FORUM RULES: LAND OF THE WITCH KING - PAINTING & MODELLING

Welcome to the land of chill, there are a few things you should know about this desolate place before you post here - your life will depend on it!

The painting and modelling section is a place for members to showcase their creative skills either through the conversion or painting of models. This section of the forum encourages all members to share their latest works, help generate and brainstorm ideas, get constructive criticism and provide inspiration to help better each member’s skills in the hobby. The main focus of the forum is the Druchii or Dark Elves, however, other game systems, genres are tolerated with the exception of our most hated of enemies the High Elves.

Every poster is obliged to know and follow the general rules and those specific to this forum or face the wrath of the Witch King.

1. KNOW THE RULES
The general rules for Druchii.net can be found at http://www.druchii.net/viewtopic.php?f=129&t=2504

The additional rules for this forum are listed below.

2. POSTING OF PICTURES
We encourage all members to post pictures of their creative efforts on Druchii.net There are two ways you can post picture’s in this forum, either by embedding the picture on the page using the IMG tags or linking to the picture using the URL tags.

In most instances you can embed/link to a picture by right clicking on it, selecting properties and copying the URL of the image, then pasting it between the tags above.

The best file formats for pictures are .jpg, .png, or .gif.

Flash or .swf is also supported but will not display on some platforms (IPad, IPhone)

Both methods for posting pictures require that the picture is hosted somewhere online. There are many ways you can host picture’s here are a few options below:

2.1 UPLOAD PICTURES VIA YOUR POST
The forum now gives you the ability to directly attach pictures to your posts. Below the text posting box you can browse for a picture on your computer, add comments to the picture and then upload the picture to your post as an attachment. Please note that there is a 256kb file size limit on the picture’s you can upload.

2.2 PHOTO HOSTING SITES
There are many of these online; here are a few of the main ones below. You can upload your pictures to these sites and then link to them in your post.

3. 256kb IMAGE FILE SIZE REPLACES THE OLD 800x600 RULE FOR EMBEDED PICTURES
The forum will now automatically resize all embedded pictures to a suitable size when displayed in your browser. This means that you no longer have to resize your pictures to the old 800x600 size for embedding into your post. It does mean however that the embedding of larger images will take considerably longer time to load. For this reason we request that you:

ONLY EMBED PICTURES THAT ARE SMALLER THAN 256kb
Posters who violate this order will face the executioners axe and the pictures will be removed!

If you wish to use a larger picture and it is over 256kb in file size please link to it using the [url][/url] tags. This will allow threads/posts to load in a considerably quicker time for those using a slow internet connection.

If you are unsure of the file size you can right click on the picture, select properties and the file size will be displayed. A good example for keeping it below the file size limit is to stick with the old rule (although now redundant) of keeping your images no larger than 800x600 in size.

There are a number of software applications or online sites that you can use to resize your pictures - here are a few below that might be helpful.
- Pixlr http://pixlr.com
- Gimp http://www.gimp.org
- Windows Paint
- Microsoft Office Picture Manager
- Photo Filtre http://www.photofiltre-studio.com
- Adobe Photoshop (Download a trial version http://www.adobe.com)

4. PICTURE QUALITY
Please ensure the pictures you use are of a suitable quality. Those that are blurry and out of focus, poorly cropped where the subject matter is too small and pixelated images (those that are small and have been blown up in size so you see the squares) are not acceptable. Pictures like this could result in them being removed from the thread. There is nothing more frustrating than looking at these types of pictures and trying to comment on that Witch Elf Black Guard riding a Black Dragon Giant when the picture is barely legible.

5. SPAM POSTS
Spam will not be tolerated in the Painting and Modelling forum. Examples of posts that are considered Spam are:

5.1 Posts that contain nothing but smilies, for example:

5.2 Posts that contain few words, the so-called "Wow posts", such as: “Cool, I like you mini!!!” “WOW” and similar mindless one sentence posts. We urge people to put a bit of thought and effort into their posts.

5.3 Posts that are clearly irrelevant or abusive.

Note that Spam posts will be deleted immediately. Spam posters who believe that they will raise their post counter in this way are not only very stupid but also very wrong. Notorious spammers and posters breaking rules will face consequences such as official warnings and temporary or permanent exile from the land of chill. Please read also "How to deal with spammers" topic here - http://www.druchii.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=32106

6. CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM
Giving a member feedback on their work is a large part of the Painting and Modelling forum, where we all can show our creations to the world for people to comment on them. That adds the risk of someone giving "Destructive Criticism" - a delicate matter.

For instance, you can have the opinion that a particular paint job is atrocious. But there are many ways to make the artist aware of your opinion. Here are two examples:

“HAHA!!! That is the worst paint job I have ever seen, you have no future in this hobby if you are going to put those models on the battlefield”

“Oh, my dear friend, I think you can do a lot better than that paint job; I would advise you to train X painting technique to improve your skill. Would you like to have some links to painting guides?"

There is of course a grey zone between these examples, but I urge you to lean to the second one.

7. REDUNDANT TOPICS
Before you start a new thread, please check if a similar topic exists at least three pages into the forum history. Some topics are really popular and you may find a solution in an already existing topic. Existing topics may also contain valuable information, suggestions, answers and opinions. Also, if you have a problem or question regarding the matter already included in one of the existing topics, please post it there instead of creating a new one. Don't reanimate topics (Necromancy) which are long, long dead, ie. In which there has been no activity for quite some time. Mods will consider every case, but when you start a redundant topic there's a fair chance it will be locked. Don't worry, we always point to the existing one.

8. NECROMANCY
Necromancy is reanimating threads which are long dead for post counter raise only. Typical example is when someone's post has nothing to do with topic which received last post half year ago. Such necromancy posts will be deleted as they are considered spam.

9. PLOGs or PAINTING BLOGS
A relatively new phenomenon, PLOGS are rapidly becoming a favoured way of posting progress on given painting and modelling projects. To make a distinction between PLOGs and regular topics, all PLOG topic titles are henceforth to be preceded by the [PLOG] tag. For instance MemberX has a topic called “MemberX’s Dark Elf Raiding Party” that he posts continual updates on the progress of his army. The topic should be revised to “[PLOG] MemberX’s Dark Elf Raiding Part” to distinguish in the threads list that it is a painting blog.

10. COPYRIGHT
If you post images of other peoples in order to be able to use the artwork make sure you include the name of the author and a link to the source.

The painting and modelling forum has seen a positive change in the quality of posts since the beginning of Druchii.net. Spam is down, and a high number of post’s are high quality Questions / Answers / Discussions. Let’s keep on in this fashion!
