The Grand Host of House Soulreiver - Army blog

Post by Sinzaren »

Well, I';ve tried army blogs before and never really gotten anywhere, but I'm gonna have a go at another. For two reasons really, one, to get my army ready for a legendary Battles game at my local GW on Sat 9th Aug, and two, for me to keep track of what the hell I'm painting and whats done :P.

I've been gaming on and off now for around 16 years, and really found myself drawn to the DE army when the 5th Ed book came out, and since then I've managed to collect quite an army, of which I will be using almost everything I have painted in the battle (only GW stuff of course). I'm currently painting up a few chariots to add to the list, and making some magnetic movement trays, I will add some pictures of each unit as I get it fully ready and will also put up a few battle pics once the game is played. For completeness I will add a list below of what I will be lumbering down to the store with. I still need to confirm with the GW manager whether or not I will be using special characters, but if I have a choice, I'll leave them out (never been a one for using them).

**********

I've edited the list below since the game to include everything I have painted

Its nice to see someoen else that has been in the hooby a long time and has way too many models. I am right there with you except I play chaos, high elves and dark elves.

I think you Blackguard are your best work and look really good. The drealord's mount could seriously benefit from a few for levels of highlighting/shading.

Eight bolt throwers....now thats a lot of firepower.

Thats a mighty impressive army alright. It's almost useless to critique such an enotmous list, really anything can happen and it probably will. All I could suggest is, such a massive army ought to have more scouts, both the foot and mounted variety. Heheh, nine assassins. The magic number.

Ough, and I thought I had a huge army!!!

You've beat me twice almost in everything except cavalry...

Are they all 4-5ed or 6th ed, 7th ed models?

90 Executioners! Whow.

I understand though, I myself wanted to have flexibility to field what I want... But You seem to have too less DRs for such monstrous army :)

Painting job is good, high contrasts, nice for tabletop! I agree that BGs are the best of those shown.

I see Eldar Avatar at the Alter Of Khaine?

Cheers guys

@Mordru - yeh collecting elves seems to be the only thing that interests me in the gaming, so the army just keeps growing :P I think the photo may be slightly messed up in the Dreadlord pic, there is more highlighting on the mini than it shows, and its a lot darker in person as well.

@Arnold Layne - More scouts you say, yeh was thinking it needed a few, will get some out of my to-do cases and try get a few more painted for the game :P (have just had a search and found 40 shades - 4th ed, and a box of Gladerider conversions)

@Iyagd - The whole host is a mix from all editions, all painted in a similar scheme, which I painted when I first started the army. I do have a load more stuff sitting about waiting to be assembled/painted, such as another 30 CO knights and some WE glade Rider conversions I started last year.

Wow, lol... that is AMAZING, Good Work! :D

Will look breathtaking when you play!

Q: The Carnosaur... you said it counts as a manticore without fly, will you get to take it for less points?

i like your altar of blood thing, looks nice. Is that the forgeworld elder avatar of khaine model? looks nice and its huge! Everyone seems to be using the naked witch elf chick in their CoB conversions now, i intend too as well. I am going to use the Juza miniature CoB though ;) nice work, i like the carnoasur too.

@GreyNightmare - It would make sense but to be honest I would just use it with the stats and points cost of the Manti, just for the ease of it, and so my opponent can't complain too much about it.

@Heartrender - Yeh it is the Eldar Avatar, its much bigger and way more detailed than the original, I'm planning on having the right hand dripping blood into the cauldron, can't quite decide on what colours to paint it tho, was thinking maybe gold with a green inner-glow in the recesses.

@Thanee - The rubber ducky is the coolest, sadly I dropped the cauldron and the ducky ran off, still haven't found it on the floor :(

Quick update on what I've gotten done yesterday, well I've been busy moving minis from one case to another and somehow managed to put the whole army, bar one dragon into two cases, all be it rather huge cases. I've made up movement trays for all of the regiments, which I magnetized ready for me to add some metal washers to the whole host today. I also got the CoB and the Shades undercoated (just before the rain started) and finally, did a bit of painting to finish off a Dragonlord and put together another mini for Sethvir (wasn't keen on the look of the old one), and tried a colour scheme on some of the new Corsairs (still not sure whether I like them or not).

A few snaps taken this morn :

My beloved 3rd ed Scouts!!! Yay! I own a lot of them too. I also see some 3rd ed minis in the crowd :)

It is really cool to see that some people prefer those way cooler and way more hard looking Scout minis than current Native-Amercian ones.

Dragonlord is nice, additional points for old Black dragon, although I am not too kin of his shield (It is old chaos warriors one as I recall).

The shield is the old chaos lord shield, my entire army uses it, and it also appears on the army standard. I started using it a long long time back, just to make the army look a little bit different. I think it resembles the face of the avatar quite closely so say that its the symbol of the house, that of the face of Khaine.

I have over 5000 pts of dark elves, but you have loads more than that. Those third edition shades are very characterful models. There is a wide variation is sizes among some of the older models as well.

Those old shades are rather small compared to the 4th/5th edition Black Guard especially which are very large every the rxbs and spears are large. 6th and 7th edition models are mostly smaller than 4th/5th edition but larger than 3rd.

It is interesting to see them all part of the same horde.

Where did you get the statue for the Cauldron of Blood?! I've been looging around and never found anything in plastic to fir that criteria?

otherwise, nice work, i particularly like the carnosaur. You don't see too many of them in our armies.

Hi again folks

Well since my last post all I seem to have been doing is glueing washers to the bases on minis, just seems to be taking ages :P, but only got two units left to do now.

I have done a little bit of painting tho, I've updated my Battle standard to look more effective. I added one of the shields I use to the banner itself, then added some green stuff around the side to try and make it look like the fave is pushing through the banner.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b108/Khaane/DSCN1215.jpg

Have also painted up one of the new Dreadlord on foot minis, which I will be using, most likely as a master, if you notice the base look a bit funny, its cause I made it so I can remove it from the base and add it to the back of a chariot (I magnetized the base and the back of the chariot, then based him on a washer).

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b108/Khaane/DSCN1216.jpg

and finally I've painted up the new Sethvir mini, made up from some HE parts and a few DE bits, still have the dragon to paint up, but I should get that done over the next couple of days.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b108/Khaane/DSCN1218.jpg

Next up I will either be adding some shades, or some of the new COK which are now sitting looking at me begging to get painted.

Nice stuff here, but you did not answer the "big" question, where is the rubber duck?
Everybody here tremble thinking what happened to the cuty duck, BBq for shades? !lol!

Edit: nice work on conversions but I can spot a molding line on Setvhir

Well the duck is still MIA can't see it anywhere, although still looking. Th mold line is there, but the mini is just really a one off for this big battle, and it doesnt show as much as in the picture IRL.

As for the round bases, I dont do tornie gaming, I just game for the fun and well really to have a good laugh. I usually say if it looks like you can attack it, then whatever just do it. If I win I win, if I loose, then well I do the Dark Elf thing and claim victory anyhow :P

WOWWWWW that is an incredible feat you have almost accomplished there! Truly inspiring to see that you have painted such a large army to such a nice standard!

Any other pics possible of the whole thing all together?

ALSO: that is a TON of movement trays! Spare some for me? :P

Quick question, what is that model in the backround of your two dragonlord pictures? That thing is amazing, and very well painted I might add.

Also, love your cauldron of blood conversion. I was going to do something similer with the normal GW avatar but decided that it looked kinda gimp compared to the normal statue. Cant wait to see that beast get painted :D

@Khaos - Thats an old Netherlord miniature (use the term miniature lightly there) from Heresy, its one amazing lump of metal. I generally use him as a giant, but sadly can't use him in the game on Sat as its not a GW mini.

And on another note, the game on Sat is gonna be huge, I have a friend bringing a few of his DE along so we will hopefully be fielding around 20,000 points, I will be taking my camera, and will hopefully get a shot of each and every unit and a few army shots, and some in game shots. I'll also attempt to write out a brief bat-rep :P
