Converting cooler and cheaper models

Post by Lordsaradain »

As we all know, money is (almost) always a problem for wargamers. Buying those expesive metal blisters will always ruin you, but without them your army is seriously lacking.

Here are some examples and tips for how players can substitute metal models for cheaper plastic ones, as well as customizing your minis to make them more personal and cool. I've simply used plastic boxes that make one type of regiment, to make another instaed.

Feel free to comment the sloppy painting etc, this thread is mostly to give people ideas about cool conversions. I'm not showing of my painting 'skills'(anyway, many of the pictures are abit bad, the colours are not correctly shown etc, but like I said, I want to show off the models, not the paintjob), I'm showing of my conversion SKILLS!! Hopefully, everyone who reads this thread will contribute with at least one idea that hasn't already been mentioned. I'd like to hear your tips too! :)

Built this with a gluegun, greenstuff and some bits from the plastic chaos spawn and giant.

Dark Riders:
http://img458.imageshack.us/img458/224/ ... rs14en.jpg
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/9781/d ... rs21ps.jpg
I bought the plastic wood elf glade rider models. Give them some Dark elf bits, paint them and there you go, plastic dark riders!

Spare bit mutants:
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/6731/mutants4lm.jpg
http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/4073/m ... ack1qc.jpg
Title says it all! I just took some of my spare bitz and glued them together and víola! I'm using them as marauders.

Nurgle spawn:
http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/4259/b ... gle1fg.jpg
http://img345.imageshack.us/img345/8754 ... ack4xh.jpg
I took a snail toy  and attatched some bitz to it. :)

Black Knights:
http://img431.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... 29e3xd.jpg
I took the bretonnia knight and gave them skelly heads and I also used alot of spare bits from empire. Alternatively, you can use the empire knights or TK horsemen if you prefer them without barding.

Chaos Knights:
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/7113 ... hts6nl.jpg
http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/5204/t ... hts4gt.jpg

The first regiment has got arms and heads from the old Chaos warriors, and the second regiment has got parts from the new Chaos warriors.

Update: Slaanesh and Nurgle Knights below! Made just like the tzeentch knights with some other spare bitz.
Nurgle Knights:

Nurgle warriors:
http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/5084/w ... gle6qd.jpg
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/9909 ... ack7zo.jpg
I used the normal marauder models but gave them mutant and warrior heads, orc and chaos warrior arms and orc and marauder shoulderplates. Abit cheaper too.

Nurgle Exalted:
http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/899/ch ... gle3di.jpg
Made just like the warriors.

Nurgle Marauders:
http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/9949/m ... gle3dx.jpg
http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/8202/m ... ack9yk.jpg
I used zombies and gave them some marauders parts as well as alot of other things. Dont forget that maruders use the larger bases.

DoW Heavy Cavalry
http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/5707/d ... lry0ep.jpg
I made these from two spare bretonnian knights and 3 spare empire knights. Has anyone seen Kingdom of Heaven? I tried to paint them similarly to Balian's knights, right before the suicidal charge.

Raised Skeletons:
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/5327 ... ons5tj.jpg
This is a classic. You can do the same thing with zombies. Simly glue som heads and arms to the base and your done.

http://img484.imageshack.us/img484/4628/img00267fm.jpg
http://img484.imageshack.us/img484/5476/img00251xc.jpg

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/2729 ... ds52is.jpg

Khorngors:

Finished:
http://img232.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... 027fe0.jpg
http://img232.imageshack.us/my.php?imag ... 026ir0.jpg
They are made from plastic empire knights, with dark elf torsos and heads, bretonnia lances, with dark elf speartips and sheilds. The "wings" on the back of their helmet comes from a plastic bretonnia knight head.
The banner comes from chaos warriors, the skulls from a marauder banner and the dragon on top from the helmet of the old elector count on griffon.
The champion is weilding an empire militia greasword. The spikes on the horses legs are tips cut of dryad arms and stuff.

Edit: I realize now that some of my conversions are now obsolete, since GW has released plastic kits for them. Below are some of my outdated cheap conversions.

Black Orcs:
http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/9226/blackorcs1ew.jpg
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/4142 ... ack7ur.jpg
I bought a box of 40k 'Ard Boyz and simply assembled them without guns and gave them sheilds and choppas and command. Quite easy and cool.
Alternatively, if you are even cheaper, buy a box of normal orcs and assemble them and order some metal black orc heads for them.

Ghouls:
http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/8162/img00573nj.jpg
I used zombies. The body without shirt(not the one spilling its guts) and the legs with loincloth work best. Arm them with something pointy or some random body part.

Plastic graveguard (wip):
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/3480 ... entff1.jpg
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/2871 ... andtq1.jpg
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/2613 ... rd1pb7.jpg
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/7194 ... rd2dw6.jpg
Made from normal bretonnian men-at-arms with skeleton heads and a few other simple conversions.

Daemonettes:

some of them are gd. i like the dark riders but i'm insulted that you used snotlings as nurglings (i'm a snotling army owner :)) but arn't they the same price?

the raised skeletons are a clasic, but don't look as gd when there a whole unit. you should have the front rank just getting up, the next rank a bit mroe up, etc, till the back rank or 2 are fully up. or the other way round, with a few stragleres.

Afaik, you get more snotlings than nurglings, and besides, the snotlings are alot cooler! I think they fit as nurglings as both snotlings and nurglings are kinda sneaky and misceivious. :)

As for the skeletons, I have more, but I just thought it was uneccesary to show them here.

Thanks for comment, but do you have cool/good/cheap conversion tips?

perconally i really dont like the nurgle spawn its just...unauthentic.however i do like the nurgle warriors, and the dark riders are really cool, i considered making mine like that but once again college and the midterm got in my way...

anyway they are generally made to a high standard (ish) and they are very creative, Imo metal models are still better , i like the feel to them whereas plastic models seem...more fragile(i know their not though).
i have few questions for the world:
1.who ever though of putting "s" in the word lisp?

2.who made the word for something which means to have problems reading and writting a word like dyslexia?

3. Is there another word for thesaurus?

i have one. instead of forking out for expensive metal executioners, simply cut at the hands and arms of the plastic warriors till there positioned to hold a great weapon and then us a spear head, with the bandage/cloth as the handle. i only made up a few so far, but i'll try to get some pics up. i made them double bladed swords, just cause they look more devestating!

**[edit]**
Well heres some pics. i havn't done much cause well i'm just too lazy! but you can get the idea from the pictures. you'll also notice that they don't rank well atall. i'm going to leave these how they are but the rest i make will only have the one 'blade' (spear head).

Hahaha, this is ultra-interesting and I do find inspiration in it. Definitely your convertive imagination has got a future, what I would recommend would be getting your style much cleaner (both painting and modelling wise) and probably eliminating some unnecessary excesses (blue base sides ??). Looking forward to see more of your works!!

I really, really like your Nurgle stuff, especially the knights, exalted and the spawn. The Chaos Knights conversions are quite good in general, too. I also like the Black Orcs and those mutants.

I don´t very much like the Daemonettes, but you know that already. The Dark Riders are not my favourites either, because I think the helmets don´t look good on them, I have converted one myself (and plan to do more) and I used one of the hooded heads from the Glade Guard box plus a Glade Rider cloak. Buying the Glade Guard box just for the hooded heads would probably be silly, though.

Just my two cents.
It´s nice to be important, but it´s more important to be nice.

First of all it would be good if you took away the mold lines. Drubrushing or spraying your models white and then inking them will not give you good looking models, so I'd suggest learning to blend and highlight (there's a lot of good tutorials out there).
But I do like some of your conversion, you have a lot of good ideas there, for example the mutants look great.

I don't want to be mean or anything, I just tried to write some constructive critisism.

No harm done except...

The last three posts have just been constructive critisism. As I stated in my first post, I'm not trying to show off my work, I've made numerous other threads for that purpose. My intention with this thread was to help people get ideas for cheap and cool conversions as well as substituting metal models for plastic ones. I greatly appreciate constructive critisism, but in this thread I'd rather see all your own budget conversions and ideas you have to give other people(like me :P ) inspiration. So far only Mr_PieChee has contributed and unfourtunatly he hasn't posted any pictures. I know your minds are filled with ideas so please come and share them. No idea is to silly! :D

I've made my Aspect Warriors and special weapon Eldars all out of Guardians and DE Warriors. Fire Dragons are Guardians with GS cloak and some spiky DE bits, DE special weapons have modified Shuriken Catapults etc.. :D

This is raelly cheap and IMO very good looking.

Same can, of course, be done to Havocs and Devastators - they do not differ from rank and file SM at all!

I have build a very cheap necromancer myself.
A friend of mine collects HE and with the archer box comes some extra pairs of legs. I got some of them (standing), and took a spare torso, head and left arm from my zombies. For the right arm i got a spear wielding HE arm, cut of the top and put a round plastic ball on top of it (made from the head of a flail, just cut of the pointy spikey things...) and then you have a (weird looking) necromancer :)

ANd for my dwarves i have made an engieneer out of a spare thunderer, with arms and shield from the Cannon box :)

I have dine the dark riders the same as you and are very pleased with the results. I also converted a noble and sorceress on dark steed with 2 of the glade riders. A little tip I've found for a sea dragon cloak. Mould a cloak (with green stuff) then stab a pen in it alot, it's not perfect and you have to be careful not to unmold it and break it but it works. I would like any better ways to do this please! Sorry I can't add any pictures :(.

look at this:
1 dire wolf pack: 5 pounds for 2 wolves.
1 goblin wolf rider regiment 18 pounds for 10 wolves.
doing math, the packs of wolves cost 25 pounds altogether for 10 wolves, AND you get goblins to add as carcasses and stuff. and it's exactly the same wolves.

Interesting ideas. I managed to make my dark riders cheaper using another match up, that fits my theme. I got my hands on the spiders of the new Battle for Skull Pass goblin spider riders, and combined them with Dark Elf Warriors. I know it must sound very strange, but I'm satisfied with the result. Perhaps I'll try to get some pics taken.

I have a even better way to by certan plastic BITZ instead of buying the whole damn sprue (for insane mark up) go to http://www.bwbits.com/ It may seem like in some cases your paying alot for one bit (often several) but you have to think of the money your saving on buying the sprue. I swear by that site check it out and tell me what you think.

i was thinking of doing something sinilar. i was going to make some drides, but using the spiders as the 'legs' of the warriors, joining them at the head (so that the spider nolonger has a head). i was going to use them as deamonettes for a COS army, but not sure weather ts worth it now...

Yes, I did driders, modelled after the standard D&D monster. I pinned a DE Warrior torso to the front of the spidermount, facing slightly upward, with a gap of about 2 cm, that I filled up with greenstuff. The one finished model has an elongated torso sculpted (poorly... but I'm no good with greenstuff. YET!) I'm considering armour plates or perhaps chainmail skirts for the rest. I also repositioned most of the legs, to raise the front end of the spider 2-3 cm from it's original posture, to create a more imposing height of the drider.
