatile fighting unit capable of fighting independently from the rest of the army, especially when aided by Alexia’s considerable magical ability.
“Greetings mistress, rumour has it that we are moving out of this accursed mountain range at last.” stated Alexia’s favoured retainer, a young noble by the name of Draco.
Catching the hidden meaning behind Draco’s words Alexia responded, “The gossips are correct. We are indeed leaving the mountains.”
“I am pleased to hear this mistress. However it does throw up another question, where then is our objective.”
“Our objective, freedom and a new Elven state.”
“Indeed” muttered Draco, retreating, bemused by his ladies word.

Hey I am in the mood to write today.

Seeing a dark rider frantically galloping down the path towards him Rackeith held up his gauntleted left hand to signal the column to halt. “Lord Ares sends his regards Dread Lord Rackeith, he also commands me to tell you that there is a dwarf throng blocking the pass about half a league from here” the rider said breathlessly.
“Tell Lord Ares to await our arrival.” Rackeith ordered the messenger. Turning to his beautiful daughter, who was riding alongside him on a nauglir, he said “Diana get the army arrayed for battle and send for your aunt, I wish to speak with her.”
“Whatever you wish dear father.” She responded before riding of down the column. Rackeith noted with amusement that many heads turned as she galloped by.

Rackeith had to admire the position the Dwarf Thane had chosen to defend in the coming battle. The Thane had chosen a point where the pass narrowed and then rose upwards. The enemy commander had arrayed the majority of his force in a shield wall at the base of the slope with his few Thunderers arrayed further up the slope, however what really caught Rackeith’s attention was the squat but imposing figure of a cannon which was positioned next to the Thunderers from where it could cover the entire battlefield.
“You called, brother dear?” inquired Alexia as she appeared next to him; gesturing at the army arrayed against them she said “It looks like they are out for revenge after what we did to their hold.”
“How very observant of you my dear sister.” responded Rackeith in icy tones.
“Watch your tongue my Lord,” she responded, “If I hadn’t consented to teach you my new found skills I could be enjoying a tower to myself back in Hag Greaf.”
“Ah, but if we are successful in this venture then you will be queen of an entire city.” countered Rackeith.
“If we get past he stunted ones that is.” she replied, once more gesturing at the Dwarf Throng.
There conversation was interrupted by the arrival of Ares with Diana mounted behind him on his dark steed. “My lord what are your orders?” asked Ares respectfully as Diana dismounted, but only after she had quickly given Ares a kiss on the cheek in plain view of her father.
Deciding not to rise to the bait Rackeith instead asked, “What happened to your cold one my beloved daughter?” putting a slight emphasis on the word “my”.
“Oh Thorn, I left him with a deer carcass and a couple of grooms.” responded Diana eloquently.
“So you decide to catch a lift with my Lieutenant?”
“My actions are my own Dread Lord.” Diana replied in honeyed tones.
“Orders, my lord?” interrupted Ares, trying to steer the conversation back into safer waters.
“Tell the troops to make camp, we attack tomorrow.” answered Rackeith.
“Tomorrow?” queried Ares.
“Yes tomorrow, our troops are tired and a rest will be good for morale also I would ask for you not to question my orders lieutenant.” answered Rackeith.
“Do you doubt your troops ability, or maybe you doubt the ability of your commanders?” questioned Alexia in sharp tones.
“Of course not my dear sister, but I do doubt my troops ability to storm a dwarf gunline after marching more than four leagues.” snapped Rackeith in reply before turning back towards his chariot leaving his commanders to manage setting up camp.

Looks good but why call the sister if you are just going to make camp and attack in the morning?

Just so I know for putting the stories together, where is Rackieth at the moment. Im thinking he is leaving the border princes but am not sure.

Also when Rackieth sets up camp can you find a way of showing that Gorgoneth had shown up because there is a bit of a gap between his last post and the post you wrote for him, it would also be good to start chapter 3 with some of your fluff.

Thanks.

here is some more (I have also edited a bit onto the last instalment) the battle is oming next I promise.

An hour before dawn the Druchii host broke camp and prepared for the approaching battle, the separate regiments quickly formed into orderly ranks while the repeater bolt thrower crew d quickly assembled their fearsome war machine. Rackeith watched Mengil’s Manflayers slink off into the shadow of the massive cliff on the right flank of his army before turning his attention to the deployment of his forces.
His spearmen were arrayed three ranks deep in front of the main body of his army with the Vanakat positioned on the left flank and Alexia’s body guard located on the right wing. Diana and Rackeith’s Brides were positioned behind the screen of spearmen. Content that his plan was sound Rackeith drove his chariot down towards his army.

The assault began at daybreak with the Druchii host careening towards the dwarf lines as a salvo of quarrels and bolts flew over their heads to fall amongst the dwarf Thunderers, felling several. The dwarfs then responded in kind, their handguns dropping many of the advancing spearmen despite their raised shields. Rackeith watched as a cannon ball ploughed a deep furrow in the ground just to the left of his chariot. The dwarf crew however only managed one shot before the daemons of Khaine that Alexia had summoned fell upon them and ripped them to shreds with shrieks of pleasure.
Rackeith felt a chill wind sweep across the battlefield straight towards the dwarf marksmen, freezing several of them to death as ice crystals formed in their beards and their fingers were frozen to their weapons. He smiled and added his own powers to the magical barrage by sending a bolt of pure Dhar scything towards a dwarf clad in ornate runic armour and wielding a staff which was also encrusted by glowing runes. The bolt failed to reach its target and instead fizzled out scant metres from the dwarf. With a cry of rage Rackeith launched a renewed attack fuelled by his anger. This time the beam reached its target but still it did not fell its target instead the dwarf’s rune armour glowed with a brilliant light as the magic of Druchii clashed with the runes of the Dawi. Rackeith was struggling to maintain the attack when an ebony bolt of magic flew from the Druchii lines and struck the Runesmith square in the chest. Rackeith recognised the handiwork of his daughter and smiled, together Diana and Rackeith would be invincible. One by one the runes on the Dawi armour glowed red and faded until finally the Dwarf succumbed to the power of the Dhar.
The two armies clashed with a massive roar and several fell on both sides. The dwarfs were well armoured but the Druchii had the advantage of speed darting in to attack with there spears before jumping back out of the range of the vengeful dwarf axes. With a chilling cry Rackeith ordered his chariot into the fray, aiming for the Dwarf Thane’s bodyguard of Hammerers. Several of the hammer-wielding dwarfs were crushed beneath the chariot and even more fell to the cold ones powerful bite. Rackeith hacked around him with his magical Draich separating heads from torsos and torsos from legs. Beside him the Vanakat hacked their way through the dwarf ranks though the stout dwarfs crushed several of their number to a pulp. Rackeith was surprised to see the slender form of Diana and her ferocious cold one charge beside him into the dawi ranks, cracking skulls with her staff while parrying Dawi blows with her sword.
The Druchii attack was losing momentum however and the dwarfs were beginning to redress their ranks. However just when it looked like the Dwarfs might pull back from the brink Ares led his riders and the Manflayers into the flank of the Dwarf army. Rackeith glimpsed Ares trampling a miner into the ground while beside him Mengil decapitated his opponent before shooting another with his wrist-mounted crossbow.
Finally Rackeith reached the Dawi Thane who was mounted on an elegantly carved stone, evidently he expected Rackeith to fight him one on one. Rackeith sneered at the thought and sent a bolt of dark magic straight into the chest of the dwarf, seizing his advantage Rackeith drove his chariot straight at the Thane smashing him to a pulp.
Seeing their leader defeated in such a manner the dwarf’s legendary resolve finally broke and fled conceding the field to the victorious Druchii.

That night the valley echoed with the screams of those Dawi unfortunate to have been captured by the Druchii host. Rackeith had ordered that no slaves were to be taken until they reached the Tor as they would slow the march and use valuable food and water. So instead all those captured alive were being sacrificed to Khaine to thank him for his aid in the battle. The camp had a festival atmosphere to it as the sacrifices took place. In the very centre of the camp were Rackeith’s Brides, the feared witch elves of Khaine, accompanied unusually by Diana. A casual observer unschooled in the Druchii way would see nothing strange about this as Diana and the Brides were all young slightly psychopathic, beautiful and female, while those well versed in Druchii ways would know that it is unusual to see a sorceress and adept of Khaine together without them trying to spill each other’s blood. However Rackeith was keen to bond his army together and had encouraged Diana to develop ties to the followers of the Temple.
Blood flowed down the valley as the celebration reached its climax. The only prisoners that remained were those of the Thane’s personal guard. These doughty warriors had fought on as the rest of the Throng fled, they had taken down several Druchii but ultimately their efforts were futile as one by one they were brought down. Now they were forced to kneel in a circle in the centre of the camp, an executioner positioned behind each one Draich raised. Behind the dwarf battle standard bearer stood Rackeith himself, at his signal the dwarfs were decapitated simultaneously and a wild ecastic cry rose from the assembled elves.
