Topic: Is the Ring of Hotek a Must?

Based on advice and anecdotal stories from this forum, I have taken the Ring of Hotek in many lists. And in my experience, it has not once performed as advertised.

In my opinion, yes, it's a waste of 25 points.

Not a perfect answer, true. This question has resurfaced many times.

Game mechanics answer: GW is likely providing an easy way of representing "hidden" without having to either remember an extra model for the host unit or sacrificing the point value of a single model.

The leadership used wasn't the Assassins no. Thanks for the advice though man. It would be interesting if that was the case. One thing that is a bit odd for me is that the Assassin is displaced as well rather than replaced. Where was he hiding then?!? Can you pick out a single person skulking in/be...

Re: The Red Blades

Do the Red Blades count as paired magic weapons (and thus grant the additional +1 Attack as per AHW)? Never interpret fluff and appearance as rules. In this instance, as others have said, since the rules don't list the Red Blades as having the Additional Hand Weapon quality, then they don't. The sa...

You used to be able to dump the ring somewhere in the middle of your army and have a good two thirds of your units (due to the 12" bubble) become all but immune to magic.... Yeah, right. In 7th edition I included the Ring of Hotek in multiple lists. My opponents, regardless of magic level, nev...

Flamers of Tzeench: d6 attacks per at BS4 S4 (or is it S5?), which, by the way, they also get as a stand and shoot reaction along with the skirmishing, T4, W2. The 18" range is the only thing which makes these things survivable. (Unless they've changed since the last time I've seen them across ...

1) You get to roll for power dice as normal (2d6) and any character with a bound item can roll to cast the bound spell. The caster level in this case is 0, however. So, if your lord has an bound item with a casting value of 3 and the winds of magic dice gave you 7 dice, you can still use up to 6 dic...

As usual, they'll revise half (or less) of the army books and then decide it's time for 9th edition.

But I'm not bitter.

Since 8th edition, beastmaster scourges no longer count as hand weapons and so do not provide +1 attack for "additional hand weapon" Instead they innately grant +1 attack which is great for mounted heroes. So, as both above said: each beastmaster makes 3 attacks (2 base +1 for the whip) al...

1) I've pointed this out in multiple threads: GW follows the "we'll assign rules then decide what to call it" mentality with their weapons. The rules for each weapon is self-contained in the description for that weapon. Completely ignore that both include "crossbow" in their labe...

As with everyone else, but perhaps more so, VC must adjust their strategy and tactics to the new edition. We have a local player who now refuses to play VC because his 7th edition strategy of 15 power dice (or some obnoxious number) throwing single dice at raising dead and dance macabre until he suc...

I believe in the case of the Manticore (and other monstrous mounts), yes, the hits are randomized, but there is a 2/3 chance of hitting the Manticore rather than the more heavily armored character.

If you're dead set on using one, remember:

I'll throw in my vote to remove all army book items duplicated in the common list and also those which are rarely, if ever, because of the effect/cost ratio. Many of the cost adjustments between 6th and 7th ed. were made, in my opinion, to remove certain combinations which, to be honest, weren't tha...

In all honesty, I'd like GW to cycle through their army books/codecies before deciding to scrap the entire thing and start over. For example: 7th edition release was fall 2007, I believe. Two army books per year mid 2010 - yeah: around 6 armies out of how many before 8th came out? 4th ed. of 40k was...

If I can ever find time to play, one of two things will happen:

Almost every roll will be IF until I kill my casters

or

I'll never roll a miscast again.

(Had way more miscasts than IF in 7th ed and earlier).

Very nice job with the work, very realistic.

The "drab" and "dark" comments likely result from the lack of contrast within your color scheme since almost everything are shades of gray and olive.

Granted, since in 8th edition the wound tables allow a 6 to wound regardless of strength versus toughness, the value of the bolt thrower, in general, has decreased. That, more than the changes to wounding the RBTs, has altered people's perceptions to their worth. At first glance, who wouldn't look a...

... Apparently, a "veteran" gamer in the group, in the early days of 8th edition, had inadvertently "taught" them a number of mistakes (mostly throwbacks to 7th edition that he was confusing with 8th edition) and all the new players just assumed he was 100% correct. This also ha...

If you think something is too good, it just may be, or it may not. I second the motion to ask to look at the entry in the army book. I've met more than a few people who have misread rules unintentionally and a few others who I'm fairly certain actually took advantage of my ignorance early on.

In 7th edition they supplied good counter-battery fire. When I used two or three I could severely injure or destroy one of my opponent's artillery pieces every round with concentrated fire. Just keep them away from shooting. This is not all that more difficult than it sounds unless you are playing against a gunline.
