Armies on Parade is coming up way to quickly this year and I feel very behind in time. I have finished my second unit of 20 Corsairs (took me 4 months on and off, with many distractions) and now I have finished my first terrain piece for this years board, an empire watch tower.

This was a bit of fun to make and did not take overly long. It came about a bit by accident with me experimenting with silicon and making some moulds one day. Al the brick work for the tower is just PVA glue :D and is constructed from a pringles container and some balsa wood.

The tower breaks down into 4 sections for easy transport - the base can also be used as a fiery pit. I am also thinking of making some alternative tops for it (when I get time).

Dude, please keep painting new stuff, im seriously looking forward to see more of your stuff.
Your Dark Elves are quite an inspiration for people like me, who are starting to (or starting again) paint minis.
Your Dwarves and Scenery are also awesome, of course.

Keep them coming

This past month has been quite busy getting back in to painting my Corsair Karond Kar army after completing the ship. Its good to be back painting mini's again. I picked up 40 metal warriors shields quite a while back and always wanted to do a big block of Dreadspears.

I did not want them to look the usual and given that they are sea based opted for a conversion on the leg piece. The High Elf shadow warriors legs worked really well when painted up as scale mail and gave them a much more dynamic look to the unit (more mobile) which is how I imagine them being ship bound.

Anyway for your enjoyment a few pics of the unit.

Excellent work!

I have to ask, though, as someone who's been away from the hobby for a decade... When did DE infantry regiments get so huge? If 40 had been the expected size for a core infantry unit in a non-horde army back when I played WHFB, I'd never have gotten into the game at all. It would just have been too daunting, both in terms of money and time. I don't think I'd have the patience to assemble and paint 40 of the same troop type in one go even now.

There's a combination of reasons.
- 8th edition gave units in horde formation (10 models wide, depending on troop type) an extra rank to fight. Some units would thus go 10 wide and 3 deep for maximum damage potential.
- Steadfast makes you stubborn while you have more ranks than the enemy. While this should benefit units with more ranks and a smaller frontage, units that are 10 wide still need to lose 6 models or more before losing the last rank, and 16 or more before losing another rank... making them fairly resilient.
- Some abilities like "magical resistance" carry over to the unit. So a character with MR(3) grants the whole unit a 4+ ward save against magical damage.
- You only get victory points for removing the unit completely, so you have to kill it to the last model.

It made big units a bit like a tank, incredible in defense and offense.

Dreadspears weren't exactly popular under 8th.. but I have used a unit of 30 to great effect in medium sized games and would like to employ a 40 model unit in larger games. That unit can dish out up to 41 attacks which is nothing to be sneezed at if you can get just a little of magic support in. Throw in the ranks as a bonus, and it's unlikely that the enemy will have steadfast against you, which is very important to breaking your opponent.

But most of all, in many cases, it's easier to use than 20 dreadspears for their ranks and heavy hitters for the kills separately.. and hope both make it across the table because otherwise you're dead.

I quite love the look of a horde of 30-40 spears :) But yeah, it's very demanding in hobby and financial terms and probably was one of the major drawbacks of 8th.

Great work as always Cult. I sort of hold you and Lion as the benchmark around here (not that there aren't other fantastic painters here!), and as usual, you didn't disappoint.

Thanks guys for the comments - it was a brain numbing unit to paint, nothing overly special, just a quick base coat, wash and highlight on most of the minis. I had some good music playing which helped pass the time :D and the final result makes it worthwhile.

I'm still not 100% happy with the banner, I wanted to do the Karond Kar rune on it but my sizing was a bit out - I might come back to it later when I finish the army.

@direweasel I wish Lion was still around I too use to get a lot of inspiration form his work, I wonder if he is still painting.

@LD Yes it's an official GW model - it was only available online via special orders a few years back.
