It's just a straight line
I don't see any topics on this so hopefully this isn't redundant.
I'm a medium skill painter and I've decided to add some detail to my models. I thought I'd start with something relatively simple like a straight line. The HE models are a plenty with a nice strip of colour along the bottom of cloaks and chariot-horses cloth bits. Or a Drcuhii example is the Black Guard champion has a white stripe across the front of his "pants". Freehanding it doesn't work well enough as the lines just don't come out even all the way across. I'm wondering if anyone else has tried it and had any luck???
Any advice is appreciated!!

Multiple ideas. First off brushing it should work semi well... just takes some practice. You could also experiment with paint pens (I'm not sure of their actual names though) or if it really comes down to it, use a bit of masking tape and tape off a section!

masking tape won't ruin models. It prolly isnt a good idea to try and put it on the already painted side of course but it isnt nearly strong enough to ruin pewter or plastics...

I usually paint a big, thick line of the color of which I want a thin line (yup, that is a paradox ), and after that, I use the color 'beneath' the line to make the line thinner. So:
W=white line
B=Black 'background'
1.
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
2.
WWWWWWWWWWWW
WWWWWWWWWWWW
WWWWWWWWWWWW
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
After step 2., take a pencil and work up with black until your line is thin enough
3.
WWWWWWWWWWWW
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB
Good Luck!

I find that painting a lighter colour or a "thinner" colour works ok of a preset base colour, like the foundation ork shide shade for Dark angels green, the you can paint over the base colour or any over slip. Also its easier to paint a darker colour over a lighter colour so painting a larger area of light for the line then going over it with the darker one does work! I used on my shades cloaks!
Good luck!
Good luck!

Shodow1, that happens sometimes. Live with it. (The replies to your post that is).
Azure respond though. Good luck with your mood ...
Painting straigh lines is a matter of practice and using a good (expencive) brush.
Building up your lines from light to darker helps aswell. That way any flaws will be
less noticable.

Painting a stripe or a line like you explained on a modle is accually quit dificult compared to highlighting, because when you highlight you just keep the edge of the brush on the hights point, but when you want a solid steady straight line on a 3 dimmensional object with cures and dips its accually hard to nail it.
Using paint that is thined out enough will help alot, make sure to mix a little paing in a small mixing pot or on a plate and ad a littl water to it till it seems to flow, if it is to thin it wont show the color strongly so just add a little more paint, and if its to thick it wont flow easy on the modle.
What I do is attemp to paint a nice straight line like you explained and wich is imposible to do but its best to keep it as clean and neat as posible, then as suggested before go over the edges very carefully with the color that is underneat the line to clean it up.
here is one of my modles as a example. I had to paint a few straight lines on this modle to get the effects I wanted, so this is a perfect example.
