Malekith: More useless than we thought?

Post by Zardock »

Just been reading through my AB this morning, and I realised that Malekith does not have the Druchii Sorcery special rule and so cannot use unlimited PD to cast his spells...

Just wondering if people already noticed this? Tried the search function but my Laptop doesn't let it work for some reason.

Anyway, I feel kind of cheated that the Witch King himself is limited in his magical power whilst a mere Level 1 sorceress can go all out if she so wishes.

I believe he got it back in the errata.

But then again, when was the last time you used more than 5 PD on a spell?

Yeah I realised that after I posted... Druchii sorcery really only helps our lower level casters. Still there might be the odd situation where it could have come in handy right?

Not really. On any spell avaialble to the Dark Elves, rolling 6 dice actually results in a lower percentage chance to cast than 5 dice due to the increased chance of miscasts.

I can potentially see a use for it if you manage to end up having lost some spells through miscasts and find yourself with extra Power of Darkness dice but... incredibly rare niche case.

And you would you not rather gamble on an S4 hit or two than a Miscast?

then he deserves to die for sheer incompetence - he wouldnt permit it in any other elf so in this case he has to abide by his own rules!

If you don't place him on a dragon, and instead on foot (in black guard) or on a cold one (in Knights) he's actually surprisingly good.
He makes the unit nigh immune to magic. You only need to find a way to protect them from shooting and you have a mini-death star.

My problem with Malekith is that his amour is just crap against magic attacks. In almost all the fluff around him he is nigh unstoppable in combat, basically hes a pocket nuke in the fluff, so hes not used much I have noticed. Back on topic, he can just be popped by 1 KB. Does that seem right to you? Didn't think so.

No, doesn't seem right at all. Perhaps if you reread the armour entry'll find that it doesn't seem right because it isn't. (He can't ever suffer more than a single wound from a hit.)

Play him in BG and he has a champ with crimson death and an assassin to protect him from magic weapons, plus the ASF banner to give him a chance to destroy their magic weapon.

Magic attacks:
Spells - Awesome MR, usually killing the offending wizards.
Weapons - Make use of that Destroyer!

And he can't be KBd or killed by a cannonball, at least not outright.
Hope he gets Soul Stealer and with 6 wounds he's pretty much unkillable.

His weakness is his mount. On a Dragon he has a huge "Hit Me" sign painted on him... or rather on the dragon. Kill the dragon and Malekith is really at a disadvantage.
Chariot is better off if you know for sure you won't face any S7 ranged attacks... and to some extend S7 melee attacks (as those can be avoided).
He's best used in BG with ASF banner, or in a solid unit of CoKs.
