The brand new War Hydra - WIP

I decided to go with a scenic base for this one O: !
3 heads to attach and then I need to fix it to the base, and of course at the end of the painting job I will be adding crystals to the bases just like every other model I have in my druchii army (:

I would consider ditching the tree at the front of the base. I think it will end up obscuring the model too much. Also, it gives a weird lack of balance to the composition have both tree on the same side.

I like the look, I wish I could base to that standard. did you make the tree yourself or was it purchased looking like that? Personally I am waiting till I figure out how the hydra will look completed before I make the base, but now you can adjust the hydra to fit the base. Once again it looks really great. How much green stuffing of gaps did you need to do and how hard was it to pin? pretty standard?

Are you planning to do the Beastmasters in the same pattern? It would be interesting to see what you do with it, I look forward to the results.

Everything fits right into each socket except 1 neck being a bit too large so more greenstuff will be needed, but the rest is all very easy and minimal gaps to greenstuff.

As for the base, the trees are from the fences in the buildings kits from GWShop. Rest is cork and gravel.

I made it this way, both trees somewhat on the same side (the back tree isn't on the edge but closer to the center,), because not everything has to be symetrical, not every side of the base has to have the same amount of objects, the Hydra could just be passing close to the trees and not be in a forest, I like it this way. And the trees.. they won't overshadow the hydra, that's a certainty.

I'd second that.

how can a small tree obscure such a large hydra? I like that look, i dont like it when models have huge objects which follow them around all game like the rock on the dragon model but this is fine.

As for the hydra itself, im a jelous, jelous man - it looks so good!

I think it looks great regardless. I see no reason why it shouldn't be fine, but for some reason it doesn't quite seem right if you get what I am saying. I think it feels like there should be more tree ruins spread evenly throughout the base instead of focused on one side. Cause as you said it is just passing thru. Maybe if it was clear that the hydra was on the edge of a ruined forest.

The hydra legs that connect to the ground have little tabs that you can use to connect to the base.

had the tabs and drilled a couple of holes on the base. the problem I have is with all the heads and the front left foot not being on the ground, the hydra tips and falls over onto the front-left.

its an awesome model. and I plan to field 2 of these in my next game.

GW has outdone themselves with this model. (and with the COKs as well.)

I like the way you based it. But maybe I'd add something on Hydra's left, like a fallen trunk.
Those heads towering the trunks are incredible. I think this time we have a nice hydra. I'll get it.
Is that a chariot base? Is ti provided with the hydra?

Why do not paint the trunks burned? Like the Hydra just had a nice BBQ?

Well like I said, the base will only be done after its painted, adding a cluster of crystals on the left side of the hydra.

Yes the base comes with the Hydra, it is a chariot base.
And with my army theme, the wood will be dark but not burnt, since the ground itself is ash-like.

Also I have no balance issue with mine - it needs to be at over a 45 degree angle upward before falling on its heads

Looks really menacing! I'm lookin forward to assemble mine. How will you transport it? I'll probably pin the necks to be able to remove them for a more comfortable way of transporting them.

Really love the trees as they put the hydra's size into perspective making it seem even larger.

Yea you need to green stuff small gaps in the neck so pinning and removing heads wont work. I would get either cloth or bubble wrap or both and find a box about the same size as the hydra. That's how I transported my wraithlords. and since hydra has a solid base it should be fine.

Hmm I have a box like this one
http://www.biltema.se/Archive%5CProduct ... -250_l.jpg

It's really handy. I'll probably cut a hole like the size of the hydra and store all my plastic beside it (I've filled the whole box with madrass in which I have cut holes for models). And In the two top boxes will be storage for metal models.

EDIT: Ah btw did you have to pin the necks?

What i have done personally is magnetize all my bases and then put a thin steel sheet in the base of my container, They dont go anywhere

thats actually a pretty neat idea. I bought a £30 GW box for smaller models but my brothers wood elves hijacked it, and since i cut it to fit his cavalary and treeman i dont see much point asking for it back.

I'll probably but another one for the minis, i feel they are really good even if expensive, and then buy a simple toolbox for larger models - might try the magnet technique masterofdarkness mentioned for the hydra. Dont want it breaking once i get it.

Looks good. I picked up my spearhead today and it looks like the hyrda will require a good bit of gap filling and related work to assemble properly but the model is fierce and imposing looking.

It's safe to say the tree up front does NOT obscure the Hydra ^^

Cheers. Great base too. Mine is waiting for a base-job at home so I'll be stealing your idea methinks :D

Yes but the hole I'll cut will be shaped just for the hydra so I don't think it'll break.
