They help alot with redirecting and other more advanced stuff.
Witout them you will lack a substantial amount of tactical ability however obviously you can play without them and be competitive... It really depends on your playing style with the druchii.
I rarely leave my house without them.

that was the dilemma we had in the game too.. Ofcourse I wanted to support my shade unit against those ogers but I saw my opponents point of view too.
