Mousekillers Works in Progress: Neutral Armies

Post by Mousekiller »

Over the mountains they came, massed in numbers that the world had not seen in a generation. Orcs, goblins, and Ogres, allied together to make an mass of flesh so dense they barely fit through the trails. The Dwarfs saw them coming, knew they could do nothing to stop such a horde. Closing the gates of their holds they also knew the hordes would never penetrate the stone hardened gates. With no resistance to stop them, the hordes passed into the lands of men, reaping destruction to the human realm.

Alright, so, my OCD has kicked in and I have decided to have 5 WIP threads, one for each group: NEUTRAL, ORDER, CHAOS, DEATH, DESTRUCTION. Each group will be updated, one per week, in order. I want to be sure that I am able to capture your critiques, and also that you can easily see the progress since there is a month in between updates within the groups.

Links to the armies, where the completed works are, will be at the bottom of this thread.

WOOD ELVES:

TREEMAN OF RAGE
This guy seems to be coming along, got more done on his front side, the upper half is further along then the lower half. Left arm has the first highlight layer done, right arm has none. Are the glowing eyes working? I used the glaze method on these ones, went from white, to a yellow glaze, than a darker yellow wash, then a green glaze. In the second picture I have placed a sprite, do you guys think it is necessary, or just let the tree go all natural? I pulled out some squirrels and a raccoon too, but removing the base that is molded on them will be a pain in the arse.

Manufacturer: Ultraforge Miniatures
Sculptor: Unknown - anyone know?

TOBIAS WINTERHORN, WOOD ELF DRUID
This guy will be the leader of our small band of wood elves, for now... lol. Very dynamic model, and surprisingly balanced. Other than the green of his cape, the rest is just a base coat.

Manufacturer: Reaper Warlord Miniatures, 03294 Tobias Winterhorn, Druid

Sculptor: John Winter

WOOD ELF ARCHERS
Here is the test model for the Wood Elves. Please be critical! I think the colors work well together. Still some final highlights to be done, basing, and the little details of the belt and wraps on the arm, eyes, etc.

Manufacturer: Games Workshop 6th Edition

Sculptor: Alex Hedstrom and Steve Saleh

LIZARDS:

SKINK PRIEST

This one is all base coat so far. Figured he would be a nice simple leader of the small band for now. I am using the below picture as inspiration for him. So far, just base coat has been done.

SKINKS

Ok, the one in front is the most done of course, the ones in the back were primed and given a blue basecoat. Still need to go back over it with a wash and some more fine highlights. What are your thoughts on color scheme?

DWARVES:

KRAGG THE GRIMM

Not a lot done on this guy... just started on the anvil itself with some gold work. Also, decided to go back over the white beard again, it was just not convincing me.

Sculptor: Michael Perry

ODUM RUMBLEBEARD, DWARF WIZARD

Started this guy this week, I really didn't need more projects on the table but this is what happens when I start looking through the pile of unpainted stuff! Really just base coat and primed, with the exception of the hair. The sculpt itself has so much character to it.

Manufacturer: Reaper Dark Heaven 02707 Odum Rumblebeard, Dwarf Wizard

Sculptor: Jason Wiebe

DWARF LORD
Time to be extremely critical. I made a few changes based on advice... turned the cape from blue to purple and added the white design. Looks really sloppy in the picture, which is the nice thing about pictures! So, I will have to go back in and tighten up the line a little. Still need to do the base work as well. What else needs more work? EDIT: The more I look at the pictures, the more I realize how crappy the blends on the cape are...

DWARF HAMMERERS
Again, struggling with these Mantic dwarves. Cheap to get, but the sculpts just don't make a lot of sense, especially the armor bits on the shoulders. Ah well, here are five in various stages of done.

Manufacturer: Mantic Games

Sculptor: Unknown

BUGMANS RANGERS

These guys are awesome to paint, some of them getting a repaint from back in the day. Have to thank a really good friend for sending me three more to round out the unit to 20! These five are all in various stages of completion.

THE SHAVEN CAVALRY, PIG RIDERS

These guys are a lot of fun, I did a little more on the pin striping on his pants. Also started adding some green highlights to his hair and basecoated his leather bits. On the second pig, it got a round of base coat, but it needs more.

Manufacturer: West Wind Productions, Dwarf Wars II, Dwarf Shaven Cavalry

Sculptor: Unknown.

NEUTRAL ARMIES

Chop, chop, chop. Chop, chop, chop. The steady beat of the noise, the calming rhythm of it. Chop, chop, chop. Awakening from a slumber, the ancient treeman opened its eyes to scan the area. All around the forest were groups of men, cutting away at the forest younglings. Chop, chop, chop. A rage filled the ancient spirit, like none that had ever come before...

WHAT IS ON THE WORK TABLE:

WOOD ELVES

TOBIAS WINTERHORN:

Very minor update. Added some browns to the fur areas and a little skin work.

Manufacturer: Reaper Warlord Miniatures, 03294 Tobias Winterhorn, Druid

Sculptor: John Winter

Image

WOOD ELF ARCHERS

Went back in and got rid of the green bits on the back. Added a base coat to the bow.

Manufacturer: Games Workshop 6th Edition

Sculptor: Alex Hedstrom and Steve Saleh

Image

TREEMAN OF RAGE:

Finished out the arms this week. I will start incorporating the green bits on the next go around. I want to do green inside of the mouth, but should it be a glowy green or just vegetation?

Manufacturer: Ultraforge Miniatures
Sculptor: Jeremy Glen (maybe??)

LIZARDS:

SKINK PRIEST

Did the blue skin a bit, still a lot to go on it. Still using the frog colors for reference, so will go back in and do some subtle pinkish tones later. Disregard, the blue skull... though I am contemplating doing a darker skull, or maybe a green emerald tone to it?

Image

SKINKS

Worked up the blue on the skin, though it still needs a lot! Changed the scale colors on the back to green. What color suggestions for the shield scales?

Manufacturer: Games Workshop 6th Edition

Sculptor: Mark Harrison

DWARVES:

KRAGG THE GRIM:

Worked on Kragg himself a bit. The fur cape primarily.

Manufacturer: Games Workshop 4th Edition

Sculptor: Michael Perry

BUGMANS RANGERS:

Primarily did work on the banner bearer this week (beard, bone bits).
