A couple of pics

Post by Cal »

Well I got a new camera for christmas so I've been learning how to use it and taken some pics of one of my high elf chariots:

Sorry about the pic quality but I'm still learning and haven't put these through photoshop yet, thoughts would be most appreciated.

Ok, the colour balance in these is good, but you have to distinct problems going on here. The first one is that you are too close to the model, and the camera is unable to focus on the models properly - if the camera has a macro mode, then you can use this to allow close focussing.

The second problem you've got is some camera shake. You'll get this when you hold the camera by hand. If possible, you can hold the base edge of the camera against a short pile of books or something similar in order to stabilise it.

You'll be amazed at how much of a difference these techniques will make to your pictures.

Ummm yeah, I'll go and take some more pics as soon as I've corrected the mistake I've only just noticed.

typicall autofocus problem,
like DP said use makro mode and then give your focus a target in directly behind the miniature. Mostly the autofocus can´t find your miniature becuase surface is to complex or background is larger than miniature in front. A trick is to hold your hand directly behind the miniature , push button itro first postition to activate autofocus, then put your hand away und put button into last postion to make the pic... Done

I hope this help

some comments.

Ok, colour is much to thick, you must begin to thin your colours. Otherwise you wouldn´t become better! Colour schema is ok but If you use green it´s better to go with purple! Green and red are complementary colours, that means you get a good contrast but it bites terribley! Many parts look brushed and this will give the whole thing a dirty look. Better you start a good highlightning. Further many details arn´t pasinted like the eyes of the horse. Worst thing in my eyes is that the paint job isn´t clean. Most painting faults can be forgiven if the whole painting is clean and colours doesn´t go over their place. The overall look is to dark for high elves, that´s a cause of the colour choice also of the unclean paintjob.

Here an example of a nice green colour schema if you like going with one

Ok, hard critic but you see that I try to help and hope you can develop your painting skills forward.

A particular pet peeve of mine is gap-filling & mold line removal. Here you've gone to all the trouble of painting the model but the fact that you didn't bother to fill the gaps between the horses' bodies & their heads lets down the whole piece. If you're going to go back and do some more work, #1 should be fixing the horse's necks.
