[plog] Durloths Moriquendi Marauders MK2

Post by Durloth »

I`ve been slowly painting my second Dark Elf army over the last year or so, after I sold my last one (about 9000pts.) to make myself a fresh start. I`ve been keeping a plog of the Dark Elves and some other stuff here: http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=190654 and that is where I`ll keep posting random stuff and WiPs.

D.net was my first WFB-related forum, and even though my posting the last couple of years have been sporadic to say the least, it has always kept a special place in my (oh so cold) heart. Therefore I thought I`d make a tidy little plog here, with pictures of what I finish for my Dark Elves.

I`m not that pleased with the banner and think I`ll redo it, when I have some time to spare. I don`t really know why, but I never got around to basing them...

Not much to say, really. Quite pleased with the red, but the rest is kind of boring. I originally planned to add some grey scrollwork on the black side of the cloak, but ended up not doing it, as to make it less garish.

I`m quite pleased with him. The shield design looks a bit pink, but it`s mostly the poor lighting. I don`t know which magic dohickeys he`s going to get, so I went safe and modeled him with a sword and RxB.

Noble on foot:
The pictures turned out so terrible that there`s only one kind of worth posting of him.

RBT: Done exept crew and base

Sorceress: I`m rather pleased with the way she turned out. The colours on the swirls took away some of her sinister look, but I wanted to grab the chance of adding some more colours into the army, without breaking the uniform.
Image

Baboon faced Sorceress: This is the third and last AoW mini I`m painting. Ever. The minis look good at a distance, but all his elves have really horrible faces and a lot of details are really not practical for minis that are used for gaming (Sorceresses dragons head and heros` loincloth thingie both breaks incredibly easy) and I`m really not too pleased with the quality of the cast.

That`s it for now. There are WiPs of my CoK and CoB on the Plog at Warseer. I`m also working on Lokir Fellheart, ten executioners and fifteen black guard at the moment.

Everything here could use a nice wash. Something bluish for the metal, something brown for the orange, and whatever else you feel. Do fix up that banner ; the design is good but it needs tidying up. I really like your first noble, that is a perfect pose for an ambitious young Master. Thumbs up. And thumbs up for giving the Dreadlord a great hammer thingy, that looks plenty lordly.

I like this army, just tidy it up a bit, and it will be beautiful.

@Lachlan: Thank you! The cauldron (or rather Khainite statue from Juza Miniatures) itself and the handlers are done. I just have to finish the base and wait for some decent light (which is some times hard to come by in Norway during winter) and I`ll get some pictures up.

@Layne: Thank you and I love a bit of constructive critisism; without it I would never improve. I know that some more colours in the metal would realy make it look more interesting and I guess I applied the purple and blye washes I`ve used too early. It is just that I think it is really scary to wash over an area that is practically done. I`m so afraid I`ll ruin the whole paint job and have to start over again. But you are right. I`ll man up and try to be bolder with both washes and glazes in the future. Are you Layne from Spayne on Warseer by the way?

Keep the C&C coming guys:)

I'm loving the orange colour scheme, works very well indeed, but I think your skin needs a bit more blending. It's only really noticable on the pair of sorcerresses though (probably due to just how much skin is on display), so not a big gripe.

@Desmodeus: Thanks! Over the last batch of minis I`ve been experimenting a lot with different ways to paint metal and skin (the way the sorceress and last hero are painted was nicked from the `Eavy Metal article on painting a High Elf prince on dragon.) and seeing the same problems as you, I`m going to keep experimenting and would love some pointers:) Next time I paint a mini showing much skin, I plan on trying GeOrcs method of priming white over black.

Unfortunatley I'm not so great a painter myself; so whereas I can spot a problem I'm not so good at fixing it. ^_^;

Perhaps simply not using quite so dark a tone for the shadows or simply leave less of it showing (at least on the sorcs' as it works well with the rest of your army): this might do the trick?

Love the paint theme

The dark riders are absolutely amazing! I love it!

The Noble with Halberd is awesome to!

Keep up the good work! :)

@Tribun: Vielen Dank!

@Desmodeus: I think that and some better blending on the last bits of highlight would have gone a long way. Maybe I`ll go over the deepest shadows with some lighter paint, or would that only destroy the efferct, do you think?

@Jebnus: Thank you! I`ll try to take a better picture of the Noble, so you can judge how he looks in daylight...

I don`t want to clutter this thread with WiP shot, so I would just like to point your attention towards my "cauldron" here:

Perhaps if you simply dragged the midtones slightly further into the darker tones on certain parts of the AoW model (specificaly the armpits, under the breasts, the navel and the area of the thigh around the flesh hooks) and, as you say, blended the highlights on the GW Sorceress more?

As I say, it's just the Sorceresses; the rest of your models' skin tones look great. I'm not sure I'm being much help though. :P

@Lachlan: The mini was made by Juza http://juza-miniaturas.blogspot.com/ Sadly the mould broke so he never made more than 35 of them.

@Desmodeus: I think you`re right. Will do that when I bring her out of my case for basing.

I'm surprised (and I don't know why) that so much red really works on the minis. I always think of more subdued trim, spots of color, etc, and not as a main theme. Impressive!
