Last time I used BG I put a sorceress in with them and got PoD off to make them Str 5, significantly more slice for your dice.

Snakes have to be contenders - poison and deadly fast. Cobra, Death Adder, Asp, Taipan, Mamba etc

Recently I put my level 4 with a 4+ ward in with 5 Warlocks, with another 5 nearby exactly as Khaleth suggests. She didn't need to swap, but the unit was hardy and a great mobile platform for spell casting. Being Fast Cav they danced out of charge arcs easily but kept within spell range.
