I tried and didn't like the result of brush on matte varnish.
I have been using Vallejo varnishes with airbrush and getting satisfying results so far. First gloss (a bit of thinning down is required) and then matte.

So its been awhile, I am awfully slow painter..but I finally completed 10 corsairs. I kept the blue, I am not sure if it could be better with brown color I used on my warriors. Also could I ask for a few tips on warlocks, especially horses? I think I will be doing warlocks next and I have no idea how to paint horses

I wouldn't worry too much about it, they look very nice as is I think.
Although you could just flick slightly on the armor if you want to, but thats as far I'd go with it.
(they are so good at hacking, they can control the flow and not mess their sweet armor )

Well, I dipped one, so once it's dry we'll see how it turned out. Made a mistake though. Didn't think about the fact that the super glue keeping it on the base was over 10 years old so when I swung the model to remove the excess... FWOOSH! Right of the base into a bush. So I had to take a toothpick...
