Movement trays

Post by Swab »

Does anyone else use their own movement trays instead of GWs trays?

Personally, I used CD case covers cut/broken in half because you can fit 6 across and just put the 7th model on the outside.

Using GW's movent trays my self, their form is perfect for terrain, and if you want them too be bigger "Convert" them, just a knife and some Plastic glue, easy.

But CD covers might also work, i just doubt that they are as good as GW's when it come too terrain, but better when having largere ranks like 6+.

i personaly think GW should make new packs with movement trays, some thats for 6 - 7 - 8 ranks.

Take any thin material and use sprue bars as the edges to make custom bases for cheap.

You can also use sheet metal and magnets. Rare earth makes good magnents, old ducts are good sources of sheet metal. Just don't cut yourself on a sharp edge.

I make my own custom ones from the standard GW movement trays. movement trays are cheap and it's easily done with some good glue, sandpaper and a sharp knife.

I custom build my trays to whatever size I need. I start with 1/8" plywood and cut it to size. Then, I take some 1/4" x 1/8" hardwood strips and glue them around the perimeter of the plywood. After the tray is glued up, I paint it, base it, and glue some sheet metal to the ply for the magnetized bases to stick to. Here's a few photos of a couple of trays in progress:

I use a technique very similar to MTN, but instead I've been using plasticard instead of plywood... not gonna lie though, the plywood sounds cheaper and easier to cut on a bandsaw or what have you. May have to try this.

I picked up a ton of the GaleForce 9 (GF9) movement trays on sale at a local retailer. I enjoy them because they come fit to size for whatever formation you choose. Sturdy wood construction that I beveled with a sander and voila, sized to fit trays. Not sure if they are worth it at full retail tho as trays are pretty easy to make.

I use the ones from GW. I never needed bigger/better and I like to save myself the trouble of making new ones. I do paint/base the trays to make them fit with my army better.

I make mine out of plasticard. I buy a pack of sheets that are 1.5 mm thick and then a pack of 2.0 mm x 3.2 mm strips to use as the side rails. It is pretty easy to cut with a hobby knife and the rails are precut. You just have to trim them to length.

I make mine out of GW boxes and 5ish mm wide strips of wood for the bases (cut from popsicle sticks) yeah its super ghetto but one they are based and painted up you barely notice, and you can make them whatever size you want very easily.

I use the mold frames that you get in regiment boxes. Cut away all the small things that pops out here and there.. Turn them upside down and glue them on a carbon box base ( I think )
Then they kind have this angle. --> /, same angle as the model bases, so they easily just slide in to each other // :)
and you get like 5 milimiters to base, so it looks pritty cool.

I use a combination of homemade ones from layers of the cardboard the boxed sets come in, and ones I bought from someone who made them out of a good plastic. I have a few GW trays too. GF9 is supposed to be pretty good too. gf9.com

I have not flocked this one yet. But as ( you hopefully ) see; there is 5 Millimeters flat space to make up some cool basing on.

Models slides easy in.

I use metal plates cut to the exact shape of the units I am using.
Every mini had a piece of magnatic foil under it's base. That way you can
transpot them easy and you don't have to put all minis all seperate in a bo.
You place all units at once. And besides, you do not have to discuss with your
oponent if he can reach your unit. Often you have a discussion of the movement
tray is the units edge or not.

I use 5mm sheets of high density polystyrene/styrofoam. It's availabe from most hardware/craft shops here in Japan and relatively cheap too. It's easy to cut and glues to gether with PVA. A bit o' aquarium sand and a lick of paint and there you go.
