But I play not often, I am lazy and my brain cell are getting old, so I'd rather rely on my sons for remembering such stuff (including my own troop's stats). For the rules, I am usually better than them at remembering them, but we always need to go back to the BRB and erratas. That makes LOOOOONNNNG games indeed, but hey, that's good time in family!

Of course you remember stats! And point cost of everything! Well, maybe not the exact statline and exact values, but I often find myself asking what the statline of something is, already knowing the answer but just making sure it's what it is before I cast a spell at it or charge in. Also, the value of your opponents forces is important, as it makes it clearer what you have to do to win the game. Maybe it's just because I've joined a really competetive club and got plenty of games this last year, but most of these things stick. Spells as well... When it comes to dark elves, I rarely need to check the book. I don't even need to check the cost of things... it's already one of those useless informations that my brain keeps storing. Helps me in games to know these things though

same here, last list i composed (i'm not one for a standard list) i did from the top of my head in my lunch break @ work. After checking it at home it was 2518, so 18 points over. Stats i dont need check either. The thing that gets me, is general rules and different editions. I've been playing this game since 5th edition, so sometimes it's like ... "Yeah i Know you were allowed to do that, i just cant remeber if you're still allowed to do that in this edition

You know it's going to be a looooong game when your opponent pulls out a small calculator to calculate the stats of theoretical engagements before he declares his charges.
I told the guy to call me over once he has made his decisions. Where I promptly took a place at my painting table and worked on a unit while he was fiddling with his numbers. Seriously ...
In his defence, he was kind of new and quite anal. So I cut him some slack and got some painting done too.

HaHa, well at least you brought something else to do. You're my kind of player, very laid back & understanding, Kudos!

I was warned about him. The manager suggested that I could bring some painting to work on. I didn't really mind. Although it is kind of hard to set a piece down mid-stroke almost. But, I was only putting on the base coat so no real precision needed.

When did snaking disappear? Also, you know it's gonna be a long game when it's 4k and your opponent turns up without designing his army list first.....

Snaking went the way of the dodo in 7th edition. 6th still allowed it but it was a silly formation. People still use conga lines though, they're just not as flexible as proper snaking.

I tried once to post a thread here on my local web site about how the hit and wound armor save and shooting system worked. It got laughed off and the thread derailed into silly shiz. You can try to teach all you want but if the audience does not care or just would rather joke about....

For me, I know it's going to be a long game when: * the opponent has to write his army list before we start, and can't read his own handwriting after about the third revision. * a backseat gamer strolls over to the table to offer tactical insights. * my opponent spends more than 10 minutes telling me how awesome his army will look just as soon as it's painted. * there's a real life thing that distracts my opponent every 5 minutes, be it angry birds, how their friend is getting on in their game two tables over or phone calls from their girlfriend. Doubly so if they ask me to explain what just happened each time they return to the game. * People who whine every time anything goes against them, or gloat every time the dice go their way. Sure, the occasional exclamation to the fickle nature of the dice gods is to be expected, but there are some people I've played who punctuate every single turn of the dice with their view of their fate...
@darkelvesct; as a long time dwarf player, I have to say your opponenet was doing it wrong if that's how he played! No true darwi should have an elf player beat him to the bar, or lack the hospitality to get the first round in (though if you didn't stand your round in return expect to have a grudge declared).

*bows down before mods* Please forgive the blatant threadomancy, but I saw this and had to reply 'cause I'd been thinking about some of my old battles. There was this 2000 pts 7 Ed. game against O&G with two younger gamers, one was v. sporting, etc. but the other was a little brat. He clearly didn't know the rules for his own army, let alone mine. He demanded I take panic tests for flagellants and tried to pretend he "forgot" to roll animosity for his half the army. I turned to the other lad and asked him to take over the whole force before the guy backed down.....

Some fun battles of mine: 8000pts Druchii vs empire and brets. That was one loooong game.
3000pts skaven warrior clan list with way over 200 models. Sombody said more than once: "My god! Thats a lot of skaven!"
3000pts deamons of tzeentch back in the 7th. Very ugly and short battle.
