I really hadn't tried this out because I thought that the dragon was meant for fighting and the sorceres was meant for avoid fighting.
Anyway how do you equip her? I would personally take PoK focus and lifetaker.
Why wont you just take a DP?
could you please post something more about her like equipment ,tactics etc?

Yep, lifetaker, PoK and Focus Familiar. I am getting used to using her but she gives good bonus's. I try to use her as a major deterrant who can't be terrored off, good shooting flexible casting. She can engage in combat and still cast spells which is the main bonus. Also against armies with a lot of magic you have good magic defense but the important thing is to kill the support 1st as it reduces the threats to her. i.e S3 shooting. I will do a write up after the GW GT

It sounds rather good actually ,might try it.
looking forward to hear from you after the GT! :)
One more question: do you have more casters or is she enough?

How can she engage in close combat and cast spells?

I field my sorcerer on a dragon all the time right now.

Black Staff because I only have one more level 2 mage so need a bit of more force to get trough stronger magic defences
And Pendant of Khaeleth to stay alive.

Works wonders. Flies around, charges smaller units and kills them. Can even kill full infantry blocks (as long as they aren't too elite) with a flank/rear charge.

Only spells he can't cast in combat are magic missiles due to sitting on a huge dragon and seeing over most enemies anyway.

All in all I definitely don't regret the choice of mount.

I have also used my lvl 4 on a dragon to great sucess.

While it means you cant just charge almost anything you want mindlessly as you would with your unkillable dreadlord, it still hits hard enough to take on most units in the flank or rear and can cast some pretty devastating spells from in close. Soul stealer anyone :D

I like to use it with pendant and focus familiar, maybe lifetaker if I have the points to spare.
If I had a knife I would shoot you

Give me a dark pegasus any day. Just as good at every phase but combat, and with enough points left over to buy a hydra to do the whole combat part. I've tried the Dragon sorc before, and it works just fine. I can't help but feel like it's just not a sound investment though.

I've actually been wanting to try out this idea for a while, good to hear that other people have had success with it. It sounds like PoK and Focus Familiar are must haves, I'll mess around with other combinations and the army list.

Focus Familiar is far from a must have. Being on Large Target helps immensely.
Focus Familiar will only help with those pesky targets that end up behind you, or casting magic missiles from combat.

Wouldn't she still have LOS from combat?

Sure, close combat doesn't block line of sight. models do. If you're a large target then being in combat with smaller targets doesn't block your line of sight.

Not that it matters in most cases. But the specific one of large target wizard means you can cast spells from combat. Apart from obvious magic missiles.

Would it be worth taking the PoK, Focus Fam and Hydras teeth. That way you can throw them at warmachines and destroy them with the cc rules of the teeth or finish off a unit that you have just breathed on. An eg would be to fly 20" and land near 1 warmachine and in Los of another warmachine. You can destroy 1 with the teeth and be in Los of the other for a next turn charge.

When I played mine the 3 other players of the game told me "you're in combat, you cannot see out of it" and I was charging Ork bowmen... I will check this on the book tonight.

My equipment was: Black Staff and Ring of Darkness.
I think the Ring of Dark isn't interesting, better to have PoK and the spell to get some heal.

You should've asked them to show you the rule in BRB.

It wasn't a big problem, we won and I cast the spell to recover a lost wound :) I will verify as I will play on Sunday

Dalamar is 100% correct. The only benefit of the Focus Familiar, from a close combat perspective, is that it allows the Sorceress to cast magic missles while in combat (or when fighting other Large Targets).

Don't forget that it enables her to cast spells backwards etc to, it can be a huge benefit, especially if you side charge with the dragon. (and thus is looking in an akward direction.

I'm personally not to keen on the dragon mage though, the idea is cool, she is very durable, but it is just to expencive, for the same cost, I get a high sorc on a peggy, a hydra, and a unit of dark riders.

But what you don't get is a T6 W6 monstrous mount which puts up one hell of a fight.

No, and I also get worse LoS, since I am not a large target.

I do howver get the same punch (hydra), similair breath capabilites (again Hydra), the same mobility (flight), better harasment / marchblooking (DR), and most importantly the ability 'to be in multiple places at once'.

I personally feel that a dragon mage is mostly usfull in rather large battles 2.25 -2.5 K at the least, she can be made to work well in a normal 2K battle as well, but I would normally prefer to get more normal units, since I usally have a lot of slots left over.

It is however, definitly a very cool lord choice, IMO the throne on the high elf dragon just have such a wonderfull feel for a mage, crusing around the battle field and casting spells on leser creatures ;)

I'm thinking of using her in conjunction with a master on manticore, but i'm not sure on her item setup...
- Staff + PoK
- Familiar + Lifetaker + PoK
Being the only mage I guess the staff is the better option to at least get a couple of spells off...
