I like to run mine with shields in 10 strong units by my reapers. That way they can better deal with light chaff going after the reapers, plus the shields make them a little more resistant to return fire.

If you want some more shooting why not give your corsairs handbows instead? There the same points and can put out a lot of shots if you run them 7x2, I know there only short ranged and not AP but can easily sweep away chaff. And I'd rather have 28 s3 shots a turn than an extra 7 attacks in cc.
