Second rank of Cold One Knights problem.

Post by Azure »

As always, it is extremely possible that I am just being stupid in how to assemble the next 5 of my knights. I have already finished and based the first 5 so not really looking forward to redoing the basing if that is what I need to do.

So, onward with the question. Has anyone found a way to make these animals rank up? Even with the back foot on either back corner of the base, I can't seem to get them to line up. Any ideas?

I have had the same problem, but they are already built so Im not redoing them lol.

However, maybe putting the front rank on the left side of the bases, and the second rank on the right side of the base might work?

If you have the old COK then no problem if you have the new ones you can either put them on scenic bases (rocks) or do it the way I did them and glue the Cold Ones diagonally on the bases first using green stuff that way you can "slide" them so that their tails and head don't hit each other. All my new COK are now interchangeable meaning any COK of mine can be at the front or back rank. Be sure to consider the legs of the knight themselves as they can get in the way of each other doing this. Took me an hour to rank 30 COK but it was well worth it.

My first rank was made for 7th edition, so they're pretty much glued in all kind of weird way on their base.

when 8th came out, and i decided i wanted a 2nd rank, i had to number my front rank, to get them all in the same position all the time, and then i glued my 2nd rank to fit with the first 5.

It's alot of work, but its kinda like with corsairs ; if you dont wanna curse every time you get them on their tray, you gotta number them.

I gave up and staggered mine (odd number in the back rank). Maybe you could bend the tails with a little heat?

I did the same. As with all of you, my front rank is fixed, and I'd rather go to great lengths adjusting the second rank than have to reposition, re-glue, re-base and repaint the front rank. I also put mine staggered off-center, but I'm tinkering a bit to try and get them to rank up neatly. I'll update this post if I figure out a decent method that doesn't involve ripping apart the work I've already done.

Depending on how you did it, it may still be possible to get them in 2 ranks. For example, mine can fit depending on where the Cold One's head is. Try mixing some guys around and see if you can get results.

For mine i glued the cold ones in the second rank on at an angle so they fit around the tails of the front rank and then shifted the torso of the knights so they are facing front.
It actually looks really great and they fit well.
If i can get around to it ill take a photo for you but its pretty much how i explained it... Heads next to tails and torso of knights shifted so they sit straight
Oh yeah and my front is set and facing straight ahead as it sounds like yours are

Having assembled, painted and based all 10, I resorted to heating the tails of the front rank with a hair dryer and then bending them slightly.

Durzod: Howd the paint withstand? That is most likely my best option at this point since I decided to just stagger them.

Azure: Used low setting and took my time. The paint held up just fine. That was my biggest concern, too, but they turned out just fine.
Note that this will only work with plastics. Don't try it with metal, as you'll only waste your time.

Why don't you make a movement tray with some kind of spacing between your first and second row of cold one knights?

Mainly because if I do indeed use a unit this large for tournament / serious game purposes, I'd like the models to be as flush as possible. In my current club group it wouldn't be a problem to have them imagine that all was fine but in a tournament, well who knows!

Durzod: Hopefully my sister wont notice when I commandeer her blow dryer! I'll keep you posted on my results and hopefully itll work out fine. Luckily for my coldones it is only 1 base with 2 highlights and then a wash so any damage to the paint isnt a HUGE deal. Just a few minutes per model.
