Creation of the dark horde *pic thread* (updated 11/06/2007)

Post by Soulreaper »

Well. I did it finally ^^ I took some pictures of the parts of my new army that are finished.

here's the list of what will be in here when all finished
EDIT: I no longer have a standing list, so I've reworked this topic to include all of my units painted in this scheme (and those that I intend to paint)

http://www.druchii.net/viewtopic.php?t=42720

latest finishes in green

Finished so far:
1x Noble
1x Mini-Manticore(rider pending)
2x Sorceress
1x Assassin
20xWarriors with shields and spears
20xWarriors with shields and spears
10x Warriors with shields and rxb's
5x Dark riders
5x Dark riders
12x Corsairs
5x Harpies
5x Harpies
10x Executioners
1x Cold one knight (missing shield atm)
1x Black Guard Musician
1x Reaper bolt thrower with crew
1x Hydra

Still left to do:
1x Noble
1x Mini-Manticore-riding-noble
1x Death Hag
6x Corsairs
5x Shades
4x Cold one knights
13x Black Guard
14x Witch elves

and here are the links:

Noble:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3263
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3264
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3265
The noble should actually have a Shield of Ghrond too.
but I haven't modelled that up yet...
I'll get a pic or two when I've finished that ;)
oh.. and he got a sword makeover since the sword wasn't flashy enough
so new pics are up now

Sorceress 1:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3393
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3394
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3395
I made the staff myself ^^
95% green stuff. just a bit of thin steel wire as a base.

Sorceress nr 2:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3730
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3731
OK! She's been on my shelf for 2 years or so waiting for a paintjob... I had difficulty working out just how I was going to paint her... Mainly the staff.
I decided that I would make the swirly things look like magical energy. I think it turned out decent... some minor light sourcing and stuff.
Don't like her legs though.. they look out of place.. thinking I should probably have left that spot black...

Dark Riders:
Single:

http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3242
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3243
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3244
Unit:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3254
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3255
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3256
converted from glade riders. hoods, scarfs and some weapon swaps mostly. :)

Dark rider unit 2:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3728
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3729
Spear armed dark riders this time. it'd be boring to have 2 units exactly the same IMO. when I was fixing the pics i noticed that only one of the dark riders actually has any eyebrows...
gotta fix that...

Warriors:
Champ:

http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3184
Unit:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3188
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3189
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3190
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3191
There will be 3 of these units, but as they all look basically the same I'll only post one.

Corsairs:
Single:

http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3185
Unit:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3270

Executioners:
Champion:

http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3177
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3178
(i'm quite proud of this one :D except that the axe might seem a bit slaaneshy.. I didn't intend for that to happen. )
Single:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3259
Dark picture... wouldn't turn out like I wanted it to
the Draich has the same colour as the champs axe does if that's not visible.
Unit:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3261
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3262
ok.. so the unit isn't finished.. but you can't really see the second rank
behind the first anyways.. so i thought i'd take a pic.. ;)

Cold one Knights:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3251
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3252
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3253
well there you go..;) a knight finally finished. although he's missing his shield unfortunately... haven't finished it yet. (I hate painting shields :P)

Dark Sprites:
Single:

http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3179
Unit:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3245
This would be my version of harpies. I absolutely HATE those vile things that GW produces..
they're utterly horrible.. (sorry GW )

Reaper bolt thrower:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3266
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3267
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3268
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3269
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3734
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3735
Crew:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3736
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3737
I added a Custom base made from a 10 man movement tray and some cardboard to fill it. the "quiver" thing is from small pieces of movement tray glued together and green stuffed. the arrows are paperclips and green stuff.
I thought the corsair crew fit in quite well with the fluff, and I don't like the original models. only problem I have is with my second reaper (for 2250 battles) don't wanna use the same exact crew models...

Extras:

Turn Counter:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3272

Hydra:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3186
This isn't actually a part of the tourny army...
but it's painted in the same scheme so i might as well put it in here

Cold One:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3180
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3181
Size comparison pics:

I included some regular GW models as to better judge the actual size of these monstrous beasts.
This, in my mind, is what a cold one should look like.
it is supposed to be a 1.5-2.5 ton predatory dinosaur after all. these ones actually look like it! and honestly...
I think the hydra is waaay too small
but so are all monsters in warhammer... it's for gameplay purposes, I know... :P

Horse for new noble:
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3732
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3733
Seeing as the list has changed a little now that I had to adapt to 7th edition, all my characters on foot models that I put so much work into have become obsolete... My new list includes 3 mounted characters instead.
As I haven't gotten around to getting those models yet I can only show you the horse for my new noble. It's a dark pegasus model that I had lying around in my bit box.

Woodie nr1 (WIP, almost finished)
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3396
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3397
http://www.druchii.net/album_page.php?pic_id=3398
ok.. so I'm missing a colour i need to finish this guy.. i'll get that in a few days. but I liked this guy so much i felt like showing him anyways :) oh and btw. this is what my models look like without varnish on :P (I also purchased a better matt varnish now so these guys aren't gonna be shiny. wouldn't suit a wood elf to be shiny...)
I loved painting his cloak. looks really nice imo.
His eyes however were a pain in the a$$ they're even harder to paint than an executioners eyes!!! (and that's saying something...)
took me 8 tries to get those right...

well. that's about it so far. some of the pictures are a bit brighter and some are a bit dark.
that's because the camera used flash sometimes and sometimes it didn't...
I really don't know why. it's not my camera...

any complaints, constructive criticism, jubilations or just a plain old pat on the back for some good work would be appreciated :D
or maybe even a recommendation for the "Elite" album? *crosses fingers*

oh, also feel free to rate the pictures...

Currently working on:
Revarnishing models with matt varnish
Not sure what my next project will be actually. probably a noble or something.

Hi, I really like your work
a) great colour schemes
b) I agree with you, axe is better for executioners
c) I don't like new cold ones (I use 5th editione cold ones with 6th edition knights) and harpies

BUT.. why glossy colours? :? it is no good...
I think dark sprites don't match at all with harpies background...at the moment I use old harpies but I'm planning to convert some demonettes.
GW hydras ARE too small !evil!

you really like gloss varnish, don't you !wink!

I think it is the first time I see a painted GZ Cold One by a member of this site. Man, these beasts are impressive!! It's a pity the pictures aren't always that sharp, but I really like the armour. Perhaps you created a more 'natural' contrast by only varnishing the armour with gloss varnish, but that's my personal taste.
Overall, quite neat paintjob. But I think the Hydra and the cold one could use some more highlights..

actually. most of the parts of the models are coated in matt varnish. it just seems glossy :? maybe I bought a bad batch of it or something  the armour however is coated with gloss varnish because... I simply like it shiny ^^ kinda like rubies ;) looks really nice IRL. but I admit it does look a little odd on phtotographs

the dark sprites actually have a bit of a story attatched to them.
in short, they follow my general around because he has a very magical spirit (ever read about there being dark sprites hanging around magically strong people, snatching babies and such..? well these are some of the larger ones of those :D )
that's the way i justify for them being on the battlefield.. they follow my generals strong magical field and steal shiny stuff ;)

@ilokir. if you're talking about me needing some highlights on the black of the cold one and hydra, the hydra actually has quite a bit of highlighting. it's just not visible in photos.

the cold one however doesn't. simply because when i higlighted the black on it he seemed.. dull.. and grey.. I didn't like it at all. looked really bad. so I kept him all black :)

Looking good man :)

Seeing those gamezone Cold Ones painted makes me quite tempted, tho Im sure they are a million times more expensive to me than even the 5th ed metal Cold Ones (being staff), anyone have a link to the gamezone store?

Am I correct in thinking the Executioner champs axe is from Vargas Metatron, a Dirz character from confrontation?

a trick comic-artists use for light interference on black surfaces is the use of blue instead of grey to indicate the enlighted parts. When you paint hair, for example, you can use dark blue instead of grey. When using grey, there is a chance of you model looking like a stone. You have to use inks to 'correct' this, while using dark blue as highlight, you don't have to use ink, when applied correctly.. I don't know how this would turn out on your cold one, but you have to try it on hair, for instance a beard of a dwarf.. !wink!

My experience is that you local non-GW dealer can order them, that's the way I received them

Great pics. The only thing i don't like... is the mass usuage of the gloss varnish. BUT it does look amazing on the skin of the cold ones and the hydra. I just think the glossyness takes away from the natural look, but other than that, the painting is good in my mind, its got the proper shading, and the red catches my eye, i actually had my army going with the same sort of theme haha. But i havn't painted in a long time, no time really. Someone let me use some stuff to paint over my ogre that i put to much gloss on...and it took sum of the shine off and looked better, maybe look into that...unless u like the plastic/cartoony look of it.

That's great!
Thanks for the size comparisons!

Now I have only one problem: you used the same color scheme I was planning on using and I don't want to paint a whole army knowing that out there is army allmost like mine...
oh well, your army is better painted than my army could ever be.

Ghehehehe, the red you mean?
I love red, thats why I painted mine red aswell (2 years ago, and still using it).
Red is just a great colour with witch you can really create a "Whow" effect if you
use it concequent. And atleast the red works for me because I won severall
"Best painted army awards" with this coloursceme. (my sig.)

But I like your "blending", but the glosh varnish does'nt work imho. I'dd replace it
with red ink or just use glosh varnish only on weapons or slimy things. I would use
more contrast aswell in the armour, more contrast means more detail (witch is'nt
really there, you only sugest its there).
But the overall look is good.
You’re a wreck, an accident.

ok now lets see if we can reply to everything here :D

@MDK
I actually know your army looks very similar to mine. the dark sun army right? ;) but I didn't know that at the time i thought up the scheme  and mine is actually somewhat darker in the blending on the red, it just got alot brighter in the pictures unfortunately...
If you'd like, could you explain a little more about how you meant with contrast increasing detail? I'd love to hear about it cause I didn't quite understand that
oh and btw. it's actually 4-9 variatons of red+black mix.(depending on how large the areas of red are. You can only fit in so many blends on a small area.. ^^) followed by a coat of red ink (as suggested, but it's already there to tie the colours together.) and then varnished.

@The watcher
I'd also prefer if you didn't..
I kinda like the "uniqueness" (although several armies around the world are probably very similar, I know.)

@Benji
thanks :)
and no. unfortunately I haven't even converted the riders yet. I did convert one a while ago. but I accidentally dropped it on the floor and it shattered:(
I couldn't even repair it. It also had a different kind of cold one. also shattered... but that one looked alot like a steed of slaanesh anyways
the reason why I haven't done the riders yet is because of the amount of time and effort it takes to actually make them. they are quite heavily converted. all that filing, drilling and green stuff action requires patience.. which i'm currently a bit low on ^^
and yes. even with knights on them these cold ones do rank up nicely. :D

@Haplo
no problem. I knew alot of people were wondering how big they are :)

@the fearless
as explained earlier. there actually isn't THAT much gloss varnish. the hydra I have to admit i spraypainted the varnish on him.. but i think it looks nice still. (laziness ftw! )
the cold one is actually mainly matt varnish. the skin for example. that's matt varnish, not gloss. it just came out that way :?
anyways. it looks less glossy IRL. the camera can really be brutal to paintjobs ;) I mean all my SDC's look blue while in fact they're scaly green-hawk turqoise. (all of the "blue" details are)
but personally. I like the glossy look (as it looks IRL anyways :P ) but if i get tons of complaints IRL when i bring them to a tournie. i'll think about making them less glossy ;) anyone know any way to do that? maybe a matt varnish coat on top of the glassy one makes it better? I don't know.. ^^

@Ilokir
actually I knew about this blue on black thingy already. I just never really thought it looked very nice :? but that's just my oppinion...
and besides I don't think it fits very well on monsters and such.
black leather and hair? sure. reptile skin? nope ;)

@Xizor
thanks ^^
I purchased my cold ones from: http://www.e-minis.net
the site is in spanish but you can do as I did and translate the whole site using babelfish: http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr ("Översätt en webbsida" is the place you want. since it's in swedish.)
makes it much easier.

They aren't really that expensive. 9.26€ a piece (with riders that are very fat for some reason :P) so go ahead and buy some :) I think they ship anywhere. I got my models after just a few days here in sweden.

and yes. you are correct. the axe is from Vargas metatron. keen observation ;)
However I did some reworking on it. it had lots of gears and stuff on it that i had to remove and smooth out with green stuff. and i had to replace the handle.

alright. i think that's it.. keep em coming  but no more complaints about the gloss.. I already explained it ;) it's not my fault the matt varnish looks glossy too! :P

edit: wow I just realised I use alot more smileys than everyone else.. ^^

Wow..

I really like your paintjob, very good. I also like the axe on the Executioner, those Cold Ones look scary! I just don't like the gloss.. they all look slimy, could be the lighting though, I'm, not sure.

You even got in to the eyes on the Draich Master. Nice work man!

bah.. people still comenting on the gloss. well. i'm not gonna say anything more about that, i've already explained it ^^

@Fr0
I did get the eyes yeah ^^ thanks for noticing such a small thing
only problem is the scuplting on those eyes is horrible. one eye is about a millimeter higher up than the other one. from the front he looks... deformed  but yeah. I always paint the eyes.. why should executioners be any different? ;) (even though it's hard work painting in that tiny crevace :P)

good point about the lighting there.. maybe i got that wrong.. i'm not much for using a camera.. maybe that's why they look so glossy

@GoddessFlesh
well sure.. but slaaneshi looking weapon on an executioner which is deeply devoted to khaine.. doesn't really work now does it ;) but as noted earlier, it wasn't intentional.

Sure I could tell you how i painted it. but i'd have to know exactly what part "it" refers to first ;)

This:
I purchased my cold ones from: http://www.e-minis.net

and this:
and yes. even with knights on them these cold ones do rank up nicely.

Are the 2 things I have been waiting for! i can now order my gamezone coldones, YAY! Thanks man!

I really like your painting too. It's even good enough to overshadow all that gloss varnish (just!). I do suspect that a lot of the effect is from the camera though, rather than the models themselves.

Well done, and thanks again mate.

@Ant
No problem. Glad I could help! :D
a note though. even if they rank up nicely next to each other, some of them are still a bit large on the base so the head will stick out a bit in front. so getting them into base to base contact with enemies might be a tad difficult. but I dont think that should stop you from getting these awesome models :)
and yes.. alot of the "Gloss" effect is because of the camera. although my matt varnish is kinda glossy.. odd.. ^^

Well... Uhm... I think me and my perverted mind are gonna leave that one alone...

anyways...
It was painted bu using a chaos black undercoat. then I used warlock purple mixed with black toa very dark shade. and then i gradually put in more and more warlock purple. when it was just pure warlock purple I switch to mixing it with skull white instead, making it brighter and brighter. I finished off with a final highlight with pure skull white. this looked really nice for one. but i then took a final step.
I watered down some warlock purple to ink form (well close to ink anyways) and coated the entire blade (the painted part not the black one ;) ) This ties all the highlights together and caused it to turn out quite... pink... ^^

that's about it ^^ If there's anything else, just ask. :)

@Zurvidol
as previously stated in the thread those are gamezone cold ones. you can purchase them from e-minis. links are higher up in the thread ;)
